EXCUSES for not attending church

four

1. I wouldn’t go to church because I’d rather stay in bed late Sunday morning, then eat a leisurely break fast and read the Sunday paper. After all, I have to get up early six days a week, so it’s altogether unreasonable for the Lord to expect me to get up early on Sunday morning too. A man must get ahead in life, if he is busy enough about it, he won’t have time to worry about the life hereafter. Oh, yes, I like for my children to go to Sunday school because it makes things quieter around the house, and then too, it keeps a decently religious atmosphere about the place to have somebody in church. But actually, all children should go, and it’s good for the women too, provided there is nothing more important for them to do. 2. I wouldn’t go to church because I’d have to sit through a long dull sermon. If the preacher would only bring his sermon down to the level of the man who doesn’t study the Bible, it would be more interesting. He ought to remember that I don’t think a b o u t r e l i g i o u s things except in church and that I find it hard to shift pass the collection basket. It wouldn’t be so hard to go, if I didn’t have to give money. I like to go to a nice church building and one that is well built, and kept. I like to see the min ister look well, but I don’t see why I should give anything for it. When my children marry, I want to know that there is a nice church building and a preacher available. When any loved one passes away, I want to know that there are facilities in the community and a minister for a Christian service. I don’t see why though, I should take any responsibil ity for providing and maintaining these facilities. I wouldn’t live in a community without a church . . . but then I must want to use it if other people will build a nice new one, and maintain it, work in it, build it up. I’ll do them the favor of using it oc casionally when I need it. I never was a sponger or dead beat but al ways like to do my part of the work and pay my part of the cost. A man must have his golf, his fishing, his vacation, and a few other necessities. After these are taken care of, there just isn’t much left for the church. b r a n d n e w c r a d l e r o l l c o Written by Bernice T. He should know that I am not interested in concentrating on deep things, any way, as I get enough of that in the office during the week. If I do him the favor of going to church, he should consider me enough not to preach at me and should certainly not keep me past twelve o’clock. 3. I wouldn’t go to church because I’d see a lot of hypocrites there and I’d have to talk to some people I don’t care about. Of course, when I’m out with the fellows, I may pretend a lit tle myself . . . maybe I do leave the impression that I am making more money than I really do, or that I am a bigger man than I am . . . but that kind of hypocrisy is different. I may loaf on the job until the boss comes around and then get very busy, but that’s different too. I see all around me, every day, thousands of people pretending to have or to be things which they haven’t and aren’t, but I don’t notice hypocrites until I go to church. 4.
