“Across West Grand Traverse,” Oil on canvas, 2015, 36 x 36 in, $1050.

Mary E. Andersen ABOUT: A native of Traverse City, I grew up surrounded by orchards, vineyards, the lakeshore, sand dunes, and woodlands that greatly shaped the growth of my artistic vision to capture the beauty of God’s creation with pen, ink, and oils. Years of employment that included graphic design, bakery work, and horticulture/landscaping, ultimately led me to devote full-time to my studio and oil painting. Recently, I have experienced the joy of teaching oil painting and sharing my knowledge and experience with many wonderful students. I think of myself as a student, still learning to communicate what I am seeing and to teach others to “see beyond the literal.” THIS YEAR: Favorite thing I learned this year... although 2020 was a very difficult year, the spark of my vision, although dim, never went out. It ’s still there, ready to be rekindled at any time... I cannot stop seeing the beauty and wanting to continue the joy in the journey! GALLERIES: Blue Heron Gallery, Elk Rapids, MI; Lake Effect Gallery, Holland, MI; Bella Galleria, Traverse City, MI CONTACT: Website, Facebook, (616) 235-7931. 418 Grand Avenue NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503. Studio visits available by appointment.

“Sand Bar, East Grand Traverse Bay,” Oil on canvas, 2015, 20 x 20 in, $2800. I have found the constantly changing shoreline and fluctuation of the lake levels to be fascinating. “Sand Bar, East Grand Traverse Bay” was particularly interesting to me, because as a child, the entrance of Mitchell Creek to the bay was off-limits.
