“Moon Rise,” Oil on canvas, 2020, 20 x 10 in, $575. Memories of long Northern Michigan summer evenings on the lake inspired “Moon Rise”. Talking with family and friends after a barbeque, children splashing in the water, building a bonfire, and the sun setting with a blaze of color completed most days. However, on very special nights, the slow rise of the moon rewarded us for staying awake just a little later. These memories pull family and friends back each summer and sustain us during long winters.

Ruth Kitchen ABOUT: Ruth, an emerging artist, currently lives and paints in Traverse City, Michigan. Her primary medium is oil painting, but she also creates using gouache, watercolor, ink, and graphite. For Ruth, each painting offers a new opportunity to capture the beauty and spirit of the landscape. Her style continually evolves as she explores the many elements of art and painting. The joy and challenge of plein air painting was first experienced when Ruth painted with Andrew Petrov in Provence, France. En plein air summer workshops in Traverse City with Neil Walling, Margo Burian, Sharon Griffes Tarr, and Mark Hanson provided opportunities to study the Grand Traverse area in paint. Since 2003, Ruth has also studied with Charles Gruppe, Ellie Harold, Charles Murphy, Bob Rohm, Eric Slayton, and Lori Feldpausch in classes and workshops. Ruth’s paintings have been selected for juried shows, and she has received recognition in several shows. Ruth was a featured artist for the 2020 Paint Grand Traverse plein air event. In 2018, “Sunset Toast” was selected by the Friends of Old Mission Lighthouse to be featured on a Bowers Harbor Vineyards wine label. “Manitou Beacon” was a finalist for the 2017 Manitou Music Festival poster. “The Red Pump” was selected for the juried Art of Sleeping Bear Dunes book and show. Ruth is a member of the Oil Painters of America, Crooked Tree Art Center, Glen Arbor Arts Center, Leelanau Cultural Center, the Elizabeth Lane Oliver Center for the Arts, the Plein Air Painters of Northwest Michigan, Great Lakes Plein Air Painters Association, Studio One 6, and the Magic Thursday Artists . THIS YEAR: 2020 has been a very long year. Like most artists, I have been forced to isolate far more than I would have chosen. I have learned that I require the company of other artists. My artist community provides me new ideas and techniques, motivation, and inspiration. While helpful, our efforts to compensate for loss of face-to-face meetings were not always successful. GALLERIES: Sanctuary Handcrafted Goods, Traverse City, MI; Boone’s Long Lake Inn, Traverse City, MI; Studio visits available by appointment CONTACT: Website, ruthkitchen@att.net.

“Pretty in Pink,” Gouache, 2020, 8 x 8 in, $375. The bouquet of peonies was from my artist friend, Lori Feldpausch. I painted in her gardens one morning when the peonies were blooming. Lori has a variety of colors, and they bloom almost two weeks each June. Just before I left, she cut flowers and sent them home with me in a Ball jar. It was a treasure that I enjoyed for days. Of course, I neglected to leave the cut flowers outside for a bit so the ants could escape. Instead, these little hitchhikers showed up in my kitchen.
