Diane Choinière seeks second term
BOURGET | Diane Choinière has decided to seek another term as councillor for the City of Clarence-Rockland’s Ward 8 in the fall civic election. The incumbent councillor will compete against challenger Serge Dicaire for ballots from the Bourget area in October. Choinière is one of three members of council facing a breach of trust charge related to a series of emails, most of them concerning then city administrator Daniel Gatien, that passed between them and local businessman and lawyer, Stéphane J. Lalonde following the November 2010 civic
election. Mayor Marcel Guibord and Coun. Guy Félio are also charged with breach of trust while Lalonde faces charges of both breach of trust and counseling breach of trust. The case at present was still in the pre- trial conference stage. But Choinière, during a daily newspaper interview, declared both her innocence in the case and also that the charge should not prevent her from doing her work as the Ward 8 representative. During the past three years of her term, Choinière has been working on the need for a sewage drainage system for the Bour-
get area. Another issue she has taken up concerns the preservation and restoration of the old Bourget rail station building. “It’s important that any new use of the old Bourget station meet the tourism, eco- nomic, and recreational needs of the local community,” Choinière stated during one public meeting on the subject, “while main- taining its heritage value.” Choinière has also taken a position on the ecoLarose project of the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) in the Larose Forest. The $12-million project would see a confe- rence centre and nature studies facility built
in the heart of the community forest which the UCPR manages in partnership with the South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC). Choinière favours future infrastructure planning for the village of Bourget itself to prepare for and take advantage of the po- tential increase in tourism traffic once eco- Larose is complete and in operation. She commented on the subject during a village planning session last October. “The ecoLarose centre is on the way to be- coming a reality,” she said. “It’s important for Bourget to be ready to welcome the poten- tial economic benefits.”
