Saving our patients time in general was a big theme at the conference. Photobiomodulation is a promising new technique in orthodontic care. With photobiomodulation, we use light to help the cells in the mouth produce more energy in order to facilitate the growth of bone cells. The analogy is simple: If you take a stick of butter straight out of the fridge and try to cut it, it’s going to be a struggle. But if you heat the butter beforehand, the process goes much more smoothly. Not only that, but photobiomodulation reduces pain discomfort during treatment significantly, allowing for completely medication- free applications. At any given moment, I am working to improve myself, my skills, and my practice. Gatherings like the AAO Conference are an opportunity to grow

five-day event with a wide selection of lectures aimed at keeping us orthodontists up to date. When serving patients is your passion, these conferences are a lot of fun. They give you an opportunity to meet up with those colleagues you don’t often get to see — I had lunch with a friend I hadn’t seen in 25 years — while absorbing a vast amount of knowledge. I was even invited to work with other top doctors in Invisalign to push the technology forward into the future. The whole conference was abuzz with discussion of new phone-based technologies that will aid our practices, especially the latest dental monitoring phone tools. Dental monitoring is essentially using an app on your phone to take pictures of your teeth in the middle of alignment treatment that then gets sent to your orthodontist, allowing us to more closely monitor the progress of your treatment while reducing the need for further office visits. We were an early adopter

Before I say anything else, I’d like to say a big thank-you to everyone who came out for our Friends and Family Day on May 12. We were so excited to meet the people closest to our patients and help them in any way we could. All of us at Alborzi Orthodontics appreciate each and every one of you so much, and thanks again for the huge turnout! I hope every new person who came through our doors last month had a positively exemplary experience. We strive to create the most comfortable, welcoming environment possible, while applying the latest and greatest in orthodontic technologies and practices. Staying abreast of cutting-edge techniques in the orthodontic field is a vital part of providing robust service to our patients. To that end, I’m always participating in various orthodontic conferences and events. Most recently, I attended the massive annual American Association of Orthodontics

and learn as both an orthodontist and as an individual. Even more importantly, they equip me with the tools to serve my patients more effectively, comfortably, and efficiently than ever. – Dr. Alexa Alborzi

4 DRINK HACKS TO KEEP YOUR BEVERAGE COOL

The sun is summer’s greatest ally — and greatest enemy. For every sun-soaked day at the beach, there are sunburns trying to ruin the party. For every excuse to drink an icy beverage, the sunshine’s more determined to keep the drink from staying cool. These hacks will allow you to enjoy the benefits of the summer sun without the side effect of a warm beverage. First, let’s say you just got home from the grocery store where you purchased a 12-pack of your favorite soda. You’re thirsty and it’s room temperature at best, right? Patience is a virtue, but there’s nothing wrong with accelerating the process. Fill a bowl with ice water and add a teaspoon of salt, then submerge a can of soda in the

bowl. This process will cool your drink more than twice as fast as just putting it in the freezer. This other example requires less work, but it takes more freezer space. And if you’re like the rest of us, your freezer is pretty packed in the summer! Wet a paper towel and wrap it around a bottle or can before you place it in the freezer. The contents inside will cool much more quickly. If you have more time to plan, this hack will keep your drink cold for longer. Ice doesn’t fit in a bottle, and freezing your beer or other beverage will get you to Slushy Town in a hurry. Fill an empty bottle about halfway, put the cap on, and place it in the freezer on its side. When it’s frozen, pour your favorite beverage inside — the ice from top to bottom will keep the contents cool on the go.

Bonus Hack: This has nothing to do with the sun, but is still a neat way to make drinking your beverage easier. If you go fancy and use a straw when you drink from a can, you know how hard it is to get the straw to stay put. Spin the can’s tab around and feed the straw through it. Now you’ll have a well-behaved straw that doesn’t shift around when you need it to be there for you. R fer a Frien

The sun is hot, and the summer is long.

You need the comfort of a cool beverage to help you get through it. Keep cool, wear sunscreen, and have fun!

Leave It to a Professional THE DANGERS OF DIY BRACES

In the past few years, do-it-yourself (DIY) projects have become increasingly popular. They can range from home improvement projects to homemade beauty supplies, but the newest trend in DIY projects has nothing to do with home decor — it has to do with your teeth. People have started to take orthodontics into their owns hands by attempting to straighten teeth with items such as fishing line, electrical wire, rubber bands, and paper clips. Doctors say they’ve seen an increase in patients who have tried DIY braces. These projects have gained traction on social media, where teens make videos that capture their smile-correcting attempts. The American Association of Orthodontics reported that 13 percent of its members see patients who have tried DIY braces. The numbers are so alarming that the organization has reissued a public service announcement warning of the danger.

of the cost. The allure of a cheap, quick fix for bad teeth is compelling. However, orthodontists compare DIY braces to playing Russian roulette with your teeth. Going the cheap route can cause serious infection and damage to the teeth and gums, which could end up costing significantly more than traditional braces in the long run. When you use DIY braces, you can move your teeth too quickly and along the wrong paths, which can cause the root to dissolve. You also run the risk of creating clenching problems, muscle spasms, jaw joint issues, and shooting pain. In the end, you can cause permanent damage to your bones and gums, and your teeth can even fall out! Ultimately, DIY braces can permanently harm your teeth and gums and can end up costing you even more money in corrective work. If you want straight, healthy teeth, leave it to a professional.

For most people, the appeal of DIY braces stems from a desire for results at a fraction

The condition manifests as pauses in breathing while sleeping. Once your brain registers elevated levels of carbon dioxide, you wake up, often with a start, and breathe normally. This can happen hundreds of times without you even realizing it. You wake up poorly rested,
