“E Lakeview Hill Rd,” Gouache on paper, 2020, framed 22.5 x 22.5 in, $1500. These are both recent paintings that celebrate the seasons here in Northern Michigan. One features our farm’s vegetable gardens in October, and the other a snowy drive up on Leelanau Peninsula.

Justin Shull ABOUT: I find inspiration in the landscape. My paintings are as much about the world we make, as they are about the world that makes us. I am especially interested in the interaction between the built environment and its geography, trees, and plants, and in the quality of light and color unique to each location. Trees, buildings, telephone poles, plants, and geography are all cast members interacting on a stage in my paintings. The story they tell is the story of how we create our environment and how it shapes us. THIS YEAR: I recently started digital sketching after years of postponing, and I was surprised at how helpful this process has been as both a creative catalyst and in working through ideas. I’d recommend it to anyone who hasn’t tried it yet! GALLERIES: Somebody’s Gallery, Petoskey MI; Art in Res (artinres.com) CONTACT: justin.m.shull@gmail.com, Website.
