WHAT NOT TO EAT OR DRINK WHILE WEARING INVISALIGN
Halloween, with trick-or-treating in all of its sweet, tasty, cavity-filled splendor, is nearly upon us. Even if you’re not going trick-or-treating, every store’s shelves are stocked to the brim with Halloween candy just begging to be munched on. However, if you have Invisalign braces, there are types of candy, and other foods and drinks for that matter, that you should avoid year-round. While Invisalign braces might enable you to take them in and out while you eat, you still don’t have free reign to gobble down all your favorite foods if you take out your trays first. Invisalign slowly pushes your teeth to where they need to be, and foods requiring a lot of force to bite into can ruin the progress the Invisalign trays have made. Some culprits include breads with hard crusts, hard nuts, and hard candies (especially jawbreakers). Even when you’re eating “harder” vegetables, it’s a good idea to cut them into smaller pieces. Foods that are overly sticky are also a no-go. Sticky foods like caramel, gum, jelly beans, Starburst candy, and others can leave residue
on your teeth, which can lead to plaque buildup after you put your Invisalign trays back on. So, for the overall health of your teeth, it’s best to avoid those completely. For similar reasons, you should also cut way back on drinking soda. Not only is it full of sticky sugar, but its acidity can eat away at your enamel.
You should also avoid drinks like coffee, tea, and wine, which can all stain your aligners, leaving your teeth looking dirty and dull. At the same time, hot drinks can warp the shape of your aligners, potentially extending the amount of time you have to wear them.
