THE JOYS OF BEING A TOURIST My Favorite Trip of All Time

What’s the first thought that comes to mind when you hear the word “tourist?”You might find tourists visiting your hometown or country to be annoying. For me, and thankfully for all the people I met while on my honeymoon in Ireland, meeting tourists is a welcome and exciting possibility. Since May 7 marks National Tourism Day, I figured it would be a good time to talk about the amazing trip my wife and I took for our honeymoon. It turned out to be my favorite vacation of all time. I should start by clarifying something very important — something for which my patients jokingly scold me all the time. My wife’s name is Amanda. She is a part-time physical therapy assistant, and she works here in the office. There have been a handful of instances in which I have talked to patients about her without helping them to make the connection that she is the Amanda they’ve met during previous visits to the office. “Looking back, Amanda and I both agree that our entire trip was so astounding because of the kindness and helpfulness of the local population who encouraged us toward great scenery and cuisine.” So, Amanda, who works here at Gilbert PT, and I got married in October of 2014, and the day after the wedding, we caught a red-eye out of Baltimore to Dublin, Ireland, to kick off our 12-day adventure. Before we left,

we found this amazing bed-and-breakfast package that allowed us to stay at different participating locations all around the country through vouchers. They gave us a 200-page book filled with information about these B&B establishments, and we would flip through the photos, pick a location that looked fun, call the owners the night before, and show up with our vouchers in hand. Luckily for us, we visited during the slower season, so whenever a proprietor heard we were celebrating our honeymoon, they would move us into their best suite! We figured the only place we could stay that would top all the honeymoon suites was a castle, so …we booked a room at Clontarf Castle! One of the funniest parts of the trip actually occurred when we arrived there. Since I was in PT school leading up to this trip, Amanda took on the majority of the planning, which meant that a lot of the reservations were in her maiden name, which is Nagle. When we walked into the castle, there was a lovely sign set out front to welcome “Mr. and Mrs. Nagle.” Amanda, who was delighted at this funny mix- up, took pictures of it and still gives me a hard time about it. We rented a car to go from city to city, and while it was pretty scary driving on the wrong side of the road, it allowed us to see the varied and breathtaking scenery. In Ireland, Amanda’s wish was to see the famous Cliffs of Moher rising from the Atlantic Ocean at Hag’s Head that have been famously featured in “Wuthering Heights,”“The Princess Bride,” and “Harry Potter

and the Half-Blood Prince.” It was so beautiful that it ended up being our favorite sight throughout the whole trip. We also went to several mom and pop restaurants recommended to us by locals, all of whom treated us like we belonged and answered every question we asked. They also recommended that we avoid going to the more popular Jameson Distillery and check out the Bushmill one instead, a decision that led to another great experience I will always remember. Looking back, Amanda and I both agree that our entire trip was so astounding because of the kindness and helpfulness of the locals, who encouraged us toward great scenery and cuisine. To that end, I’d like to take National Tourism Day to thank all those who helped make that trip everything it could be all those years ago.

‘Hey, Alexa!’

3 WAYS A VIRTUAL ASSISTANT CAN HELP GET YOUR KIDS READY FOR SCHOOL

Reminders and Lists Alexa can also help you check off items from your family’s morning to-do lists to minimize the chaos of weekday mornings. You can create reminders to pack lunches or grab homework, and then all you have to do is ask, “Alexa, what are my reminders?” She will run down the list, so you can hit the road early without the nagging feeling that you left something behind. Make It a Game “Out the Door” is an interactive Alexa game that turns getting ready for school into an adventure for younger children. Each day, kids are given a new superpower and have to defeat a different creature as they complete “missions,” which include tasks like brushing their teeth and getting dressed. It makes the process of getting ready for school exciting and gives kids an incentive to fulfill their responsibilities. If you don’t already have an Echo Dot, you can find them at most major retail stores. Make your mornings less stressful by starting with “Hey, Alexa” and going from there.

Even though parents and kids everywhere are getting close to celebrating the last day of school this year, school day mornings are difficult no matter what season it is. Do you feel like you’ve run a marathon by 9 a.m. every day? Rest assured that you’re not alone. Mornings are often the most hectic and stressful part of a parent’s daily schedule. Fortunately, there is an inexpensive and popular device that can help take some of the pressure off your morning routine and get your kids to the bus on time: Amazon’s virtual assistant, Alexa! Alarms of All Kinds You can place an Echo Dot in your kid’s room and set an alarm that wakes them up to the weather report, a standard alarm sound, or their favorite tunes. You can also program Alexa to turn on a compatible bedside lamp so they wake up to light instead of sound, which offers a more calming way to wake up. If your kid decides to catch a few more z’s and ignore their alarm, you can use some of Alexa’s other features, like Drop In and Intercom, to start a two-way conversation or send announcements to all the kids’ rooms in the house.

Patient Testimonial

“After attending a workshop at Gilbert Physical Therapy, I found out that physical therapy could help my left shoulder without having surgery. Jonathan, Patrick, and Erin worked with me very closely and always asked me at the start of each session if there were

“I was diagnosed with a full rotator cuff tear in my left shoulder and was considering surgery, not sure of the outcome. I also had pain and some difficulty with

any changes. They always listened to my comments and provided new ways to help any problems. I was always impressed with the one-on-one attention shown to each patient. Since my therapy, I continue to do the exercises given to me each day, and I am pain-free and have almost full range of motion with my left shoulder. I would highly recommend Gilbert for PT treatment. If I have any more problems in the future, I will be back! Thank you for caring.” –Barbara C.

full range of motion. After learning of the rotator cuff workshop at Gilbert Physical Therapy, I decided to see what outcome I could reach. Erin, Jonathan, and Pat guided me through my physical therapy to increase my mobility and strength in my shoulder and were very attentive in my therapy workout. As a result, I have increased my mobility and strength, and with continued exercise, I am able to do daily activities with less difficulty. “ –Ronald P.

NATIONAL PHYSICAL FITNESS AND SPORTS MONTH! Are You Ready to Move This Month?

You may have noticed #MoveInMay trending on various social media platforms this month. If you came across a post featuring this hashtag, you may have initially thought your friends on Facebook were randomly encouraging you to pack your bags and move to a new house, city, or state. Fortunately, this isn’t the case at all! #MoveInMay is a trend stemming from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition and their decision to dub May “National Physical Fitness and Sports Month.” Participating in this observance is easy; you just have to set aside some time to focus on being active and healthier. If you aren’t sure how to start, our team here at Gilbert Physical Therapy wants to offer some ideas. 1. Stay Hydrated For the average adult, eight glasses of water a day are typically recommended. But the vast majority of people have a hard time reaching this goal. Rather than filling up their water bottle, they’ll often reach for another cup of coffee, an energy drink, or a soda instead. To get yourself through those eight glasses, you can set a reminder on your cellphone, make sure you finish a glass before you take restroom breaks at work, or purchase a marked water bottle to help keep you on track. 2. Set Goals and Keep Track of Them While goals will change depending on your individual fitness level, make sure you’re coming up with clear expectations for yourself. Write them down to keep track. Once you’re able to achieve your goals easily, start increasing them.

3. Try Something New There has to be some kind of activity you’ve always wanted to try. If you’ve been even remotely curious about trying indoor rock climbing, aerial yoga, group Pilates, or joining a local walking club, you can use #MoveInMay as an excuse to give it a whirl. 4. Use Food for Fuel For extended bouts of exercise, you’ll need to fuel yourself for both performance and for recovery. Eating for fuel is about keeping your mind sharp and knowing which types of foods will help you most. For example, if you’re experiencing muscle cramps, you can start adding bananas, avocados, and leafy greens to your diet to make up for lost potassium and calcium. If you have any further questions about fitness activities or nutritional recipes you should try this month, don’t hesitate to let us know! We’re happy to help you participate in #MoveInMay!
