the National Championship — we’d attend the parade instead.

The tradition is so special to me that I wanted to pass it on to my son Scott. When we decided we were going to move to Idaho, I knew the clock was ticking to get him to a game. I resolved to make that happen before it was too late. The first game we went to wasn’t actually the Rose Bowl but rather a USC home game. We went to Murray’s Ticket Agency to buy some secondhand tickets. In line, we noticed the man in front of us was wearing a Cardinals jacket. I figured he was probably a superfan until I heard the attendant call him “Coach.” Turns out, he was a USC baseball coach. I told him that I was taking Scott to his first game, which would also probably be his last. In a gesture of kindness I’ll never forget, the coach told the attendant to sell us his tickets at the price he paid for them. At that time, Scott didn’t know a Trojan from a Bruin. But as we walked to our seats, we could hardly believe our eyes. We were at the 50 yard line in the USC alumni section! Scott was 10 then and adjusting to medication that had been prescribed for his Tourette’s. Everyone in the section was friendly and understanding of Scott’s situation. By halftime, he wasn’t feeling well and was ready to go home. Before we left, though, we took the time to thank everyone in the section for being so great to Scott. If that was the only game Scott ever saw in the Coliseum, it would’ve been enough. Luckily, we were able to attend the Rose Bowl that same year. It was a perfect capstone to our time in Pasadena, and whenever I think of those years, I think of sitting in the stands with loved ones. It’s not a bad memory to start the year off with.

EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES Memories From Pasadena

If there’s one word that comes to mind when I think about New Year’s, it’s nostalgia. Growing up in Pasadena, New Year’s Day was one of the most eventful days of the year. The Tournament of Roses Parade and the Rose Bowl captured the imagination of everyone in town, including me. To this day, it doesn’t feel like New Year’s until I sit down to watch the Rose Bowl. I owe my family a huge thanks for that. My Uncle Charlie was the clubhouse manager at a swanky, exclusive country club in Pasadena. Among the members there were a number of USC alumni. Given that the L.A. Coliseum, where the USC Trojans play, is home to the Rose Bowl, these alumni often had spare tickets. They’d give them to Charlie, who would in turn gift them to my older brother, Pat.

Pat was a role model for me in many ways, and one of them was getting me interested in sports. He took me to my first Rose Bowl when I was 8. I remember it being magical. The pageantry and spectacle of the game was like nothing I’d ever experienced in my life. I’m willing to bet that many people watching the game at home while it snowed outside were inspired to move to California by the sunny San Gabriel Mountains in the background of the Coliseum. And in the 50-plus years I’ve been watching the Rose Bowl, I can only remember it raining a couple of times. From that first game grew a family tradition. Pat and I would always go to the game when we had the chance. When tickets were hard to come by — the years when USC was playing or it was

Happy 2018, everyone!

The Heart-Healthy Lifestyle IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH WITH THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Calorie-cutting diets have become a thing of the past. Instead of depriving our bodies of nutrients, we’ve turned to lifestyle changes. Losing weight and reaching a healthy nutritional balance isn’t easy, and a few months of eating 1,000 calories per day just doesn’t cut it. Enter the Mediterranean diet, a lifestyle change that’s become quite popular and effective. This diet is inspired by the traditional eating habits of people in southern Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Spain. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is a realistic and sustainable way to reduce disease- causing inflammation and lose weight, and it is one of the most heart-conscious ways of eating.

The case of a post-surgical rehab is unique because there is no diagnosis needed. The type of surgery tells us exactly what there is to know about your injury. We make sure we get the proper information from your surgeon so that we know the exact areas to dedicate our time to. This allows us to use therapy techniques based on empirical evidence, and pair them with individualized instruction to smooth out your path to recovery. All recovery processes take time, but they all require the same key to success — a desire to advance. That’s why we want to drive you to feel empowered and capable throughout the process. Coming back from surgery may take a huge physical toll, but that’s only half the battle. Having the proper mentality is paramount. Our team takes great pride in its ability to drive patients to achieve their recovery goals. Yet, while the process may start with us, you are the key to your own recovery. We can give you the book, but your drive and passion are what write the pages. • Nuts and seeds • Legumes and beans • Herbs and spices • Whole grains • Wild-caught fish and seafood • High-quality, pasture-raised poultry, eggs, cheese, goat milk, and yogurt • Red meat, but only on special occasions • Daily glasses of red wine reduced incidences of cancer and Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. In addition, women who eat a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil and mixed nuts may have a reduced risk of breast cancer. But there are still a lot of misconceptions surrounding this lifestyle change. Many people believe it costs a small fortune. However, if you craft meals with beans or lentils as your main source of protein and eat mostly plants and whole grains, the Following the Mediterranean diet has many benefits. The Mayo Clinic credits this lifestyle with SERVICE HIGHLIGHT

Mediterranean diet is far less expensive than processed foods.

Some Mediterranean diet enthusiasts may believe that if a daily glass of wine is good for your heart, then three glasses per day is okay, too. While moderate amounts of red wine certainly have unique heart benefits, drinking too much has the opposite effect. The Mayo Clinic recommends no more than 5 ounces of wine daily for women and men over 65, and no more than 10 ounces per day for those under 65. Anything more is bad for your heart. But even if you switch over to Mediterranean- friendly recipes, your work doesn’t stop there. It’s also important to mirror the other ways Mediterraneans live their lives. When it’s time to eat, don’t rush or watch TV. Sit down, relax, and enjoy a leisurely meal with others. And of course, get plenty of exercise.

The Mediterranean lifestyle promotes heart- healthy foods, including the following:

• Fresh fruits and vegetables, especially leafy greens and non-starchy veggies • Olive oil

POST-SURGICAL RECOVERY Let Us Help You Advance in Your Rehab

Going through surgery can be one of the most daunting and defining moments in someone’s life. The toll it takes on the body can’t be mimicked by any other event. Whether it’s acute or from overuse, personal injury is challenging mentally, physically, and emotionally. This makes the road to recovery incredibly unique and equally as complex. circumstances. Because every patient is different, we tailor each rehabilitation program based on your injury. What works for a 55-year-old coming off of back surgery is different than a 23-year- old recovering from a muscle strain. This is why a highly qualified and experienced therapist is necessary. We properly identify your needs and make sure your plan will get you back in action as soon as possible. This is especially evident in our specialized rehab service we offer for patients recovering from a surgery. Recovery is a broad term, but the process is not. It requires a keen understanding of your

RECIPE: Pistachio Goji Berry Granola

Okay, I admit it. I have a dog crush. You see, there’s this dog, and I think it’s a lab. I don’t know if it’s male or female, so I’ll use the word “it.” This dog has the greatest job in the world, I think. It gets to be at a football game and meet a lot of human friends. Then it gets wild applause and adoration when it runs out onto the field, picks up something the ball was placed on, and brings it back to where he started from. Personally, I think a better job would be to chase whoever catches the ball, but that’s just me. I get jealous and want to meet this dog so much that I bark, run up to the TV, and jump up and down, totally excited out of my mind. It irritates Al and Michelle when they’re trying to relax and watch the game. I don’t blame them, but seeing the dog do that job really gets me all “doodled up.” That’s goldendoodle lingo for extremely happy and excited.

So, like good boy, I go back and lay between them until the next Bronco kickoff, when I get doodled again. My point here is that going back to lay between my owners is something I treasure. I hope the lucky lab dog gets to do the same at home when it’s away from its job at the football game. When I’m with my owners, I realize I should feel lucky and blessed that I have a job too. My message: Be the best you can be at whatever you’re doing at the moment. Harry

Escape to Nicaragua After the hectic holiday season, many of us feel like we need another vacation just to unwind. Luckily, January and February are two of the best months to travel. in the quirky-yet-beautiful architecture of Granada, there’s something for everyone in this tropical wonderland. One must-see destination is the Cerro Negro volcano. Just a baby at 150 years old, it’s one of the most active volcanoes in the region. It only takes about an hour to scale its smoking, black gravel surface, and the verdant forests surrounding the peak are a sight to behold. Adventurous travelers can board down the side, reaching ludicrous speeds as they teeter and try not to fall. In fact, it’s almost impossible to travel anywhere in the country without seeing an “I boarded a volcano” T-shirt. If relaxing on a pearlescent beach is more your speed, take a short boat trip out to the Corn Islands. There, you can amble around the small

towns bordering the shockingly blue Pacific, visit a number of laid-back seafood restaurants, get scuba certified for a fraction of the price anywhere else in the world, or just read your book as you swing in a hammock by the waves. You can also visit the gorgeous, alabaster Our Lady of Grace Cathedral in “new” Léon. The biggest church in all of Central America, this unique Baroque and neoclassicist structure was built in 1814. Visitors can climb onto its roof (as long as they don’t wear shoes) and bask in the view of surrounding volcanoes (including Cerro Negro). If you’re planning on heading to Nicaragua, it’s best to do it soon. Neighbor Costa Rica often overflows with tourists, and instead of wading through the crowds there, many travelers are catching on to what Nicaragua has to offer.

If you’re looking to escape the dreary winter weather, there’s no better place to visit this season than Nicaragua, the “Central American country that has it all,” as Condé Nast Traveler puts it. Whether

you’re looking to explore the rainforests surrounding the Río San Juan or get lost
