Arena Sale/No Sale?
ROCKLAND | Is the Jean-Marc Lalonde Arena going up for sale or not? A resolution passed during the March 17 session for Clarence-Rockland council seems to indicate one thing while a notice posted on the city’s website says another. The resolution states that council’s admin- istration committee recommends council “to proceed with the sale of the building of the Jean-Marc Lalonde arena” and “to de- clare the lot located on Part of Lot 25 Con 1 OS Clarence surplus to requirements of the City of Clarence-Rockland” and also “to mandate the Director of Community Ser- vices to begin with two bidding processes: one for the services of a real estate apprais- al agency and one to begin the process of selling the Jean-Marc Lalonde Arena”with a note that “the funds received from the sale of the arena and the land to be put into a
reserve fund for the capital expenditures and replacement of the Clarence Creek and Clarence-Rockland municipal arenas.” The website notice states at the begin- ning that “It is premature to claim that the Jean-Marc Lalonde Arena is presently for sale.” In the second paragraph the notice states that council authorized by resolution for the community services director “to take the necessary steps for a possible sale.” The “necessary steps” include starting a tender process for a real estate assessment. “Of course, any decision will be ratified by Council at every stage of the process,”states the website notice. “Even if the City receives an offer, it must be accepted by Council. We are therefore not going to get rid of the arena in the near future.”
L’ORIGNAL | The court case against three members of Clarence-Rockland council continues shuffling through the court cal- endar. Another pre-trial conference took place March 18 behind closed doors at the pro- vincial courthouse in L’Orignal between the Crown prosecutor and defence counsels for Mayor Marcel Guibord, Councillors Di- ane Choinière and Guy Félio, and Clarence- Rockland lawyer and businessman Sté- phane J. Lalonde. Council court case continues All four are charged with breach of trust and Lalonde is also charged with counsel- ling breach of trust. The charges resulted from an OPP investigation of a series of email exchanges between the four follow- ing the 2010 civic election. Details of the conference are not avail- able but general practice is for Crown and defence lawyers to review and discuss any outstanding disclosure issues before the next stage in the court process. The pre-trial conference will continue during on April 1.
