community, their insurance premiums might increase. When you combine financial worries, the stress of seeking treatment, physical pain, and the anxiety of being unable to work, the situation becomes far more complex. While it has serious repercussions for the patient in question, an injury has reverberating effects on the patient’s family members as well. Between helping them around the house, driving them to appointments, and working extra hours to pay bills, the burden of an injury can fall just as much on a spouse or family member as it does on the patient. An injury can also have serious ramifications for the community. If a patient resides in an underserved city, not only is it difficult for him or her find a provider, but the lack of care options actually weighs on the providers who do take on personal injury cases. If they're the only ones serving the community this way, they are unable to spend as much individual time with other patients, trying simply to keep up with the numbers. Whether patients, families, providers, or the community at large, when it comes to an injury, everyone is interwoven in a tapestry of experience and consequence. Because we have experience working with patients after they’ve suffered an accident, our team understands the physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual trauma that cause reverberating effects, even long after an injury happens. Sometimes the first step toward recovery is knowing there's someone out there who understands your pain and anxiety. Our team at Louisville Sports & Injury Center is here to help.

The Ripple Effect of an Injury A Patient, Their Family, and the Community

Let’s say you're driving down the road on your commute to work. It’s a normal Monday morning on your regular route; the only difference is that there’s a little bit of snow and ice on the pavement. As you slow for the stoplight, you notice another car hitting hard on the brakes, skidding and fishtailing, ultimately colliding with three other cars. Everyone involved in the accident appears to be fine, but the cars are certainly worse for wear. If you've driven through the city on a regular basis, you’ve likely witnessed fender benders like this. When accidents happen, you might assume the only people affected are the injured drivers

— that they will see a medical provider, receive treatment, get back behind the wheel, and go about their lives. While this perspective makes sense, it merely scratches the surface of the expanding consequences an injury can have on a person, their family, and even their community. Like a stone tossed in a still pond, injuries have a ripple effect. For starters, after being involved in an accident, a patient has to find a medical provider in their insurance network. I hear stories all the time from my own patients about being turned away by providers who won’t take on personal injury cases. Then, depending on the economic situation in their

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day doesn’t have to mean heading to the local Irish bar and drinking a large green beverage. If you’re not interested in going out this year and would prefer to do something at home with the family, here are a few ways everyone can celebrate. Irish-Themed Food What better way to get festive than by making some St. Patrick’s Day-themed dishes? You can make rainbow cupcakes, green cookies, St. Patrick’s Day popcorn, or — for a more traditional dish — Irish soda bread. You can also cook up an array of greens for dinner on March 17, which could include Brussels sprouts, spinach, cucumbers, green beans, peas, or asparagus. A Mischievous Leprechaun To treat your kids to a fun game, leave green footprints around the house and participate in impish tricks! Empty a tissue box, hide the remote, swap out regular light bulbs with green ones, or draw rainbows on the windows. You’re only Another way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with your family is to sit down and read about Irish culture with your kids. Learn where the legend of the leprechaun came from or read other stories from Irish folklore. You can also watch videos of Irish dance performances and encourage the kids to make their own. There’s also fascinating history on St. Patrick and why he became the patron of the holiday that your family members can research together. If you have Irish roots, tell your kids about your heritage. Watch Irish Movies For a relaxing activity, settle down in front of the TV for a movie night filled with films related to Irish culture. Try “The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns,” “Song of the Sea,” “The Luck of the Irish,” or “The Secret of Kells.” Make an Impact Teach your kids how to be “greener” this month by doing more for the environment. Discuss ways to save energy and water in the home, and talk about the importance of taking a break from electronics and enjoying the outdoors. CELEBRATING ST. PATRICK’S DAY Family-Friendly Activities limited by your imagination. Exploring Irish Culture

To keep up with our tradition of introducing one of our amazing team members here at Louisville Sports & Injury Center, we would like to introduce Trish Banet. Trish has served as the medical assistant here in the office for over four years. Her expertise and work ethic allow us to increase the number of patients we can see, and she helps our practice flourish overall.

Because she is part of a small team, she wears several hats. As a medical assistant, she works closely with Dr. Kelly, supervising patients’ exercises and taking ultrasounds and X-rays. But she does so much more for our office. Dr. Kelly explains, “The most important part of Trish’s contribution to our team is that she is an amazing extra set of hands. She has this ability to see where she's needed and fill in the gaps.” As a former CNA, Trish brings a lot of experience to her role. She has also spent over 10 years in and out of chiropractors’ offices due to her own scoliosis diagnosis. Because she has been a patient herself, Trish offers her own patients here at the office valuable insight and empathy. She is better able to understand patients’ emotional and physical states following an injury because she has spent time in their shoes. Trish affectionately remembers relationships she has built with patients. “Getting to know the people who come in here is one of the best parts of my job,” she says. “Between hearing their stories and helping them through exercises, I feel like I never stop learning. I also get to learn from my team every single day. I feel comfortable approaching them with questions (even if I ask 20 in a row), and I think all our personalities mesh really well.” While Trish works hard in her role at the office, she’s also quite active after clocking out at the end of the day. As the “country girl” of the office, Trish spends as much time outdoors with her family as she can. In the summer months, she plans plenty of camping trips with her fiancé, kids, and granddaughter!

This list is not exhaustive by any means, but it’s a good start to get your family to create new ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. You might even create family traditions that will last for years to come.

We are so grateful to have Trish on our team. If you see her around the office, make sure you say a quick “hello!”

How to Make the Most of the Academy Awards 2. Themed Food ARE YOU A MOVIE FANATIC?

If you’re a big film buff, then there’s a good chance you set aside one important night each spring to watch the Academy Awards. A great number of memorable moments have happened during the Oscars, such as the 2017 “La La Land” best picture mix-up, the 1974 streaking incident when a naked man ran across the stage, or the 2013 falling accident when Jennifer Lawrence tripped as she walked on stage to receive her award for best actress. The Academy Awards is an event you don’t want to miss out on. Here are three ways you can get the most out of Oscars night. 1. Play Trivia Everyone loves a good trivia challenge. If you and your family watch the ceremony live, you can use the commercial breaks to test your knowledge. Pose questions about the best picture winners over the last 90 years or the actors selected for different categories. You can also find printable Oscars prediction charts and offer prizes to whoever has the highest number of correct answers.

If you’re throwing an Oscars party, serving some tasty dishes is a must. But why not kick it up a notch and keep your entrees and hors d'oeuvres in line with the blockbuster theme? There are multiple recipes for Oscars-party popcorn online, and you can also use star-shaped cookie cutters for your desserts. For your libations, you can serve cocktails from famous films and make a martini even James Bond would approve of. 3. Tickets Galore! The ticket price for the first motion picture ever shown at the oldest American movie theater cost 15–25 U.S. cents, depending on the location of your seat. Nowadays, the price of watching a film is astronomical. Fortunately, there are ways for you to create the feeling of watching a film premiere or Oscars ceremony from your own home. Find printable tickets online to distribute to your guests before the showing, and encourage them to dress like they are heading to the red carpet.
