April 2018

A pril is here, and what an exciting month it is! Tulips burst from the soil and show off their bright petals, gray skies surrender to sunshine, and for a moment, we sit back, take a breath, and let ourselves be awestruck by the beauty of this world. It is only fitting that Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22, when the brilliance of nature captures our attention. Earth Day is a great time to remind ourselves of the importance of protecting the Earth; it’s our home, our children’s home, and our grandchildren’s home. At Fleschner, Stark, Tanoos & Newlin, we have made it a priority to be a green business and to make environmentally friendly choices. Below are a few of the steps we have taken to become an environmentally conscious business. • We went “paperless.”Years ago, as our client base grew, we noticed the amount of paper we were using was increasing as well. In fact, it was out of hand. Although we were used to the old system of printing everything on paper and filing it away, we made the decision to go paperless. All documents we receive are now scanned into our secure system for easy finding and then recycled. If a document can simply be prepared on a computer and saved to the system without being printed, we do that. Our referrals continue to be one of the best ways clients find us, and we deeply appreciate it! for your trust and confidence. thank you

• We recycle. If an item can be recycled, we do so. We have designated areas in each of our buildings where materials can be placed to be recycled. • We use technology to communicate whenever a paper document is not necessary. A client portal is used to contact clients, communicate with clients, and share documents. The portal eliminates the need to print, stuff envelopes, and mail. • We use LED lights. As we change the lights in our offices, we’ve been replacing them with LED lights. LED lights not only last longer than other types of lighting, but they also use less energy. • We use bottleless watercoolers. Employees at each of our office buildings have access to a bottleless, filtered watercooler (a water system that does not require the use of a large plastic water jug). Employees are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles to fill, decreasing our use of plastic tremendously. • We volunteer with United Way. Each year, we volunteer with United Way to clean up litter in our community. Some of the aforementioned steps were easier to implement than others. It just takes one step to get started. We encourage you to take a look at the choices you make in your own business or home, and we challenge you to join us on our journey of making responsible, eco-friendly choices.

After spending a winter cooped up inside with your family, there might be a little tension between everyone. Fortunately, it’s spring, and the warm weather, melting snow, and blooming flowers offer a good way to ease restlessness. This season, why not bring your family closer together by starting a family garden?

whole family involved with a single project, and you can literally share the fruits of your labor.

Deciding on Plants

When it comes to deciding which plants you want in your garden, there are many variables to consider. Do you want to grow edible plants, ones that have magnificent blossoms, or ones that are easy to care for? Flowers are a good start if you want a plant that grows a little faster; plus, they lend a pop of color to your garden. Growing vegetables is also rewarding, as the kids will take great pleasure in eating what they’ve grown. Other possibilities include sunflowers, blackberries, peas, and lettuce. You might be surprised at how willingly children eat their greens when they’ve had a hand in growing them.

A Learning Experience

Nearly every step in the gardening process can be a learning experience for kids and parents alike. Begin by discussing where you should start and why, what supplies you’ll need, and the types of plants you want to grow. Gardening also offers opportunities to learn about science, ecology, and nutrition.

Collaboration

Gardening gives your family a chance to collaborate. When you’re stuck inside for long periods, you may be spending time together, but it’s usually not quality time. Working in a group to create and maintain a garden is a hands-on experience for everyone. It’s a chance to get the

Family gardens can bring something new and fresh to your home. So, get outside, enjoy the sun, and discover the joys of plants and gardening.

Welcome Our New Family Law Attorney: MICHAEL NASSER

We are excited to announce Michael Nasser as the newest attorney in our firm. Michael received his law degree from Indiana University’s Robert H. McKinney School of Law. While there, he participated in the disability clinic. Before law school, Michael attended Indiana State University, where he graduated with honors with a degree in marketing. Michael uses his legal expertise to help individuals receive deserved Social Security disability benefits and to help them navigate through challenging family law issues. Michael is being mentored by one of our own partners, Dennis Stark (who’s also Michael’s uncle). Outside of work, you can typically find Michael attending a sporting event — or at least discussing sports with friends and family. If not, he is probably at a concert. Michael is a huge fan of the Dave Matthews Band; he even travels across the country to see them perform. In fact, he is heading to Washington this fall to see them play a three-day concert at The Gorge. Somewhere between practicing law, watching sports, and attending concerts, Michael likes to enjoy a steak fresh off the grill. Maybe, just maybe, the firm will take him out to dinner for a steak to celebrate his employment with us.

April Fools’ Pranks From the Pre-Internet Age

April Fools’ Day isn’t what it used to be. Sure, it’s still a fun distraction, with Google announcing “scratch and sniff” digital technology and Amazon declaring new features enabling Alexa to understand your pets. But it’s pretty hard for anyone to genuinely pull your leg in the internet age. Back when you couldn’t debunk a hoax with a simple Snopes search, things were a little more interesting. Here are a few of the most hilarious — yet somehow convincing — April Fools’ pranks in history. When NPR’s popular “Talk of the Nation” program announced in 1992 that former President Richard Nixon had announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination, listeners were shocked. Never mind that he’d been the center of the largest presidential scam in history, but his campaign slogan, “I never did anything wrong, and I won’t do it again,” left something to be desired. NPR even brought political Nixon for President, 1992

experts on the show to discuss the ramifications of such a move, and listeners flooded the station with outraged calls — until host John Hockenberry revealed that the on-air Nixon was actually comedian Rich Little.

Swiss Spaghetti Growers Enjoy Record Harvest

Ah, to be as naive as we were during the early days of television. In 1957, a BBC news show called “Panorama” conducted a special report on a massive spaghetti harvest in Ticino, Switzerland, following a remarkably mild winter. The black and white images showed farmers pulling huge strands of noodles off tall trees and prompted hundreds of viewers to call into the station and ask how they might procure their own spaghetti tree.

Thomas Edison’s Amazing Food Machine

When Edison was in his prime, Americans truly believed he could create anything— even a machine that transformed air, water, and dirt into biscuits, vegetables, meat, and wine, as reported by the New York Daily Graphic in 1878. The article was reprinted in newspapers across the country. Thousands of people bought the trick. When Buffalo’s Commercial Advertiser ran an editorial on Edison’s genius in the endeavor, The Graphic reprinted it in full, along with the headline,“They Bite!”
