PCG Launches ‘PCG Cares Initiative’ To Help Needy At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, food banks, shelters and other service orga- nizations contacted the President Container Group (PCG) requesting corrugated contain- ers for people in need to carry meals and store belongings. In response, PCG donat- ed 20,000 containers “without a question asked,” said company Vice President Larry Grossbard. The giving did not stop there. Out of that need, the company has created the “PCG Cares Initiative” to continue helping wherev- er high-quality, clean and reliable corrugat- ed containers are needed. With its offices in Moonachie, New Jersey and its manufactur- ing center in Middletown, New York, the com- pany will help communities in both states with its contributions of packaging, building part- nerships such as the one it enjoys with the Center for Food Action in New Jersey. “Our goal is to help each other, one box at a time,” Grossbard said. “We are all responsi- ble for doing our part to serve the communi- ties around us. As the former head of the PPEC, Mullinder had for three decades led the orga- nization that has grown to represent over 90 percent
of the Canadian paper packaging industry on environmental issues. The council was founded by packaging mills and converters back in 1990, allowing the group to work together and speak with one voice rather than several. 40 ft of paper travel from preheater to hot plates 3 seconds of heat, glue and bonding 1 chance to get it right! the ZONE
Design & Production
Chicago Electric offers 10 technology solutions to control ‘the Zone’ CORRUGATOR Sectoral preheating plate
Our sectoral preheating plates provide direct heat by means of a double steam circuit, allowing for efficient heating in hard-to-access locations, as well as to act as a steam shower to open the paper’s fibre, making it receptive to absorbing the heat and the glue.
This translates into increased speed and improved quality of the cardboard sheet finish.
The system’s main advantages are as follows:
• The plate may only be used to heat, only to humidify, or both options at the same time. • The plate is sectored, which allows for applying humidity to the sections. • It provides temperature in previously inaccessible locations and near the location needed. • It compensates the loss of temperature dissipated due to distance, speed or limitations of the exiting preheaters. • Quick transferring of heat to the paper. • The combination of the hot plate and steam shower allows for providing heat even to the hardest papers to heat. • Does not dry out the paper. • Possibility of operating as a humidifier and pre-conditioner. • Maintains and improves the fibre’s elasticity. • Acts according to the operator’s needs. • Facilitates the paper’s hygroscopy to absorb the glue and improve rubberising.

calibrations and settings. Bar systems avoid this, but compensate this with the risk of exces- sive glue application. The system contains many wearing parts. Solution The contact roll combines the ad antage of both systems and ensures minimum contact between board and applicator roll. The system uses small pneumatic cylinders in order to achieve a “soft touch.”

Roller Shoe Press When it comes to a short-term increas of web tension, spring loaded systems with shoes or airpressure activated system have problems in compensating these. The system is lifted for a short time. This may result in de-lamination and in the ‘double kiss’ effect. Solution For a defined and exact bonding point of the web fiv weight rollers will be installed usually over the first flat hotplate of the heating section. The rolls are mounted into a frame, which is actuated by means of two pneumatic cylinders. P oductivity Issu —Double Kiss Bonding

BillerudKorsnas plans to convert Verso’s largest facility, its Escanaba, Michigan, mill, into a world-class, sustainable, fully integrated paperboard production site. One machine is expected to be converted by 2025 and a second machine by 2029, with a total capacity of about 1.2 million tons. The Swedish company estimates it will invest up to about $1 billion in the conversion. BillerudKorsnas plans to continue operating the Quinnesec, Michigan, mill, pictured above, a graphic paper manufacturer of coated freesheet and specialty papers. The Quinnesec mill has the capacity to produce about 430,000 tons of graphic and specialty papers and 240,000 tons of market pulp per year. The acquisition of Verso is in line with BillerudKorsnas’ strategy to drive profitable growth in paperboard and the ambition to expand into North America. BillerudKorsnas is committed to continuing to serve Verso’s ex- isting customers. The offer at $27 per share is about $35 more than what Verso’s shares were worth Friday, the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune reported. In a news re- lease, Verso’s president and CEO, Randy Nebel, said the committee care- fully negotiated the agreement with BillerudKorsnas, and Verso’s board members believe the transaction “maximizes value for shareholders.” “We are excited to join forces with BillerudKorsnas and benefit from enhanced opportunities as part of a larger, stronger organization,” Nebel said. BillerudKorsnas was founded in 2012 and operates seven production units in Sweden and Finland with about 4,400 employees across more An view of Verso Corp.’s pulp and paper mill in Quinnesec, Michigan, which will be acquired by BillerudKorsnas AB

Green Bay Packaging Attains Green Master Status For 12th Straight Year The Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council (WSBC) has named Green Bay Packaging a Green Master within its Green Masters Program. Recognizing sustainable ac- tions by businesses from across the state of Wisconsin, the Green Masters program works to identify businesses that have taken at least one action within each of the nine pillars of sustainability. Participants in the program receive recognition for their sustainability accomplishments and develop ideas for future sustainability actions. In 2021, Green Bay Packaging began operation of a new $500 million state-of-the-art paper mill with first-in-in- dustry energy-saving technologies that reduce green- house gas emissions per ton paper production and zero direct discharge of water to the Fox River. The project is
the first of its size in Wisconsin to reclaim treated water from an adjoining sewerage district. “This world-class mill design provides ‘sustainable product innovation’ on a holistic scale by doubling the
facility’s capacity for paper recycling, reclaim- ing and recycling water in a circular system to reduce impacts to local water sources, utiliz- ing energy efficiencies to reduce greenhouse gases, implementing process efficiencies that reduce waste generation, and using mixed paper material input for an increased circular fiber economy that diverts more office paper from landfills,” said Corporate Environment and Sustainability Director, Lisa Bauer-Lotto. Green Bay Packaging strives for achieve- ments and continuous improvement in sus- tainability programs to advance sustainability stewardship within its operations and value chain. Since inception and as a pilot compa- ny of the Green Masters Program, Green Bay Packaging has implemented systems in core sustainability areas to accomplish awareness, key performance indicator transparency, and improvements across our company. The Green Masters Program is an objec- tive, points-based recognition, assessment, and certification program that enables Wiscon- sin businesses of all sizes and from any sec- tor to join a group of like-minded companies working towards sustainability. The program has established three levels of participation: “Green Apprentice,” “Green Professional,” and “Green Master.” Green Bay Packaging joined the program as a Green Master in 2010. Each year at the Wisconsin Sustainable Busi- ness Council Conference, the current top 20 percent of companies that applied during the calendar year are identified and recognized as the Green Masters level companies. Green Bay Packaging was recognized by the Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council for the twelfth consecutive year in 2021. This

award emphasizes its dedication to sustainability initia- tives and achievements throughout our operations while pursuing business excellence. “The Green Masters Program is a tool for businesses to assess and grow their sustainability programs, to bench- mark against their industry and to receive a third part cer- tification recognizing their achievements in sustainability,” says WSBC’s managing director, Jessy Servi Ortiz. Established in 1933, Green Bay Packaging Inc. is a fam- ily-owned company consisting of corrugated container plants, a folding carton facility, recycled and virgin liner- board mills, pressure-sensitive label roll stock plants, tim- berlands, specialty converting operations, and a sawmill facility. Rondo-Pak Joins In Salvation Army’s Annual Adopt-A-Family Program Camden, New Jersey based Rondo-Pak, LLC/Contempo- rary Graphic Solutions, a provider of printed components and quality folding cartons for the pharmaceutical, medi- cal device and consumer industries, again participated in the Salvation Army’s Annual Adopt-A-Family Program, this year at the Kroc Center in Camden. The program connects impoverished families with individual or group sponsors to provide their tangible needs during the holidays. Each year, in addition to providing printed materials to the Kroc Center, Rondo-Pak/CGS participates in several of the center’s programs to benefit the community. This holi- day season, the company had the honor of “adopting” two local families and all employees rallied together to fulfill their Christmas wish lists with items such as clothes, toi- letries, food, toys and crafts. Each family – with four and six individuals, respectively – received all items on their wish lists and more due to the generous contributions of company employees. The holiday gifts were delivered to the Kroc Center by several members of the Rondo-Pak/CGS team including CEO, Tim Moreton. “Each year, we look forward to uniting our team in this worthwhile cause, which aims to bring joy back to the hol- iday season for families in need,” said Moreton. “This year,
there were 77 total families adopted, which included 233 adults and children. We are delighted to have played a role in assisting the Salvation Army to serve such a large
number of deserving families in our wonderful community.” As a HUBZone company, Rondo-Pak/CGS has become an integral part of the Camden, New Jersey community. G-P Employees Deliver Toys To Boys & Girls Club In TX
Employees at Georgia-Pacific’s plant in Diboll, Texas, pro- vided an early Christmas to members of the local Boys & Girls Club. From basketballs and footballs to dolls and scooters, each club member walked away with a special Christmas surprise. “We were able to give each of our 60-plus club mem- bers a gift this year,” said Celesse Goeyns, Boys & Girls Club Unit Director. “The children were so surprised when they walked into the club and saw Santa surrounded by a ton of gifts. Just seeing the smiles and hearing the laugh- ter in the room was the best gift of all — and thanks to the generosity of Georgia-Pacific employees — children are truly experiencing the excitement of the season.” This is the first year Diboll Particleboard employees col- lected Christmas gifts for the Boys and Girls Club of Diboll.

FBA Celebrates Another Successful Year In 2021 BY DENNIS COLLEY
FBA Board and Executive Committee were very engaged in identifying strategic issues facing the industry and FBA’s role in addressing them. In the end, 2021 was one of FBA’s most productive years for delivering results and value to its members. Here are a few highlights: • Monthly production reports were successfully transi- tioned to Quarterly Statistical Reports and more than 120 data services reports were generated on produc- tion/consumption/inventory and benchmarking opera- tions. • FBA introduced members to the new Box Segment De- mand Indicators Reportwhich provides member com- panies with macroeconomic and market segment data in graphs with accompanying bullet point information. • A new Cybersecurity Committee was established with 19 members. The committee led two cybersecurity training sessions, conducted a cybersecurity spend survey, and hosted a variety of cyberse- curity speakers.
As 2021 comes to a close, I want to thank Fibre Box As- sociation (FBA) members for their continued support and
encouragement. Each year has its own set of challenges and 2021 was no different. This past year, the cor- rugated industry’s top five issues included Covid-19, plastics substitu- tions, cybersecurity, extended pro- ducer responsibility (EPR) and supply chain concerns. As an association,
FBA looked to its member-driven standing committees to act on these issues and others in the areas of technical, safety, health, the environment, and data services. The Dennis Colley

The pallet unitization research project exam- ined the impact of stacking patterns on top to bottom box compression (BCT). • A new edition of the Hazardous Mate- rials Packaging Training Program was developed for release in January 2022. The program trains corrugated industry Hazmat Employees with new training vid- eos, tests, and reference documents. • Customer (virtual) meetings were held with Amazon (2), Kroger (2), Walmart (2), Bolthouse Farms, Costco, IKEA, and Gen- eral Mills. • Data was collected for a new corrugated box Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). This fourth industry LCA is expected to be completed by December 2022. • Nine of 10 supplier partners renewed pledges for 2022-2024.Pledges support the Corrugated Industry Promotions Pro- gram extolling the benefits of corrugated packaging through advertising and social media. • In all, approximately 27 committee meet- ings were held. • 2021 financials were positive to budget. If additional information is needed on any of these topics, please reach out to me or the FBA team for assistance. On behalf of FBA’s staff, I wish everyone peace, joy and happiness during this holiday season. From my family to yours, Happy Holidays and Hap- py New Year!

dustry’s achievement of a number of North American and world firsts in waste reduction and recycling. He served on various national and provincial task forces, boards, com- mittees, and councils, and became a widely respected blogger on environmental issues. Mullinder succeeded in publishing a few short stories and a book of blogs on environmental policy and recycling issues, but it was the widespread ignorance, misinforma- tion and confusion being disseminated on social media led him to write his first book, “Deforestation in Canada and Other Fake News” in 2018. Indeed, in his career working on environmental policy issues, Mullinder discovered a wide-open field of opportu- nity for those inclined to, in his words, “mislead, obscure, exaggerate, spin, lie and plain old BS. And it’s not always the sales and marketing types, it’s the environmental groups and governments, as well.” Ground-Truthing In “Little Green Lies,” Mullinder assembled almost 40 unique entries, arranged alphabetically for ease of refer- ence. There is a section of “key terms.” There are ample charts, graphs, photos and illustrations for those of us who like to see words supported by pictures. Of the almost 40 entries, Mullinder has made his best effort to “ground- truth” every single one of them with information sources provided in the end notes and key sources in the back of the book.
visiting his uncle’s farm. That the young Mullinder was duped by an older and smarter sibling can be forgiven. He was, after all, only five. But John the adult admits to learn- ing more from that “innocent little chomp-down” than one might expect: “Be wary of the con man and the smooth talker. And check out the apple pie first.” Scholar, Author, Environmentalist It can also be suggested that “Little Green Lies” was the book Mullinder -- the scholar, the author and the en- vironmentalist -- was preparing to write all his life. He was born and educated in new Zealand and graduated with a Master of Arts (Honours) degree in English from the Uni- versity of Canterbury Christchurch. He trained briefly as a teacher before setting off to see the world, backpack- ing and adventuring through the South Pacific, California, Mexico, and Central and South America. Upon his return to New Zealand, John ventured into journalism, first becoming a reporter with South Pacific Television and then Television New Zealand as a research- er/reporter on one of the country’s leading current affairs programs. During this time, he freelanced for a variety of international magazines before emigrating to Canada in the mid-1980s. There he was asked to lead an environ- mental council for the country’s paper packaging indus- try: PPEC. He knew nothing about packaging issues but learned quickly, and over the years coordinated the in-

Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

tal claims being peddled by businesses, governments, and environmental groups today. The author doesnt pull his punches…the media’s lack of fact-checking is largely blamed for allowing so many ‘little green lies’ to prosper and spread. Urban myths are debunked, and you will nev- er look at forests, paper, recycling, or waste in exactly the same way again. You will also be better armed to analyze and challenge many of the false and misleading claims be- ing asserted in today’s so-called green marketplace.” AICC President Mike D’Angelo read the book and said: “This is a great read! Well organized, well documented, and well explained. I’m a 40-year veteran of the paper in- dustry and I learned a lot from this advanced reader copy. Mr. Mullinder calls out those with an agenda and sets the record straight regarding paper and the environment in an entertaining, reasonable, and inspiring way. Mark Twain is credited with writing that ‘a lie travels halfway around the world before the truth gets its shoes on.’ This book gives the truth a fighting chance.” My own review of “Little Green Lies” may have been too “descriptive” in its praise for Amazon to include in its entirety. The second paragraph in which I used the word “pornography” apparently deemed my review worthy of rejection. (I believe it was clearly taken out of context.) I resubmitted the first paragraph only and it was immedi- ately accepted, now waiting to be joined by readers of Board Converting News : I received and read a free ad-
