HELPING YOUNG ATHLETES PREVENT INJURIES & IMPROVE THEIR GAME

WHY THE OFF-SEASON IS IMPORTANT

If you’re an NFL fan, then you might not need extra reasons to celebrate this time of year, But with Nov. 5 officially designated as American Football Day, you have even more grounds to put on your favorite jersey, load up the barbecue, and crowd in front of the TV to watch one of the greatest displays of athleticism and strength known to humankind. While I look forward to watching football this time of year, I’ve actually been spending most of my free time helping coach my son’s baseball team. Owning a physical therapy clinic and getting to witness all these kids spend as much time as they possibly can practicing and understanding as much as possible about the sport, I keep thinking about how important it is for young athletes to strengthen their bodies in the off- season to ensure they are physically sound during game time. Nowadays, there seems to be a big push to help kids hit more home runs, make more tackles, and sink more 3-pointers. But there’s not enough attention paid to ensuring their musculoskeletal system can withstand the bigger, faster, and stronger gameplay. In more 3-pointers. But there’s not enough attention paid to ensuring their musculoskeletal system can withstand the bigger, faster, and stronger gameplay.” “Nowadays, there seems to be a big push to help kids hit more home runs, make more tackles, and sink

truth, this is one of the main reasons why so many injuries occur. Athletes’ bodies don’t have the foundation to keep up.

The other primary cause for frequent sports-related injuries is that most young athletes no longer have a designated off- season to train. The ones who focus on one sport will often play year-round, and the others who play multiple sports finish one season only to jump straight into the start of the next. As someone who grew up playing basketball and baseball from my kindergarten years through college, I remember spending nearly every waking hour crafting my abilities. I’d spend about two hours at practice and then come home and play in the driveway. While I was one of the lucky ones who didn’t have to deal with the pain and aftermath of big injuries sustained on the field or court, working with patients at Regenerative Physical Therapy & Wellness, I’ve created rehabilitation plans for a number of teenage athletes who’ve had recent elbow, knee, or shoulder surgeries. You can’t improve upon your strength and mechanics during the regular season because your body is working too hard to win games. And, without an off- season to build up a solid foundation, you not only leave your body open to more injuries, but you also can’t reach your full potential as an athlete.

time with a physical therapist or licensed personal trainer to have him evaluated for movement issues. (It’s important that the personal trainer you see is licensed in order to receive proper care.) All young athletes, regardless of age, need to be under advisement from someone who understands how the body is supposed to function in order to identify any abnormal movements. For example, at our office, we conduct full- body assessments from head to toe. If we detect any muscle tissue that’s not working the way it should be, we work on improving that area through therapy or general strengthening. If your child is like mine and has aspirations to play sports for as long as they can, then it’s of the utmost importance that they be evaluated for movement abnormalities and find time to work on strengthening any problematic areas. Even if they’re young, sports still cause their bodies to break down. But by finding time for off-season foundational work, they will not just prevent injuries; they’ll drastically improve their game. -Daniel Tribby

WHY YOU NEED TO BRINE YOUR THANKSGIVING TURKEY

The best way to take your Thanksgiving dinner to the next level is to brine your turkey.

2. Once your cooler is ready, mix the hot water, salt, and sugar. Stir to dissolve. Then, add broth and ice. 3. If there is anything in the body cavity of the turkey, be sure to remove it. Submerge the turkey breast-side up. Should the turkey float, simply add a sealed bag of cold water on top of it to hold it down. You want to make sure the turkey is completely submerged. 4. Once it’s settled at least an inch under the brine, cover the cooler with the lid and store it in a cool place. Let brine for 12–48 hours. If

First, brining your turkey elevates the flavor. It infuses the meat with a light savory-sweetness that brings out the flavor of the turkey itself. Second, it adds moisture. No one likes a dry turkey with dinner, and brining helps to keep it from losing as much moisture as it otherwise would while cooking, leaving you with mouthwatering results. Third, brining your turkey means you get to “wow” your dinner guests that much more. When they take their first bite, they won’t believe this Thanksgiving staple could be so tender, juicy, and flavorful! Alton Brown, chef and TV personality (and a huge fan of a well-cooked turkey) is credited with developing one of the best brines. Here’s what you need:

1/2 gallon hot tap water

8 lb ice (which equals a gallon of water)

the brine gets above 40 degrees F, add more ice. Keep a thermometer handy to periodically check the temperature. This is to prevent bacteria from making a home in your brine and turkey.

1 lb kosher salt

16 cups (128 oz) vegetable broth

2/3 cup sugar

This recipe is for an 18-pound turkey, but you can adjust the ingredient amounts to suit your needs. The amounts do not need to be exact, but you should try to keep it close.

5. After 12–48 hours, prepare your turkey as desired. For the best results, roast your turkey until it reaches an internal temperature of 161 degrees F for the breast and 181 degrees F for the thighs.

1. Before you brine the turkey, get a cooler it will fit in. Make sure to clean the cooler with soap and water before using it!

Goal Setting, Individualized Treatment, and Evidence-Based Exercises WHAT MAKES OUR PATIENTS 50% MORE SUCCESSFUL AT TREATMENT COMPLETION?

Every year, some 9 million adult Americans use physical therapy services. But according to a WebPT survey conducted in 2018, over 7,000 clinics report their patients only complete 10% of the full treatment regimen. Patients cited that the two primary reasons they stopped attending their sessions were as follows: 1) The money they were spending on treatment didn’t provide enough individualized time with a certified therapist or trainer, and 2) the exercises they were prescribed were basic enough to do on their own. Our team here at Regenerative Physical Therapy & Wellness understands that in order to develop a treatment program that’s conducive to full healing, patients must have the opportunity for one-on-one sessions with certified physical therapists and athletic trainers where they can get undivided attention for a full hour. In many other physical therapy programs, we’ve noticed an unfortunate shift occurring. The number of patients seen is favored over the quality of personal care. Patients are pushed through a systematic approach. It doesn’t matter if the patient is a 16-year-old football player who is hoping to return to gameplay as soon as possible or 65-year-old grandmother who is hoping to play with her grandkids in the yard. With this rushed method of treatment, patients simply aren’t getting the care they need or deserve.

That’s why we have taken a completely different approach. Our licensed

experts sit down with a new patient, listen to their unique story, understand their individualized therapy goals, and then come up with a treatment plan to help get them there. Our team is passionate about forging relationships with our patients, and through personalized one- on-one sessions, we are able to

help patients achieve their goals more effectively. Fortunately, our approach has proven successful. Our dedication to providing

quality, evidence-based, and scientifically proven exercise programs has helped 60% of our patients complete their treatment program. That’s 50% more than the national average! To see our approach in action or to learn more about evidence-based healing, you can reach out to our team of experts today by calling our office at 407-753-2192!

ARE YOUR MIND AND BODY FULLY CONNECTED? OUR REDCORD SUSPENSION SYSTEM MIGHT BE THE RECIPE FOR A PAIN-FREE LIFE!

When your body and mind are properly connected, the resulting effect can feel nothing short of amazing. But, if you’ve suffered an injury, your brain’s ability to utilize the correct muscles at the correct time, using just the right amount of force, can easily become impaired. When this happens, the connection between your brain and specific joints in your body falters, which causes the muscles in the surrounding area to overcompensate for the loss in function. Unfortunately, this leads to abnormal movement, muscle strains, and pain. Because our philosophy at Regenerative Physical Therapy & Wellness involves a holistic approach, we use neuromuscular activation to improve your mind-body connection in order to help return you to a pain-free state. WHAT IS NEUROMUSCULAR ACTIVATION? With its many syllables, neuromuscular activation might sound like an intense process, but we’ve actually had patients refer to it as “a ton of fun” — and that’s because it is! We start by looking at how your body moves as a whole, searching for muscular deficits and abnormal movement that may be contributing to the root cause of your pain. Next comes our amazing Redcord Suspension System . While you are weightlessly suspended, your therapist accelerates your motor learning,

enabling neurons in your brain to be more energized and efficient at doing their job. Similar to floating in a swimming pool, this pain-free environment is safe for any age, condition, and strength level, and it allows you to focus on each precise movement pattern.

This treatment method has proven effective for many of our patients. Check out Sherry’s story below:

“I was diagnosed a year ago with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Getting up and down was so painful that I didn’t want to move, but Redcord therapy was and is the answer for me. Strong functioning muscles are necessary for people like me who suffer from a debilitating disease or condition that makes life so miserable. It is pain-free physical therapy with amazing results. Plus, Regenerative Physical Therapy & Wellness is a first-class facility. Daniel and his team are friendly, professional, and specialized!” If Redcord therapy worked for miracles for Sherry, it can work for you, too! Call our office today to see how you can get started on your journey to a happy, pain-free life.

CELEBRATING GIVING TUESDAY SUPPORTING THE PEOPLE YOU BELIEVE IN

November is usually all about Thanksgiving, but it isn’t the only holiday that encourages generosity. Giving Tuesday is a phenomenal celebration in which millions of people from across the globe are inspired to spend 24 hours giving back to the communities they love. ORIGIN AND GOAL Giving Tuesday is celebrated every year on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, and this year, the holiday lands on Dec. 3! It was established in 2012 by the United Nations Foundation and New York’s 92nd Street Y as a response to consumer-driven holidays like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The purpose of the holiday was to spread the spirit of giving, not only for the people in our nation but individuals across the world. The goal is “to create a massive wave of generosity that lasts well beyond that day and touches every person on the planet.” TECHNOLOGY AT ITS BEST Through the use of social media and technology, the organization hopes to encourage and spread generosity on a global scale using the hashtag #GivingTuesday. The website states that “... technology and social media could be used to make generosity go viral; that people fundamentally want to give and talk about giving.” Through

massive social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, the individuals and companies participating in Giving

Tuesday can spread their missions and messages all over the world, encouraging others to do the same.

HOW YOU CAN CELEBRATE Now is the perfect opportunity to support your community and the causes you believe in. The best part

of this holiday is that “giving” doesn’t just refer to donating money. People can give back by volunteering their time to help a nonprofit business, donating goods and food, or just buying a stranger some lunch. Even the smallest actions can have the biggest impact. If you’re interested in participating in Giving Tuesday, get together with your friends, family, sports team members, or neighbors to brainstorm on how you can give back. To learn more about how you can participate, visit GivingTuesday.org.
