King's Business - 1950-05

It was a child who informed a field marshal how he could be cleansed of his leprosy (2 Ki. 5:1-14). It was a child whom the Lord Jesus placed in the midst of the disciples when He gave His exhortation on hu mility (Mark 9:33-37). It was children whom the Lord called to Him, saying, “ Of such is the king dom of God” (Luke 18:15-17). It was a child who brought the five barley loaves and two small fishes which the Lord used to feed the hungry multi tude (John 6:1-14). It was a child to whom his mother and grandmother taught the Holy Scriptures which made him “ wise unto salvation through faith . . . in Christ Jesus” (2 Tim. 1:5; 3:14, 15). Never despise, slight, or underesti mate a child. —Now There’s always one good thing about telling the exact truth: you haven’t got to worry your brains to remember what you said. I do not know anything America needs more today than men and women on fire with the fire of heaven: not great men, but true, honest persons God can use. — D. L. Moody Imagining Trouble The marginal reading of Isaiah 26:3 is: “ Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose imagination is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” We are always imagining that things will go wrong—that the Lord will fo r sake us, that we shall be left in the lurch, and that we shall finally die of cancer in the poorhouse. Why not be persuaded that He will not forsake us, that we shall not miss the boat, that we never shall get tuberculosis or see the poorhouse. The Word of the Lord and the presence of the Lord assure us of His loving care, When He said, “ Let not your heart be troubled,” He referred to present dis tresses. When He added, “ neither let it be afraid,” He referred to future possi bilities. Let us quit being pessimists and become God’s optimists. — Dr. Walter L. Wilson For The Best Four Years To be at home in all lands and all ages; to count nature a familiar ac quaintance and art an intimate friend; to carry the key to the world’s library in your pocket, and feel its resources behind you in whatever task you under take; to make friends among men of your age who are to be leaders in all walks of life; to lose oneself in gener ous enthusiasm and co-operate with oth ers for common ends; to learn manners from students who are gentlemen and form character under professors who are Christians—these are the returns of a college for the best four years of one’s life. —President Hyde, Bowdoin College Our spiritual life will be as dependent on God as our physical resurrection. We can do nothing ourselves to sustain or maintain either, but look to God in faith. It Was a Child It was a child who secured the best possible nurse for the baby Moses (Ex. 2 : 1 - 10 ). The truth is not an abstract prin ciple; the truth is a Person— “I am the . . . truth.”

The Sunday School The Sunday school is a mighty in fluence in the life of our youth. It is the keystone of character. It is the first line of our nation’s defense. It is the finest preparation for happiness. It is the passport to good citizenship. It is the foundation of our democracy. “ As the twig is bent, The tree’s inclined.” Every child is entitled to know God. Every parent owes his child a knowledge of God. It has been shown that the great part of the impressions which remain with us through life are gained in child hood. It has been shown that God-fear ing children do not commit crimes. We must urge our children to regularly at tend the Sunday schools. We must give them a strong foundation of religious training. We say to the youth of Amer ica: You make the most of the Bible and the Bible will make the best of you. —Columnist Harry W. Schlacht The greatest failure of a preacher is to not preach the eternal gospel by the power of the Holy Spirit. — H. W. Virgin Euthusiasm is the greatest asset in the world. It beats money and power and influence. Single-handed, the enthu siast convinces and dominates where wealth accumulated by a small army of workers would scarcely raise a tremor of interest. Enthusiasm tramples over prejudice and opposition, spurns inac tion, storms the citadel for its object, like an avalanche overwhelms and en gulfs all obstacles. It is nothing more or less than faith in action. —Henry Chester Gather Them In Open the door for the children, ten derly gather them in— in from the high ways and hedges, in from the places of sin. Some are so young and so helpless, some are so hungry and cold; open the door for the children, gather them into the fold. Open the door for the children. See, they are coming in throngs! Bid them sit down to the banquet, teach them the gospel in songs. Pray for the Father to bless them— pray that grace may be given; open the door for the children —- theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. —Mary F. Kidder Jesus wrote no books, but wrote Him self in the heart of His followers.
