A Holiday Tradition Fit for a King

AND A HAWK, TOO

Hunting season is here!

it’s still a sight to behold. We’re all giddy to be hunting together, but King and Hawk are the happiest of all. While the experience of sharing a hunt together is all the reward we need, we always make use of the birds we bring home. An old hunting buddy of mine, who also happened to own a restaurant, handed over a recipe for pheasant that always graces our holiday table. Sharing a communal meal with loved ones is always memorable, but it’s doubly so when you’ve provided the centerpiece of the meal. Over the years, I think we’ve grown divorced from the source of our food. To many people, chicken breast is something that comes in a shrink-wrapped package, not something that comes from a living creature. When you hunt the game yourself, you’re well aware that a

There are plenty of universal signs that the holidays are coming. The days get shorter, the temperature gets cooler, and the Santa-themed commercials start to appear everywhere. But for my family, the real signal that the most wonderful time of the year is here is the start of quail- and pheasant-hunting season in Kansas. For as long as I can remember, my father took me hunting at the start of the season. Serendipitously, the opening day usually coincided with his birthday, giving us the perfect excuse to get away for a long weekend. I’ve passed the tradition on to my son Dane, who has introduced it to his son Forrest. Sharing one of my favorite childhood activities with my grandson is special beyond words. We’ve turned it into a bonding experience that spans four generations — and hopefully many more to come.

creature has given its life to provide you with sustenance. Honoring that sacrifice through respect and proper preparation is very important to us. This year, Dane and Forrest will be traveling from Boulder to join me on our yearly hunt. Between heading out and coming back, it will feel like the holidays have begun in earnest. Regardless of what we bring home, the trip is always a success, because it’s time spent doing something I enjoy with people I love.

And it’s not just the human members of our family that take part. We have two bird dogs, King and Hawk, who are integral to making the trip a success. Honestly, one of the most fun aspects

4 WINTER ILLNESSES YOU’D RATHER AVOID Know What to Look For Before They Attack

Achoo! That’s the last noise you want to hear this winter. Cold weather brings a slew of sicknesses, so be vigilant to treat these common illnesses, or better yet, avoid them altogether. THE COMMON COLD Although there is no cure, a cold is easier to treat than other illnesses. If you or a loved one has a runny nose, low-grade fever, headache, cough, nasal congestion, or sore throat, the common cold has most likely taken hold. With the help of rest and perhaps some cold medicine, like cough drops and decongestants, the cold will come and go in about a week. BRONCHIOLITIS Bronchiolitis appears most commonly in children less than a year old and is caused by other viruses. Of the many symptoms — nasal congestion, low-grade fevers, and coughing — wheezing is the one you should be most concerned about. If your child is having difficulty breathing and is dehydrated, they may have caught a more serious strain of the virus.

Most children will recover with at-home rest, but some may need to be hospitalized for more severe symptoms. INFLUENZA The flu is known for causing high fever, muscle aches and pains, nausea, and other symptoms similar to a cold. Often, the fever will last for around five days, but it can be shortened with the aid of antiviral medications. However, these medications are recommended only for children who face serious complications or hospitalization from the flu. If you want to avoid catching this, your best bet is to receive the annual flu vaccine. vomiting, and high fever are signs of strep. This infection is treated with antibiotics and should be addressed soon after the first symptoms appear to prevent further complications. Children with strep throat should stay away from school and other activities until they’ve been on antibiotics for 24 hours. STREP THROAT A sore throat, headache, stomach ache,

Everyone knows that getting sick is no fun and is best avoided at all costs. However, it happens to everyone eventually. Catching a virus or infection in its early stages can help you shake the sickness much faster.

SPOTLIGHT ON DR. J. BUTLER Our Implant Specialist

Dental implant technology has advanced leaps and bounds in recent years. It’s now one of the greatest weapons in our cosmetic-dentistry arsenal, allowing patients to receive safe, long-lasting tooth replacements that match the natural appearance of their mouths. Of course, placing these implants requires an expert periodontist who specializes in such procedures. Luckily, we have just the specialist on our team. His name is Dr. J. Butler, and we’re honored to work with him. Dr. Butler is based in Bartlesville but travels to our office twice per month to place implants. “Working on implants is one of the most gratifying pursuits I could ever imagine,” Dr. Butler says. “The process takes time, but when you place the final prosthesis, you see a patient’s spirits rise instantly.” Because his expertise is so in-demand, Dr. Butler has worked with many practices during his 22 years as a periodontist. “I can say without reservation,” he reveals, “that Masterpiece Smiles is as thoughtful and thorough as any practice I’ve encountered. Dr. Cobble and his team genuinely care about their patients, explain treatment options, and provide only the best in cosmetic- dentistry services. I may not be a full-time member of the team, but I’m very lucky to spend some of my time in their office. It’s a wonderful change of scenery and a chance to treat an entirely different patient pool than at my regular practice.” Speaking of scenery, Dr. Butler spends his free time managing his beautiful 800- acre ranch. “I breed bulls as a hobby,” he says. “Every year, we sell about 50 of them as a way to improve the gene pool for local ranches. It’s a passion of mine, so it doesn’t feel like work, but my wife and kids might argue that point.” Providing the best care to patients requires working with best-in-class specialists who understand their field better than anyone else in our area. Dr. Butler certainly fits that bill, offering spectacular implants to our patients. He’s an integral part of Masterpiece Smiles, even if he’s only in our office for a few hours per month.

Get Away and Be Festive This Holiday Season CHRISTMAS TOURS

out of a John Wayne classic. For holiday admirers looking for a unique spin, Jackson has you covered.

Rockefeller Center’s landscaping crews, who scout out trees years in advance. It remains lit from November to early January, so you have plenty of time to check it out. Ranch Christmas in Jackson, Wyoming Jackson, Wyoming, takes its frontier culture to the next level during the Christmas season. All year, the city proudly displays four elk antler arches, but around the holidays, they are lit up with white string lights and flanked by snow. The Christmas decorations and lights surrounding the archway make for a Western-themed holiday pulled right

There’s nothing quite like the magical lights of the holiday season, and some destinations in the U.S. have perfected the craft of holiday decoration. If you’re looking to get away this December and still engage in seasonal festivities, add one of these places to your must-visit list.

Yearly Yuletide in Santa Claus, Indiana This one’s for the Christmas lover. If you can’t make it out to Santa Claus, Indiana, this holiday season, you can still celebrate Christmas in this tiny Midwestern town in January, June, or even October. Embracing its unique name, the town boasts a museum, holiday shopping center, and a Christmas theme park. In a moving tribute, the town’s residents also write responses to children’s letters to Kris Kringle himself. It’s impossible to avoid holiday cheer in this town. Disney World’s Christmas Magic What better place to celebrate the most magical time of the year than in the most magical place on Earth? Walt Disney World’s halls are decked to the max with a parade, gingerbread homes, strings of lights, and festive parties. Plus, costs to visit Disney World can be cheaper during the Christmas season, so keep an eye out for a vacation steal.
