The Last Hurrah SAYING GOODBYE TO SUMMER AND HELLO TO FALL

Every August, my family and I vacation down to Myrtle Beach for a week. My family has been visiting the beach every year for as long as I can remember, and it’s one of the things we look forward to the most each summer. At Myrtle Beach, we make the most of all the fun things to do in the area. The majority of our time is spent in the water as we like to ride jet skis, play in the sand, and bodysurf. We also go golfing and drive go-karts. Each year, we try to go on an excursion and experience something new in the area. Last year, we visited Disney World, which was a blast, especially for the kids. If you ever find yourself in the Myrtle Beach area, I recommend walking around Broadway at the Beach, a huge outdoor entertainment center. You can eat at delicious restaurants, shop in unique boutiques, and see live shows. Another great attraction is the Family Kingdom Amusement Park. This park is located on the beach, and it features a water park with various rides, slides, games, and a beautiful Ferris wheel. Myrtle Beach State Park is another neat area. The park includes a few miles of forest, as well as beach, and it features interactive natural history displays, saltwater aquariums, and live reptiles. If you have the time, park naturalists also offer nature education programs about the coast and wildlife.

If you’ve spent too much time on the beach — if that’s even possible — and you want to learn more about the wildlife at Myrtle Beach from the comfort of a controlled environment, you can visit Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach. This aquarium offers many cool experiences like swimming with stingrays, diving with sharks, viewing marine animals in a glass-bottom boat, or sleeping with the sharks. Though most of these experiences take place during regular aquarium hours, you can sign up for an overnight adventure to learn more about sharks and sleep in the Dangerous Reef Tunnel! Although we are so excited for our last vacation of the summer, fall is right around the corner. We have some exciting changes happening in the clinic that coincide with the changing of the seasons. Recently, Colleen assumed the office manager position at Somerset Family Physical Therapy. We were so happy to offer Colleen the position; she deserves it! Also, I would like to welcome Mackenzie, our new receptionist, to the clinic. Don’t be afraid to say hi and introduce yourself the next time you are in. She is a great asset to our team! As a reminder, our new sports injury prevention program for fall sports will begin in September. Stay tuned for more details on this great program!

3 Studying Hacks for Successful Students

Are your kids already sweating exams this semester? Fear not! Combine these tips with a regular studying routine, and they’ll be set for anything their teachers assign this year. Chew On This. Not all classrooms allow gum, but those that do offer students a distinct advantage. According to Scientific American, chewing gum increases the flow of oxygen to the areas of your brain responsible for attention and memory. Your student can even coordinate gum flavors with each of their classes. Do they

time to read their essay aloud! Tom Stafford, a psychologist who studies typos at the University of Sheffield, notes that when we reread our work, “we don’t catch every detail; we’re not like computers or NSA databases.” Your student doesn’t catch their typos because they don’t expect them! By reading their work aloud, your student can fix those typos as they come up. But why put in all the effort when they can let Google do it for them? They can simply copy and paste the essay into Google Translate and let it read the essay aloud. Hearing their work ring out in Google’s monotone speech will help them highlight and fix those mistakes. Get Off Facebook. Is your child wasting all of their precious studying hours on social media? According to Common Sense Media’s 2015 national census survey, tweens and teens spend an average of six to nine hours on some form of media daily. Help your student learn to self-regulate with StayFocusd, a web

have a biology test coming up? Encourage your student to chew peppermint gum while they study and while they take the test. Their brain will associate the minty flavor with those plant cell organelles they studied for an hour the night before.

“When I first arrived at SFPT, my badly fractured right elbow had just had a metal plate and five screws put in. My hand and arm were virtually useless. I couldn’t brush my teeth, comb my hair, eat, or write. And I couldn’t play mahjong with my right hand! After several weeks of therapy under Kevin’s expert guidance, plus devotion to my at-home exercise, my elbow and arm are almost completely back to normal. I would highly recommend SFPT for the friendliness and expertise of its entire staff!”

Physical Therapy for Injury Prevention OUR TEAM WILL KEEP YOU HEALTHY AND ON YOUR FEET

Contrary to popular belief, physical therapy excels in both treating and preventing sports injuries. While we commonly think about injury prevention in relation to elite athletes, the practice is equally important to recreational athletes. The body is interconnected, meaning that weakness or dysfunction in one region can create problems in other parts of the body. No athlete, elite or recreational, is immune to an occasional bout of weakness or dysfunction, and physical therapy can correct said ailments and prevent future injury. Individuals can help prevent injury, in many ways, on their own. One of the easiest places to begin injury prevention is on the training schedule. For example, when progressing running duration or distance, it is important to increase only by 10 percent per week while allowing yourself rest days.

physical therapist. After evaluating your health, your physical therapist will discuss the areas of your body that are weak or out of balance. From there, you will work with your physical therapist to reduce strain on the body through various exercises and stretches. Patient education during physical therapy is a large factor in both preventing and treating sports injuries. Athletes are typically highly motivated individuals, and through education, athletes are empowered to take control of their own injury prevention techniques. By understanding an injury and the ways in which you can prevent it, the time it takes to heal, and what appropriate training activities and techniques you should undergo, athletes are better equipped to prevent injury. If you are interested in physical therapy for injury prevention, give us a call at 732-356-5363 . Our trained staff will keep you on your feet and injury-free.

of the summer will take place in the United States: a total solar eclipse! This eclipse will be visible

across North America, but the path of totality — the area where the moon completely covers the sun — will only fall in the continental U.S., leading this cosmic event to be called the Great American Eclipse. If you’re already in the United States, a day’s road trip is all you need to grab a front row seat for this rare astronomical occurrence.
