Katie May - “Mental Health of Athletes vs Non Athletes” (poster session) Previous studies have shown that mental health has become an important factor in college students' lives, especially athletes. The stigma around “mental toughness” for college athletes has had a negative effect on their everyday lives. This is a very significant topic as college athletes are known to struggle with their mental health more than a non-athlete. The present study examines the differences in the mental health of college athletes vs non athletes by examining self reports of anxiety, depression, and sleep. The hypothesis of the current study is that athletes report higher levels of anxiety, depression, and lower quality sleep patterns than a non athlete would, concluding that college athletes are at a higher risk for lower mental health patterns. Participants were Missouri Valley College students and they took a brief survey measuring the mental health of athletes and non athletes. Results will be discussed during the presentation. Carla Medina González - Art Showcase (poster session) Leonardo Mendes - “Police Prejudice Against African Americans in the US: Historical Roots, Ongoing Problem, and Solutions for Change” (session 7) This essay explores the issue of police prejudice against African Americans in the United States, particularly in light of the George Floyd case. The author argues that an anti-racist philosophy needs to be implemented in the police force, such as by providing sociology classes at the police academy and requiring body-cams for officers in action. The author also discusses the historical roots of this prejudice and the ongoing problem of passive racism in society. Furthermore, the essay highlights how mass incarceration and a fear of police perpetuate this problem. Lastly, the author discusses the role of prejudice within the police force itself and the need to address discrimination and barriers for minority groups. Yago Merino, “Arguing the Morality of Veganism” (session 12) More and more people become vegan every day, and even if some do it for dietary reasons, most do it intending to join the philosophical movement of veganism itself. This movement rejects or tries to exclude any kind of exploitation or cruel treatment of animals for food or any other purposes. From an external point of view, this philosophical idea sounds ecological and environmentally friendly, but is it as good as it may look? Derrick Merritte & Cameron Fleener - “A Breath of Fresh Air” (poster session) This project will breakdown almost all things there is to know about Asthma. This will be not only for individuals with asthma but also for people to understand and help an individual with Asthma if help is needed. We will also incorporate the lifestyle of individuals with Asthma and show how truly different and challenging it can really be. This in turn will open up the minds of the struggles of Asthma and truly be a “Breath of Fresh Air.”
