E mpowered employees are a company’s greatest — often underutilized — weapon for ensuring long-term success. Put- ting decisionmaking power in the hands of the men and women who are on a company’s front line ensures that everyone, from the management offices to the shop floor, feels a sense of own- ership and responsibility.

Albéa Group Acquires New FA Presses

Albéa, a manufacturer of laminate tubes for cosmet- ics and oral care packaging, has further invested in Nilpeter technology with the acquisition of new FA presses for company sites in India, Brazil, and Poland. Most have already been installed, with installation on- going in Brazil. The collaboration between the two companies dates back to 2008 when Albéa, through its former UK di- vision, Betts Group, acquired two original FA-4 flexo presses for locations in India and Indonesia. Interested in adding new technology, the Albéa head office in France reached out to Nilpeter once again, and after a comprehensive vetting process with test- ing and trials, chose Nilpeter’s All New FA to be in- stalled in India, Poland, and Brazil. The new FA-presses will be put to use in the fields of laminate tubes for oral care packaging, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and other various personal care ap- plications. Albéa’s new FA-presses are prepared for the addition of digital printing stations, which will allow them to print variable data in the future. Nilpeter has devel- oped a zero waste/defects solution to reportedly en- sure Albéa meets market quality requirements.

Koenig & Bauer Duran Installs Folder Gluer At Ellis Paper Box Canadian packaging provider Ellis Paper Box, a member of the Ellis Group, has added a new Koenig & Bauer Duran Omega Allpro 90 folder gluer---the first in North America--- to its post-press department at its 60,000-square-foot Mississauga, Ontario, facility this spring. “We had already developed a great relationship with Koenig and Bauer through our purchase of their Iberi- ca brand of die cutters last year,”recalled Dave Ellis, the firm’s President. “When Koenig and Bauer purchased Duran and its Omega products, it seemed to be an ide- al situation for both parties. I believe Koenig & Bauer will continue to be a very important partner to the Ellis Group for many years.” Wide Range Of Offerings Ellis was attracted to the Omega Allpro because the folder gluers handle a wide range of substrates from cartonboard to corrugated, are said to be extremely versatile and capable of producing the most complex range of carton styles, which minimizes makeready and maximizes productivity and profitability. Allpro folder gluers produce straight line, double wall, crash lock and optional four- and six- corner with single finger servo fold for high speed precision as well as inner partition, Z-fold, conical crash lock and CD boxes at a maximum belt speed of 400 me- ters per minute. The entire three facilities that make up the Ellis Group organization are centered amid the Toronto, Ontario region. Ellis Packaging is headquartered in Pickering, along the shores of Lake Ontario, while Ellis Packaging West is in Guelph, approximately one hour west of the city. The Ellis Paper Box facility is a mod- ern two story glass building located in Mississauga, just minutes from the airport. Founded in 1946 in Ontario, Canada,The Ellis Group is comprised of more than 250 employees at Ellis Pack- aging, Ellis Paper Box and Ellis Packaging West servic- ing and specializing in the food, confectionary, phar- maceutical, neutraceutical and beverage industries. Global Food Packaging Market Continues To Grow In terms of revenue, the global food packaging market stood at $950.29 billion in 2018 and is antic- ipated to reach $1421.22 billion by 2027, expand- ing at a CAGR of 4.62 percent during the forecast period, according to a new report from Absolute Market Insights.

that acts as a bridge between the shop floor and en- gineering. The push is a part of the company’s ongo- ing Lean Manufacturing initiatives. The purpose of the E.P.E.T is to provide employees ownership and support of bottom up ideas for process improvements that pro- mote safety, production efficiencies and cultural change as it pertains to Lean manufacturing concepts. “The idea, in it’s simplest terms,” said company Pres- ident Kristen Shields,“is to get everyone involved. Ev- ery single person in the company is responsible for quality control; it’s not relegated to just one depart- ment. If someone sees a product on the floor they feel does meet our standards, they tag it immediately and send it back. Everyone has the power to do this. This helps achieve our goal of making certain that each item we manufacture for a customer leaves the plant in the best possible condition.” “The embracing of Lean manufacturing in the short term is a cultural mind set shift of accuracy vs. speed,” said Joe Lebron, Jr.Manager,Manufacturing Operations. “For far too long the emphasis was to ship product out the door and ‘do what needs to be done’ ,which result- ed in everyone bypassing and not documenting the proper corrections or needed process changes.” These shifts in attitude and procedure can help break down the walls that have existed between the shop and engineering for years, even decades, according to the company. History Of Leadership Graymills Corporation was founded in 1939 as a builder of machine tool pumps and five years later en- tered the parts washing business to increase the use of its pumps to meet the needs of the growing auto industry. It was in 1953 that the company began working with the nascent flexographic printing industry to create pumps, filters and accessories specifically for converters. In the 1960s, Graymills was asked by a leading ink company to make special pumps for the new gener- ation of liquid inks and was soon developing pumps that were not merely adapted to printing but were specifically manufactured with inks, coatings, and unique needs of the pressroom in mind. FTA Hall of Fame member Jerry Shields came on board with the company in 1970 as a Sales and Mar- keting Manager and a decade later, purchased the com- pany. Shields oversaw the construction of an assembly and metal fabricating addition to the company’s facil- ity and actively began to broaden Graymills’ interna- tional business efforts. In the 1990s, Graymills engineered the first peristal-

TLMI Releases Government, Regulatory Affairs Statements TLMI has released of the association’s first official Government and Regulatory Affairs (GRA) Position Statements. The statements are the first in a GRA series that the TLMI Board of Directors will approve and re- lease to membership and to the greater industry over the next year. These first Government and Regulatory Affairs Position Statements address tariffs and printed labeling. The TLMI Position on Tariffs outlines that it is imperative that the economic playing field is level across the globe for all manufacturers. The statement acknowledges that the implementation of broad-based tariffs has added to the cost and availability of prod- ucts and raw materials throughout the tag and label industry supply chain. The full Position Statement can be accessed at: www.tlmi.com/about/tlmi-posi- tion-statements/position-on-tariffs . The TLMI Position on Printed Labeling states that the association recognizes that not all Americans have ready access to necessary product information through smartphones or similar online technology. A recent ruling in a segment of the food industry only requires simple QR codes for the consumer to scan to ascertain additional product information. This rule not only reduces the amount of printed labeling re- quired on a product, it also minimizes information provided to consumers who many not have access to a smartphone or similar technology. The TLMI Posi- tion on Printed Labeling outlines that printed labeling should remain mandatory in all areas where consum- er or patient safety is at potential risk. The full Posi- tion Statement can be accessed at: www.tlmi.com/ about/tlmi-position-statements/position-on-en- suring-printed-labeling-options . “As the preeminent association in the North Ameri- can label and narrow web industry, TLMI has a respon- sibility to issue official positions on areas and dynam- ics that potentially have an impact on our members, and on the greater marketplace,” said Dan Muenzer, TLMI President. “These first Government and Regula- tory Affairs Position Statements are the result of hard work carried out by our partners at PACE in Washing- ton, D.C., and the entire TLMI Government and Reg- ulatory Affairs Committee. I want to especially thank committee co-chairs Alex Joesten of CCL and Cather- ine Heckman of Ashland for working so diligently with their team and the Board of Directors in getting these statements finalized and approved. These are the first in what will be a series of Government and Regulato- ry Affairs Position Statements as we continue to work on behalf of our members in the constantly-changing world of governmental regulations.”

But some asked for more: More dimensional integrity. More durability. More fluid changeovers. And we love a challenge. After all, if it weren’t for discriminating flexographers, we wouldn’t be in business. Because sleeves must be expanded to slip on and off the mandrel, when you expand a rigid, fiber/epoxy sleeve, deterioration starts from day one. It’ll work fine, as long as the slippage and vibration caused by eventual deterioration can be masked by your substrate. But film and foil are unforgiving. The newNickelBack TM sleeve fromARC is manufactured with an electroformed nickel alloy core that will not corrode, rust, or delaminate—at a cost comparable to fiberglass. It takes less air pressure to expand for mounting, and always snaps back to size, no matter howmany changeovers you do. And ARC NickelBack sleeves are engineered to be resurfaced many, many times.

industry. She has hosted high school career days at Graymills and has spent considerable time and energy in finding ways to advocate for the industry that has fueled her life’s work. “We have great products and a strong reputation,”she said. “As we celebrate our 80th anniversary it is very important to understand that our observance of the past should be used to gain ideas of how to move into the future.” Innovation One clear path to the future is through innovation. With three main markets — metalworking pumps, ink pumps, and parts washers — the company is not only diversified but is frequently able to translate techno- logical developments in one market and introduce them into the other. “This year we are celebrating our 80th anniversary with the tagline ‘After 80 years, we’ve got innovation down to a science,’” said Shields. Graymills will introduce its Smarter Ink Pump Family at the upcoming Labelexpo Europe show in Brussels, Belgium, September 24-27. The company will be ex- hibiting in booth9A59. Graymills moved several years ago to a new, modernized facility that allows the company to meet growing market demands.

FTA Details Fall Conference Schedule

Flexo Market News

With 17 presentations detailing the start-to-finish creation of a high-quality, flexographically printed job, FTA Fall Conference 2019 is offering the opportunity to see the latest in operator training. The event will take place October 28-30 at the Sheraton Charlotte Hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina. The eight-session agenda is as follows: • Defining the Race : Listen to a panel discussion led by the conference chair, where presenters mim- ic a pre-production meeting, dissect variables and ob- stacles encountered, discuss the design requirements, and identify the consumables and materials used. • Empowering the Pit Crew :Virtual reality (VR) will take a new role in press operator training. Learn how VR can provide cost-effective, zero-waste and scalable training, and then watch an instructor teach a new flex- ographer how to set up and run a virtual flexo press. • Optimizing the Tools for the Race :Learn the impor- tance of performing a print optimization to determine the prepress requirements, ink densities and press set- tings prior to fingerprinting. See what consumables were selected for the project, the attributes that led to their selection and how they performed on press. • Rounding the Curves : Hear an explanation of the two fingerprints and their differences, then watch a live demonstration of a fingerprint run on a VR press. Discover how the fingerprint data is used in prepress and where the curves are applied in the RIP. • Taking a Process Control Lap : Learn how utilizing a printer’s control target to print back to the values ob- tained during the fingerprint can enhance the quality of the characterization run. Explore how ICC profiles are used in prepress across all devices. And see a VR press perform the characterization run while printing back to values on the adjusted printer’s control target. • Finding and Training Tomorrow’s Workforce : Hear a summary of FTA’s year-long and industry-wide workforce study’s findings, and the actionable items derived from it. Then, educators from a pair of FTA member technical educational institutions will discuss how their programs attempt to address those findings. • Tuning-up the Process : FTA will take a look at sev- eral process improvement methodologies specific to flexography and put one to the test by taking a deep dive into that data and determining what could have done differently to add value to the process. • TheWinners’ Circle :The VR press is put into produc- tionmode and produces the final piece live. With samples in hand, FTA will examine the challenging print compo- nents—once considered too difficult for flexography— while discussing modern techniques used today.

ing, coating, extrusion, and bag/pouch manufacturing. This segment of the industry is estimated to be $24.8 billion for 2018 and does not include retail shopping bags, consumer storage bags, or trash bags. Flexible packaging represents approximately 19 percent of the total $170 billion U.S. packaging in- dustry and is the second largest packaging segment behind corrugated paper, and just ahead of bottles and miscellaneous rigid plastics packaging. Flexible packaging increased from 17 percent of the packag- ing marketplace in 2000 to the current level of 19 percent in 2018. Going Steady The industry has shown steady growth over the last 20 years with two exceptions, the downturn of 2001 due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the “Great Reces- sion” of 2009. For 2017-2018, FPA estimates a solid annual growth rate for total U.S. flexible packaging of 2.7 percent based on information provided by FPA members in the FPA State of the Industry Survey, by non-mem- bers in the FPA Industry-Wide Converters Survey, the Census Bureau’s latest Annual Survey of Manu- factures, and FPA’s long-term historical model of flex- ible packaging industry growth. This projection is in line with the long-term trend line of flexible packag- ing growth for 2003-2018 as the industry continues to improve from the low level experienced in 2009. The estimated growth rate of 2.7 percent is modest- ly lower than the projected gross domestic product (GDP) growth for the full year 2018, which the lat- est data indicates an overall U.S. economic growth of 2.9 percent. Vibrant Industry The U.S. flexible packaging industry employs close to 79,000 people in the United States and encompass- es a wide variety of manufacturing methods, materials, and resources. The average flexible packaging convert- er is a small to medium-size company with annual sales totaling approximately $76-$78 million. The top 100 flexible packaging companies (out of an estimated 408) account for almost 77 percent of the total industry revenue with an average size of about $245 million. deck, eliminating ‘pinch points’ where kinks form that slow the flow and weaken the tube.Dual roller technol- ogy combines just two rollers with a longer compres- sion cycle to provide greater flow with fewer rotations. This results, according to the company, in lower friction, reduced tube fatigue and less flow pulsation. Path To The Future Shields believes the path forward relies on the com- pany’s ability to hear the voices of its employees and customers alike. “We are a company that thrives on customization,” Shields said. “Everything here is hand made, all hand built. We sell a solution to a customer, not necessarily just a product. We encourage customers to run tests here at our facility to see ways we can use customiza- tion to meet their expectations and needs.” As for employees, Shields believes Graymill’s open atmosphere and attitude will guide even greater inno- vations in the future. “Everyone at Graymills is encouraged to challenge one another,” she said.“No one should be afraid to ask a question or challenge the way it’s been done in the past.We want to improve products, and take out costs without affecting quality. That requires buy-in from the entire workforce. We want to hear everyone’s voice.”

Graymills (Cont’d from Page 7) The Smarter Ink Pump Family is the company’s new- est innovation in peristaltic pumps. Smarter Pumps have a new physical appearance and smaller footprint than previous Graymills models and can be mounted vertically or horizontally and easily adjusted in the field. They feature Graymills’ quick-disconnect removable head technology, which allows the pump head/tube changes to be accomplished in seconds without tools. Four distinguishing features of the new pumps are a display that indicates rotational speed; a predictive hose failure monitor; one button reverse drain shut- down sequence with an adjustable timer; and remote analog control with available digital connectivity. All Graymills peristaltic or ‘tube’ pumps are engi- neered specifically for flexo and gravure printing ap- plications and can reportedly easily accommodate a wide variety of fluids from inks and coatings to adhe- sives including water-based, solvent and UV/EB. The steel pump housing, which protects the pump against splashing and damage, has a baked-on hybrid powder coating for a long-lasting durable finish.Three swivel lock fasteners quickly release the pump head cover, without tools or loose parts, facilitating a quick tube change. The Graymills head design allows the tube to run ‘straight-through’ from the bucket to the print
