Paula Romero - “Inclusivity in Modern Comedy: Brooklyn Nine-Nine ” (session 8) Modern comedy has adopted many forms and totally diverted from the basis of ancient comedy. An uprising format over the last few years has been sitcom, but especially in the last decade, these have included different components that make them groundbreaking and out of the box comedy. One very accurate example of this new type of comedy is the show Brooklyn Nine-Nine . For this project, we will be analyzing its witty writing, bringing a diverse cast into the scene, and the skillful handling of sensitive topics such as racial profiling, LGBTQ+ issues, and police brutality. Brooklyn Nine-Nine , in addition to many other sitcoms, has brought a new purpose to comedy, other than making people laugh and entertain their audience. Andrés Rueda De León, “Student-athletes’ Wellbeing in College” (poster session) This study looks to analyze the student-athletes’ wellbeing and determine if there is relationship between being a student athlete and their wellbeing. The study goal is to determine if the student-athlete’s wellbeing deteriorates during college by measuring the presence of symptoms affecting the student-athletes’ wellbeing such as indicators of depression, anxiety, eating disorders and the excess of physical training. A survey was created in Google forms with the following sections: Depression & Anxiety, Eating Disorders & Excess of Physical Training, Academic and Athletic Performance, and Demographics. Each factor had a set of questions where participants selected a number in the scale from 1-5. This paper aims to explore the impact of the student-athletes wellbeing on the overall performance in college by showing that the association between GPA and athletic results are mediated by the student-athlete’s wellbeing. From the standpoint of safety, this study emphasizes the relevance of student-athlete wellbeing and the elements that may influence it. Brooke-Lynn Rush - “Is There a Connection Between Concussion and Mental Health?” (poster session) A survey was created for the Missouri Valley College athletes but the primary investigator selected certain sports to be included in the study. This survey is involving college athletes that have or had concussions. Some college athletes have had multiple concussions so that will be looked out throughout this study as well. In the survey there will be questions about the college athletes’ mental health and how their concussion affected their mental health. There have been many cases where the college athlete doesn’t seek a trainer's help after encountering a concussion. That situation will be looked at throughout the study. A concussion has side effects that can make an athlete experience depression, anxiety, high stress levels, and being easily irritable. Those side effects will be asked about during the survey. A concussion can affect a college athlete's mental health. The results of this survey will be discussed in the poster session.
