Another week has come and gone on our Primary Campus. Finally, we got to celebrate our whole school athletics day on Wednesday and after a number of false starts due to weather, we were able to celebrate as a whole school. A massive thank you to the PE team who persevered to ensure students got the most out of the experience. Our students continued to show our school values of Teamwork, Respect, Learning and Leadership throughout the day and it was great to see so many kids with smiles on their faces and a willingness to have a go. It was also great seeing so many parents in attendance and watching the students compete in their events. A great sense of community pride was evident. Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Year 3/4 Hoop Time Basketball Gala Day at Mill Park Stadium. A group of about 40 Year 3 and 4 kids participated in the day long event against other schools. The improvement from our students over the day was evident, with a number of wins happening and a real sense of teamwork. Well done to all students who participated. Congratulations also to our students who represented our school at District Cross Country at Bundoora Park. Well done to Miah in Year 4 who has made it through the next stage. Parent/carer engagement is so important in today ’ s world with the events of the past few covid years. It has been wonderful to see so many parents/carers attend our Mother ’ s Day event and our Education Week celebrations last week. To see the smiles on both our students and parents/carers made it even more special. We will continue to have open mornings next term to get more parents/ carers into classrooms and engaging in student learning.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PRINCIPAL REPORT

School Leadership in conjunction with School Council are working hard to update facilities across both campuses. On the Primary Campus, there are a number of priorities that we are looking to improve across the remainder of 2023. These include updating and refurbishment of the student toilets, carpets, updating landscaping around the front of the school and carpark areas and the development of basketball courts at the front of the school. Staff and student voice have been instrumental in the development of these projects as we continue to work hard to give our students the best opportunity to succeed and be proud of their school. With the development of spaces around the car park may mean changes to the Kiss and Drop area moving into Term 3. Our priority is to keep our students as safe as possible when arriving and leaving school at the end of the day. Information around these changes will be sent home to families via Sentral across the next few weeks so please keep your eyes open for these changes. I remind parents/carers to be vigilant when driving students to school especially when entering the car park. Students can be unpredictable in nature, so please slow down and be patient with one another. I also ask that when walking students into school that you use the single gate on Gordons Road to enter and exit the school. We have far too many parents/carers and students walking through the car park to enter the school when cars are dropping off. The car park area is only for parents/carers who are dropping students off in cars not a thorough fare to people to walk through. Thank you for your support to keep all students safe. A quick reminder to parents/carers regarding correct school uniform. With the cold weather here to stay for the short term, a number of students on both campuses have begun to alter their school uniform and add multi colored shoes, leggings or long sleeved t - shirts under their school tops. Our uniform is one that reinforces school pride and sets the standard in the community. We try our best to support families and students during these cold times but it is important that students adhere to our school uniform policy. Any issues, please come and speak to the school.

Please remember we have several reminders/events happening on the Primary Campus across the next few weeks.

• Parent Helpers course will take place on Friday the 2nd and 9th of June in our Primary Campus Staffroom from 9:00 am - 10:30am. If parents are interested in attending these training days, notes need to be returned to the front office by today, 26 th May 2023. A massive thank you to Leah who continues to give up her time to provide the best opportunities for our students and parents.

• Year 5/6 Camp is happening next Wednesday 31 st May returning Friday 2 nd June.

• Breakfast Club continues to run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8.15am - 8.45am. This is a great way for students to fuel up before a big day of learning but to also spend a relaxing time with teachers. Families are reminded that students cannot be expected to be in the best mindset if they come to school without breakfast or healthy snacks like fresh fruit. This is important if they are to maximise their learning and academic potential.

Have a wonderful weekend.

HEALTH CARE NEEDS POLICY

http://www.thelakes.edu.au/uploads/8/3/9/0/83901006/health_care_needs_policy_2022.pdf

Students with complex medical care needs must have a Student Health Support Plan which provides for appropriate staff to undertake specific training to meet the student ’ s particular needs.

In order to provide appropriate support to students who may need medical care or assistance, a Student Health Support Plan must be prepared in consultation with the student, their parents, carers and treating medical practitioners.

Student Health Support Plans will be reviewed:

Student Health Support plans help our school to assist students with:

when updated information is received from the student ’ s medical practitioner

routine health care support needs, such as supervision or provision of medication

when the school, student or parents and carers have concerns with the support being provided to the student

personal care support needs, such as assistance with personal hygiene, continence care, eating and drinking, transfers and positioning, and use of health - related equipment emergency care needs, such as predictable emergency first aid associated with asthma, seizure or diabetes management.

if there are changes to the support being provided to the student, or on an annual basis.

Confidential medical information provided to The Lakes South Morang College to support a student will be:

recorded on the student ’ s file

Policies are available to all families via the Sentral Portal (under Resources) or via our website http://www.thelakes.edu.au/policies -- reports.html

shared with all relevant staff so that they are able to properly support students diagnosed with medical conditions and respond appropriately if necessary.

SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT

Hello all,

A very belated welcome to Term 2. I hope you all had a lovely break during the April school holidays.

At School Council ’ s most recent meeting on May 16, we:

• Heard from our student reps and the request for a waterproof jacket as part of school uniform. We will discuss this in depth more at our next Council meeting;

Raised covering the bike/scooter area on Primary;

• Had a very robust and lengthy discussion regarding the need for a fundraising committee and potential easy fundraising projects that can be implemented straight away, together with a need for holding social family events;

• Discussed what the iPad program for Prep – Year 2s would look like going forward from 2024;

• Had a status update on needing security cameras on both campuses; and

• Discussed student safety in the ’ kiss and drop ’ zone on the Primary campus carpark in both the mornings and afternoons;

A big ‘ hot topic ’ this month has been increasing parent engagement, both through social family events/fundraising, and in the classrooms. Whilst it has always been something in the back of our minds for the past 15 months, the message came out loud and clear in the 2022 School Review that this needed to be an area of focus. Therefore, this month we have felt that it is now the right time to re - establish a positive parent/carer and family engagement culture; find out more from parents/carers as to what they want and need when it comes to school engagement; and most importantly, what actions can we implement now. It has been kickstarted with holding a Prep Parent/Carer/Principal Q&A session at the end of last term and last Thursday ’ s Open Day for Education Week, but to progress further we need to hear from you, so we are in the process of developing a survey to hear your thoughts and feedback on ideas on how you want to be better engaged with the school. Enjoy the rest of Term 2 and as always, if you have any issues, ideas, questions that you would like raised at our next Council meeting, or any other support, we are more than happy to hear from families so please feel free to send me an email to amanda.farrelly@education.vic.gov.au. Council meets twice per term on a Tuesday at 5:30pm and visitors and observers are always welcome!

Cheers,

Amanda Farrelly School Council President

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR MODEL ON PRIMARY

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR

The Lakes South Morang College - Primary implements the Positive Behaviour Framework. The Positive Behaviour Framework is an evidence - based approach to managing student behaviour and to support issues at the local community level. The framework is evaluated regularly, and practices are adjusted to make sure the process is achieving effective results for schools. The purpose of implementing Positive Behaviour at The Lakes South Morang College - Primary is to:

Embed common language and behavioural expectations for the whole school community.

Provide a safe and orderly environment to enhance learning.

Use evidence - based decision - making using data.

Provide a common teaching base in the form of a behavioural matrix.

Embed a culture of positive behaviour through explicit teaching (as opposed to punishment)

To support the framework staff and students on the primary campus developed a Behaviour Response Flowchart and a Positive Behaviour Matrix.

CLASS DOJO

To help support this framework the school uses ‘ Class Dojo ’ as a positive acknowledgment system for students when they are displaying the desired behaviours. It is an online system where students are awarded a dojo when they display a positive behaviour which can be seen in the Positive Behaviour Matrix. Students can spend their dojos at our Primary Reward Shop or at their year level rewards shop.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR MODEL ON SECONDARY

Over the last few years the Secondary Campus has transitioned from a Middle - years Positive Behaviour Model to a Secondary Positive Behaviour Model. This transition began as the demographic of students on our campus became older, more mature and ultimately, able to take greater responsibility for their actions and learning. When working with adolescents, there is an understanding that as young people navigate growing up, maturing and gaining independence they will inevitably make mistakes along the way. The Secondary Positive Behavior Model works to recognise and celebrate students who are able to make great choices for themselves and their learning, and help those who have made mistakes along the way with the opportunity to reflect, repair, learn and grow. The Secondary Positive Behaviour Model was co - designed through an extensive process, incorporating the knowledge and expertise of educational consultants, school leaders from schools like The Lakes, the principal and wellbeing teams, parents/carers and most importantly, our students. Student feedback was extremely important to the models development. One of the key issues raised was that we, as a school, weren ’ t doing enough to celebrate the successes our students experience each and every day.

As a response to this, honouring the voices of our students, teachers regularly acknowledge the ongoing effort of students who consistently uphold and display our school values by sending positive value notifications home instantly via Sentral.

The positive values sections of our Positive Behaviour Model:

INCIDENT REPORTS:

Incident reports come in 2 formats: Quick and Medium Level Incidents. Quick incidents are used by classroom teachers to log issues around uniform, behaviour, equipment etc. These are typically addressed/resolved by a discussion after class.

BEHAVIOUR RESPONSE FLOWCHART

Our updated behaviour response flowchart can be seen below. It highlights our step by step response to behaviours. Most behaviours can be addressed rather quickly by the classroom teacher, others may need more intervention.

Medium incidents are used to log behaviours that require more extensive follow up. Medium incidents are used to help us decide on appropriate interventions for student behaviour, these interventions can include restorative conversations, parent/carer meetings, lunchtime/after school detentions, and, in some rare cases, suspensions or expulsions.

Learning Coaches are the first point of contact for parents and carers to ask any questions or to raise concerns. You can expect your child ’ s Learning Coach to be one of the first people who contacts you to raise any concerns, celebrate successes or touch base about your young learner ’ s progress.

PARENT AND CARER INVOLVEMENT:

LEARNING COACHES:

We believe that parents and carers play a crucial role in supporting their young person to make positive choices at school. With that in mind we like to involve parents/ careee and work together with our student ’ s families to ensure positive outcomes after an incident. To that end, parents/carers may sometimes be asked into school to attend a meeting to discuss their young person with members of school staff. We do this for a number of reasons, we believe that clear, open and consistant lines of communication are important for young people to be successful at school, we may ask for parents and carers to help co - design student safety plans or alternate learning programs, and we may at times need to discuss how we can best support your young learner to reintergrate into the school after a suspension or extended time away . When students, teachers and parents/carers work together in partnership we see positive resolutions to issues and concerns.

In 2023 Learning Coaches have been assigned to all students on the Secondary Campus. Learning Coaches continue the previous role of Homegroup Teachers, checking in on the wellbeing, attendance and general behaviour of their students whilst adding in an academic component to their role. This year every secondary student at The Lakes has sat down with their Learning Coach to develop learning goals for the term. Learning Coaches check in with both the academic and wellbeing progress of their students regularly throughout the term. This ties into our commitment to developing learner agency, providing students with ownership over their own learning, academic level, progress, areas for improvement and a large say over their own short and long term academic goals.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter STUDENT PERSPECTIVE

YEAR 2 REFLECTION ARJUN & ISLA YEAR 2 SRC

Hi everyone, our names are Arjun and Isla and we are your Year 2 SRC students for 2023. We have had a very exciting year so far, with lots of fun activities and excursions. We went to Westgarthtown on a bus with Katie and Liam which was fun. We also had our whole school athletics day which was super fun. We got to go in different events and games and cheer on our friends and dress up in our house colours. It was such a fun day. We are really excited to organise Crazy Hair Day for Term 2. This day will help raise awareness for Cystic Fibrosis and all the money SRC raises will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. We are both looking forward to coming to school with crazy hair and to see what colours everyone puts in their hair.

YEAR 11 REFLECTION PAIGE & NASH YEAR 11 SRC

Year 11 so far has been an eventful yet stressful ride; with getting used to the new timetable, new workload and the introduction of SACs. Students are looking forward to having the midterm break then starting Unit 2 next term, which leads us to the start of our final year of our schooling lives. Midterm exams are in Week 8 which means we have been working hard on revising for the score we all want in the end. Our teachers have been trying to get us ahead with finishing Unit 1 and 2 early, so we get started with Year 12 work and what it will be like for us. On Wednesday 24th of May, we held our official Whole School Athletics Day, with all year levels dressing up in their house colours and cheering on the team to win the House Cup. The Year 11’ s who attended participated in events and helped out with running them as well. We are looking forward to overcoming new challenges, in creating new memories and gaining new experiences for our futures.

HOME LEARNING

Working with children to help them discover mathematics in their daily lives is an excellent way for families to enjoy mathematics together. SUPPORTING MATHEMATICS WITH EXPERIENCES AT HOME

During Term 2 students on the Primary campus at The Lakes South Morang College will be covering topics relating to Measurement and Geometry. Here are some ways you can help your students reinforce their learning at home:

find something longer and shorter than an unusual object

build and describe structures using boxes and different 3D objects

predict and identify who has the largest and smallest shoe size in the house

Encourage explorative math play at home by inviting your child to:

predict and discover who is the tallest and shortest person in the family

build, measure and compare structures made with different - sized cardboard boxes

identify who is the heaviest and lightest in the house

estimate, then find the room in the house with the largest area

compare and order the size of containers when cooking

measure the length of their favourite object at home using formal or informal units (formal rulers, tape measures, informal, blocks, shoes)

find containers with a larger or smaller volume or capacity when cooking

estimating and timing how long it takes to make a sandwich, watch their favourite show, play a game

Reinforcing the vocabulary relating to measurement is a very important part of learning and helps students to discuss new concepts.

On May 24th, our school had the opportunity to host our highly anticipated Athletics Day, which had been postponed earlier due to inclement weather. Finally, the entire school gathered at the Meadowglen Athletics Centre. Our Athletics Day was a spectacular display of talent, athleticism, and enthusiasm. From the crack of the starting pistol to the exhilarating finish lines, students showcased their skills in a wide range of events. Sprinters dashed with lightning speed, long jumpers soared through the air, and shot putters displayed remarkable strength. The energy at the track was electric as cheers and applause filled the air with each impressive performance. Amidst the fierce competition, there was also a sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship, as athletes encouraged and celebrated each other's achievements. The sea of colours at our Athletics Day was enhanced by the presence of inflatable dinosaur costumes, transforming our athletes into towering prehistoric creatures, complete with roaring antics and playful competitiveness. An inflatable unicorn pranced around the track, spreading laughter with every step. These captivating costumes, along with many others, brought an extra element of joy and amusement to the event. This year's Athletics Carnival proved to be a special occassion as it was our 1 st ever Prep to 12 Athletics Carnival. The vibrant energy and excitement radiated from the youngest members of our school community, infusing the event with an infectious spirit of enthusiasm and joy. It was a remarkable sight to witness the little athletes showcasing their talents and embracing the spirit of friendly competition. Their laughter, determination, and unwavering support for one another created an atmosphere that was both heart - warming and inspiring for everyone at the track. The presence of students from both or Primary and Secondary Campus added an extra layer of unity and togetherness, reminding us that we are one united school. The atmosphere was electrifying as the crowd eagerly awaited the final results. As the dust settled and the scores were tallied, it was Evans who emerged as the victor, demonstrating their determination and unwavering focus to come from behind to win. Following closely behind was Jackson, securing a well - deserved second place finish. Rafter, clinching the third spot on the podium. Lastly, Beachley, earned a respectable fourth place. Each athlete displayed incredible prowess and sportsmanship, making it an unforgettable day for both competitors and spectators alike.
