“DH Day Farm,” Acrylic on Canvas, 2020, 16 x 20 in, $395. Painted en plein air at the foot of Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, where lies the beautifully maintained DH Day Farm. An early promoter of Northern Michigan and the Grand Haven town on Sleeping Bear beaches, DH Day’s legacy lives on in farm buildings with softly rounded silos and towers.

Jennifer Tobias ABOUT: Jennifer Tobias, Representational Colorist: “I work in acrylic and oil paint, along with oil pastels. Most of my work is representational; I either start with an actual image or dream up one, but the exact reproduction of the image is never my goal. I explore the emotional tone of the image through saturated color and stylized form. Abstract works start with free forms and movement. I do not limit abstraction to pure form, but rather enjoy discovering the unconscious representations that derive from laying down the paint.” Jennifer works both in Michigan (Ten Blossom Studio, Old Mission Peninsula) and Chicago (Greenleaf Art Studios.) Her background is in languages, law, and interior design, along with the experience of creating and owning home decor stores throughout Michigan. Artwork reflects places in Jennifer’s life and travels, from her native South Dakota to Michigan, Chicago, and Southern France. A strong affinity for nature, light, color, and humor play out in her paintings. THIS YEAR: This year has led me further into painting from photographs and memory. I have learned to enjoy painting with others via Zoom, and count on my online art courses and podcasts to keep me sane through the pandemic! CONTACT: Website, jtobias3902@gmail.com, (231) 838-9181.

“Virtual Travel: L’Horizon at Palm Springs,” Acrylic on Paper, 2020, 11” x 11”, framed in white. $295. While cooped up with the Covid pandemic, I challenged myself to travel virtually, here to a sunny poolside in Palm Springs, California. This abstracted work points the viewer to the beckoning pool, iconic palm trees, and gorgeous, sunny skies of Southern California desert.
