Ann Robinson ABOUT: Ann Robinson fell in love with watercolor painting in 1979 when she returned to college to study art, design, and illustration, and she has drawn and painted since. She studied art history and took additional watercolor classes as she completed her education in Commercial Design. By the time she finished college, her love of watercolor was deep. After college, she began a long career in commercial interior and architectural design. Her work included medical offices, a biomechanics laboratory, several restaurants, headquarters offices for an automotive supplier and a major insurer, and the winter offices for The Grand Hotel, where she worked with Carleton Varney, one of the great New York designers. Retirement from her design career created the opportunity for Ann to pursue her art full-time. She paints exclusively in watercolor because of its independent character, its ability to capture “mood,” and its demanding personality. Ann paints in her studio, surrounded by a nature preserve and plein air in most weather, except super cold (watercolors freeze)! In 2016, she won the first Mission Point Lighthouse Friends competition for the Lighthouse Pinot Grigio label and her art was selected as the feature poster for the Suttons Bay Art Festival. In 2018, she was honored to do the Twenty- five-year history mural for Bowers Harbor Vineyards. Recently, she was an award-winner in the 2020 Women in Watercolor International Juried Competition in the Abstract division. Ann has had numerous solo and group shows around northwest Michigan. She has painted many commissions, including murals, pet portraits, homes, and landscapes. Her work is in collections in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Virginia, and Florida. THIS YEAR: My favorite thing while creating this year was learning to play around more with color and form. “Farmstand Flowers,” Watercolor on paper, 2019, framed 21 x 27 in, $550. A simple handful of flowers picked from a farmstand on Old Mission Peninsula reflected the sunshine of the countryside that day. They were meant for our dining table, but I just had to put them in my studio. The next thing I knew, I was painting them.

“Seasonal Road,” Watercolor on paper, 2020, 28 x 22 in, $550. Driving to a friend’s farm, I was struck by the seasonal change this view presented. The road would later fill up with snow, but for now, there was a “foot in each season,” and the colors were still bright.
