NOVEMBER 11, 1923 RE-STATEMENT OF THE ABRAHAMIC COVENANT Genesis, Chapters 15-17 Golden Text: “And when Abraham was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.” (Gen. 17:1, 2.) Outline: We are to briefly consider three chapters in our lesson. The teacher should bear in mind that we are seeking to have the scholars READ the Bible, and every effort should be made along this line. We want them to get the facts before them thus intensifying their inter- EXPOSITION est in God’s Word. This means, also, that T. C. Horton the teacher must read all the chapters carefully and prayerfully. The scholars will have twelve weeks in which to familiarize themselves with the Third Period of the Outline of Old Testament History which is being studied in connection with these lessons. The facts contained in these three chapters (15-17) can be considered under the following heads: Chapter 15: (1) The Revelation of the Word of the Lord, vs. 1-4. (2) The Reliance upon the Word, vs. 5, 6. (3) The Ratification of the Promise, vs. 7-17. (4) The Renewal of the Covenant, vs. 18-21. Chapter 16: (1) The Ruthless Act of Sarah toward Hagar, vs. 1-6. (2) The Revelation of God to Hagar, vs. 7-14. (As “El Shaddai” the Strength-giver.) (3) The Record of Ishmael’s Birth, vs. 15, 16. Chapter 17: (1) The Revelation of God as the Almighty One, vs. 1-3. (2) The Re-affirmation of the Covenant (Affirmed as Everlasting), vs. 4-8. (1) THE REVELATION OP THE WORD, “The Word of the Lord came unto him, saying” 15:4. The word, or message, came from the Lord to Abram. He had wrought a great victory in delivering Lot and had antagonized the kings who were defeated. He is in a strange land and he is thinking of his helpless condition if there should be a conspiracy against him. God knows our frame. He knows when we need His help. He came to Abram. The designation “the Word of the Lord” is personal and suggests the pre-incarnate Son of God—a Divine manifesta tion which was made several times to Abram. Look at the picture of Abram, sitting in the door of his (1) The Revelation of the Word. (2) The Reliance upon the Word. (3) The Ratification of the Promise. Introduction:
tent, meditating; separated from Lot; fighting for Lot’s deliverance; thinking of his success; his danger. Like Da vid in the cave of Adullam, or Elijah on Mount Carmel, he is lonely and needs comfort. God comes to give the needed comfort and says “Fear not; I am thy shield.” How many times God has used those words! He spoke them to Isaac, Moses, Joshua, Da vid, Paul; and has He not spoken them often to us, “Fear thou not for I am with thee?” God does not wait to be called upon. He sees; He hears; He feels; He knows. The wings of Abram’s faith are flut tering. He is not able to lift them above his circumstances. God accommodates Himself to his weak faith and assures him, “I am thy shield; I will stand between you and your enemies.” (Psa. 18:2) “The Lord is my rock and my fortress, and my deliverer) my God, my strength, in whom 1 will trust; my buckler and the horn of my salvation and my high tower.” (Psa. 3:3; 84:11). God shielded Job, He shielded Israel, He shields His saints. He shields them from the charge of the law (Rom. 8:33)
