STA greets Archbishop

MAXIMUM POWERSPORTS $7 Archbishop Prendergast of Ottawa Diocese held mass at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Russell on May 7 as part of Catholic EducationWeek in Ontario. Father Paul Nwaeze welcomed the archbishop, along with other church members, teachers and students. Several students were involved in the service, which included a school choir, several readings by students, and blessings of the different aspects of school life. Students brought forward items like a football helmet to represent sports, a pencil sketch to represent art, science and math instruments, and others. Most of the school’s students and teachers attended, along with many parents. Prendergast was named as the ninth Archbishop of Ottawa by Pope Benedict XVI in 2007. Mass included a letter from Pope Benedict’s successor Pope Francis. Last fall, student trustees on the provincial Catholic Board Council passed amotion to ask Pope Francis for his support. TheVatican Secretary of State replied in a letter containing amessage from the Pope. Mass was celebrated at Catholic schools across Ontario on the same day.
