You Can Have It If You Want It!

A MESSAGE FROM CEO FRANK VANDERSLOOT

A lot is being said these days about the fact that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. I think pretty much everyone would agree—that’s not a good thing! Nations in various societies have used various methodologies to address this very issue over the past century. Marxism, communism, and various forms of socialism have come up with programs that basically consist of taking assets from the rich and giving them to the poor. This process is called “redistributing the wealth.” This approach has never been successful. It might sound great to those who are poor, but throughout history such endeavours have failed miserably. Taking assets from the rich and giving those assets to the poor has always ended up in disaster—causing those societies who have tried it to spiral into various levels of nationwide poverty. At Melaleuca, we believe we have a better way—in fact a much more successful way—of solving the problem. We are indeed champions of the “little guy.” But we realize that just taking from the haves and giving it to the have-nots will never be successful because it rewards failure and penalizes success. It’s a universal principle that whatever you reward you will get more of, and what you penalize you will get less of. So rewarding failure and penalizing success only gets you more failure and less success. The Soviet Union, East Germany, communist China, and Cuba are economies that tried various forms of socialism and ended up in dismal failures. So we are not advocates of taking from the rich and giving to the poor. But we are advocates of a much better and much more successful endeavour. We believe the answer lies not in redistributing wealth, but in redistributing opportunity. In other words, we know that simply taking assets from the wealthy and giving to the poor will always end in failure, so we simply propose levelling out the playing field by giving the poor a much bigger opportunity. Clearly, in all societies, the wealthy have much more opportunity than the poor. And they capitalize on those opportunities which create more wealth for them. So Melaleuca is engaged in redistributing the opportunity for wealth—making it possible for average Americans and Canadians to

month after month, year after year. Everyone who wants it and who is willing to work for it can experience success with Melaleuca. Everyone works at their own pace. I have seen Marketing Executives go from enrolment to Executive Director in just a few months while others have taken 10 years. I tend to celebrate the success of the 10-year consistent climb more than the almost instant success because I value persistence over skill and because those who take longer usually have a more solid business. Some might take 20 or 30 years to become Executive Directors. And when they make it we have a major celebration! Persistence and never giving up even when you fall down or when someone is moving faster than you is a quality that we all should admire. Some people may move faster than you, but their success will only feed your success. If you are a Melaleuca Marketing Executive, you don’t have to wait for a raise or a promotion to get ahead in life. You can give yourself a raise by enroling a dozen new Preferred Customers. Or you can give yourself a promotion by advancing to the next status. You don’t have to wait for permission to do it. You don’t have to wait to be chosen or for someone else’s approval. You don’t have to wait to be designated or directed. And you don’t have to wait for the government to fix your problem (which wouldn’t work anyway)! You can just go do it! The opportunity is yours! Take it! Don’t let anyone put you down because of your education or because of your lack of experience or because they think someone else is better. With Melaleuca, you and only you are in charge of your future. If you have dreams and goals, get to work and make them happen! The key, of course, is to stop dreaming and get to work. It takes hard, consistent work and sometimes courage. And most of all it takes persistence—week after week, month after month. You have the opportunity and all the tools for success. I am not saying it will be easy. I’m just saying you can have it if you want it.

compete successfully with corporate conglomerates like Procter & Gamble, Lever Brothers, and Johnson & Johnson. Actually, we not only make it possible to compete—but to win. It would take an investment of millions of dollars to set up a company to compete with these corporate giants. And even then, success would not be assured. So Melaleuca has made a substantial investment to allow the “little guy” to compete against the big boys— and win! We have developed superior products. We have built the factories. We have built the worldwide network of computer programs. We have established the distribution methodology. We have taken care of the legalities, the taxes, the payroll systems, the regulations, the registrations, the marketing literature, the science, the computer programming, and all of the red tape. We have built the office buildings, the factories, and the distribution centers. And we have partnered with hundreds of thousands of “little guys,” allowing them to use all of the assets listed above as if they were their own and in effect set them up in business to use those hundreds of millions of dollars of assets for free and therefore be set up in business to compete against the corporate mammoths. This endeavour has been very successful indeed! For the first time in the last half a century, the established corporate chains are starting to lose market share to the “little guys.” Tens of thousands of households switch from grocery store brands to Melaleuca every month. And our people prosper! These people prosper because of their own hard work and tenacity. They have worked hard at introducing Melaleuca products to people they know and care about. They prosper because they are loyal to each other, to the concept of enhancing lives, and to taking care of the world we live in. They prosper because they have been willing to step out of their comfort zone into a world of helping others achieve their goals. These are the unfailing universal principles of successful people. These people have always had the potential to implement these principles. They just have never had the opportunity to do so. No one should ever say that success with Melaleuca comes “easy.” I certainly would not say that. Success with Melaleuca takes work—a lot of work! But success with Melaleuca is almost guaranteed to anyone and everyone who is willing to learn how to build a business and who has the courage and fortitude to follow through

Sincerely,

@FLVanderSloot

Harnessing the Power of Healthy Habits

With every passing year, I become more aware of the importance of making healthy choices in life. And that’s often easier said than done. I recently visited the Mayo Clinic’s health assessment program in Rochester, Minnesota, to get my scorecard for my health and wellness markers. Through the process, I learned some valuable lessons about how our choices and habits create our reality.

DARRIN JOHNSON , Senior VP of Sales

When I first met with my physician, he said, “The goal isn’t to reverse the first 51 years. The goal is to help your next 50 years be as active and vibrant as possible.” We can learn something from that liberating philosophy. It’s okay to start where you are. Leave the past behind. Today is a new day that will be shaped by your choices and attitude starting now. Focus forward on how you can improve instead of worrying about the past.

8 SEPTEMBER 2018 | MELALEUCA.COM

As you strive to reach your wellness goals, it’s vital that you hold yourself accountable for making healthy choices. One way to do so is through an effective tracking method. Research shows people who track their daily activities are more successful at reaching their goals than those who don’t, whether they’re tracking what they eat, how many steps they take, how many names they add to their contact list, or how many calls they make each day to schedule a Melaleuca Overview. Tracking reveals the blind spots in your daily habits that are sabotaging your efforts to reach your goals. For example, I love peanut butter M&Ms. During the day, I used to eat a few fun-size packages without even thinking about it. It wasn’t until I started tracking my eating using an app that I realized I was consuming about ¾ of a cup of peanut butter M&Ms every day. While that may not sound like a lot, this resulted in over 700 calories per day! And these calories were empty calories with zero nutritional value.

Do I still eat M&Ms? YES. But I consume less, and I now have the self-awareness that choosing to have a fun-size M&Ms package has implications for other decisions I make during the day. Where are your blind spots? If you want to increase your accountability and self-awareness toward your health and wellness goals, try experimenting with various trackers and see what works for you. Using a journal is an inexpensive and fun way to track your activities. You can also explore digital trackers and apps to help you track your food and exercise.

minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise. Thirty minutes a day, five times a week is an easy goal to remember. You will also experience benefits even if you divide your time into two or three segments of 10–15 minutes per day. How much do you exercise? Have you fallen into the trap that you don’t have the time, money, or equipment to get in a good workout? Over the next 30 days, experiment with identifying the many ways you can exercise more by just changing your habits—and remember to track! Second, you can’t outrun poor nutrition. Ever wonder why exercising more doesn’t produce the results you desire? Are you frustrated you’re not losing the weight or reaching the body fat goal you set for yourself? Do you want your clothes to fit better? Shift your focus to what you’re putting into your body and track it. You’ll quickly see where you can improve. It doesn’t matter how much you exercise; you cannot offset the impact poor nutrition has on your body. Over a lifetime, the result of poor nutrition can be obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and other issues. Want to know where to start? Cut out all sugary soft drinks and energy drinks and replace them with SplasH 2 O® or Sustain® Sport .

During my Mayo visit, I met with a cardiologist who reviewed my blood work and stress test results. She asked probing questions about my nutrition and exercise habits. From her, I learned two valuable lessons. First, when it comes to exercising consistently there are no excuses—only choices. We all have the time and the resources. I tried to tell this doctor how difficult it is to exercise when traveling on business. She politely and firmly reminded me that if my hotel room has a 4x4 floor space then I can do burpees and pushups. If the hotel has a stairwell, I can climb steps in the early morning. If I have a chair, I can do tricep pushups or inclined pushups. Her point? Stop with the excuses already. Make it a priority and do it. Being physically active is important to preventing heart disease and stroke, two of the nation’s leading causes of death! To improve overall cardiovascular health, the American Heart Association recommends at least 150

There are five baby grand pianos spread throughout

the Mayo Clinic campus that patients and family are invited to play. During my visit, I listened to a young man play hymns and classics for over an hour. It was inspiring to watch how the simple act of sharing his talents touched others. Sharing our talents, enhancing others’ lives, and practising gratitude are key habits for any successful life. For the next few days, practise starting and ending each day with two questions: 1. What am I grateful for today? 2. Who will I help today?

I think you’ll find that answering these questions consistently will help you feel empowered to reach your goals. It will give you greater belief in yourself and your abilities, and it will add meaning and purpose to your life.

When you start consistently making and practising changes in your life, you’ll start noticing a difference in how you feel, look, and think. Celebrate these changes. Celebrate when you track your calories for three consecutive days or when you exercise for five days in a row. Celebrate when you add five names to your contact list every day for a week or make at least 20 weekly calls. You’ll find the simple act of breaking your goal into smaller chunks and focusing on the day-to-day actions will help you reach larger goals faster and more frequently. Want to try a fun experiment? Consider what specific and realistic goal you want to reach over the next six months, whether in health or business. Develop a game plan to make it happen, and take action. Then enjoy what you learn and how you grow in the process!

“Melaleuca changed our lives. We are now healthier, have more energy and are in a better financial position’’

JANET & VAEA LANG-SIU

J anet & Vaea Lang-Siu qualified to attend an all- expenses paid Road to Senior Director training event at Kingscliff in July. At the conclusion of the event, Directors 8 Janet & Vaea were determined to cross the line and achieve Senior Director. They realised this is the first step towards financial freedom and a means to achieve their personal goals while helping others. As parents of seven, ages between 4 and 26 (Fred, Janet, Candyce, Monson, Faith, Charity, and Mariah) plus five beautiful grand kids, they work really hard to get ahead in life. The Lang-Sius own and manage a take away/catering business which consumes the majority of their time, with Vaea also running the fleet of their delivery trucks. Almost half of their revenue goes into his drivers and the rest for fuel, insurance and other overheads. Vaea tends to drive the trucks himself to avoid paying wages. When Vaea drives, he is out on the road usually from 4am to 6pm. Running a brick-and-mortar businesses is not easy. It is a lot of stress, a lot of pressure and time involved. MELALEUCA'S NEWEST SENIOR DIRECTORS

LEAD WITH PRODUCTS - One night, Janet’s mother brought home a few Melaleuca cleaning products to use in their commercial kitchen. The kitchen looked sparkling clean but did not smell like chemicals, Janet & Vaea were both amazed that this was possible. They were convinced Melaleuca’s cleaning products were superior to market brands. This led to a meeting with their enrolers Barbara & Tua Tofilau. Vaea says that Melaleuca has completely transformed their lives. “Before we turned to Melaleuca, my wife, Janet was really sick because of all the chemicals we used daily to clean the commercial kitchen, ovens and grills. Janet used to spray chemicals on the grill, go out for 15 minutes and then come back to clean. As soon as we changed to Melaleuca’s super concentrated products with no chlorine bleach, ammonia, phosphates or formaldehydes – we saw a progressive change in Janet, which was no coincidence”. One would think that the Lang-Sius’ favourite product range is Eco-sense. However when asked the question, both were quick to say their favourite range is Vitality for Life. Vaea says he never took supplements before, but has since decided to make a change in his life to be healthier and more active. When asked which supplements Vaea takes now, Janet jokingly says that Vaea takes all of our Vitality range with the exception of Vitality for Women.

12 SEPTEMBER 2018 | MELALEUCA.COM

“I can’t live without Melaleuca’s Vitality for Life products. I fell in love with this range. It changed my energy and health. I feel great, I feel strong’’.

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY - The Lang-Sius are great advocates of Melaleuca’s product portfolio. They saw a business opportunity in Melaleuca after realising how Melaleuca’s products compare to what is available in the market. It was easy for them to share their experiences with products and help their friends and family build a business to last a lifetime. Melaleuca’s business opportunity comes at no risk. Vaea tells us they paid thousands of dollars to start their take away/catering business, but with Melaleuca, all they had to do was to convert their home with Melaleuca’s products and start sharing what they have done. There have been no risks, no selling, no stocking products, no billing. They wanted to get ahead in life, which is why they started sharing Melaleuca with others. Today, they have over 450 families in their organisation who shop Melaleuca’s products every month. Although debt was controlling their lives, Melaleuca is a great way to get ahead, with their main concern being time freedom. Janet continues to paint a picture of Vaea pushing trolleys, driving trucks 14 hours a day and Janet using harsh chemicals for cleaning every day, had they not found Melaleuca. Just like a traditional business, building a Melaleuca business is hard work and requires a great deal of commitment but with no risk, no overheads, and no investment. THEIR GOALS - Vaea tells us that all he wants is a good future for their kids and grandkids. He wants to provide what they need for their lives and focus on their own lives with their kids. Janet wants to do as much as she can to build a foundation and legacy for them. Their children always complain that they are always busy and involved with the businesses. Vaea says that is the cost of a traditional business, but hopes things will turn as they build a successful Melaleuca business.

L-R: Peter Lamb (General Manager), Vaea & Janet Lang-Siu, Kevin Procter (Director of Sales)

“We have asked our kids to be patient for a little longer as we spend most of our time on growing our Melaleuca business while sharing the benefits of our amazing products’’. True income is not consistent with their traditional businesses. Now, they have a consistent residual income from Melaleuca’s compensation plan, and they progressively increase this income each month. “We are sharing what is proven to be effective and some of the best products in the market, and referring our friends, family and everyone we meet to join this great company to benefit from the products. While we all improve our health and well-being, there is a great opportunity for a supplementary income as well. What an awesome concept’’. Janet & Vaea have earned just over $51,392 over the last 8 months, and while they have used some of this to pay outstanding bills, everything else has gone towards their mortgage. They want to pay off their mortgage as soon as possible to realise their dream to retire from both brick-and-mortar businesses they have and do what they love and enjoy. That is to share the exceptional range of Melaleuca’s products along with the unique business opportunity . “I have seen people in my team succeed and I love that feeling. I love the feeling of being able to hear from our customers that their health has improved after trying Melaleuca’s Vitality range. Everyone in Australia needs to see what our products are capable of achieving. We have seen it, and our families have too”. In response to whether or not they have achieved their Melaleuca business goals by being a Senior Director, Vaea smiles and explains, “This is the first of many milestones we want to achieve’’.

CRITICAL BUSINESS-BUILDING ACTIVITIES

If you want to achieve your goals with Melaleuca, you need to focus on and repeatedly do these seven activities day after day and week after week.

1

Build Your Contact List

2

Set Appointments

I want you to notice something about the Seven Critical Activities, the first four in particular. You cannot do Critical Activity 3, Share Overviews, before you do Critical Activity 2 or Critical Activity 1. That’s not how it works. These activities are in this order because that’s the order you’ll need to do them in. Before you can hold a Strategy Session, you need to present Melaleuca: An Overview and enrol a customer. And before you can do that, you’ll need to invite someone you know to your Overview. There’s a reason the first Critical Activity is not Set Appointments. Before you invite someone to your Overview, you should already have a relationship. The first thing to do is add their name to your contact list and begin establishing a relationship. When the time is right, you can invite them to attend a Melaleuca Overview and make a decision about Melaleuca. We are a “warm market” company. The right way to build your business is with people who know you, like you, and trust you. So before you approach someone to set an appointment, take the time to build a genuine relationship with them. As you help them reach their goals, you’ll find that those personal relationships can be just as rewarding—if not more so—as your income from your Melaleuca business.

3

SEPTEMBER 2018 | MELALEUCA.COM

Our family’s arrival here in Australia has been very much a learning experience, and I fully anticipate that our learning will continue on for years to come. We are enjoying adapting to different phrases, names, sports, and ways of looking at life. Among the more subtle differences that we have identified is a tendency among Australians and New Zealanders to finish their sentences with an upward, or rising inflection of the voice, in situations where Americans might typically have a steady or downward inflection. While the reason for or meaning behind this vocal intonation may well be debated, I have chosen to draw my own conclusion: the people of Australia and New Zealand are inherently happy and optimistic in nature. In like manner, I have a very happy and optimistic outlook on the present and future state of Melaleuca in Australia and New Zealand, and I will share three reasons to support this opinion. First, and most importantly, Melaleuca offers a product portfolio which is unmatched in our market. With over 30 years of experience in combining the best of science and nature, we can all now benefit daily from using such a wide range of fantastic products. These products are not luxury items to be slowly consumed over a period of years, nor are they experimental in nature and intended for a targeted or fringe audience. Instead, Melaleuca produces highly consumable, healthy alternatives to products that are routinely used in virtually every home across the globe. It is thrilling to consider the thousands of customers here in Australia and New Zealand who have shopped at Melaleuca for many years in a row, and in numerous cases for over a decade. I take great confidence and reassurance in knowing that a highly skilled research and development team at Melaleuca will continue to produce an ever-improving line-up of products suitable to customers of all ages and life situations. Second, I can state with great confidence that Melaleuca is guided by the best management team a company could hope to have. Through my own personal experiences and time spent with the very accomplished and capable heads of Marketing, Sales, Legal, Finance, Operations, and R&D, I have come to know and trust the decision-making process used within the organization. It is reassuring to know that each functional unit in Melaleuca operates with the sole objective of enhancing lives through the creation and delivery of its great products all over the world. A Rising Inflection

Finally, as important as this leadership is to the internal functioning of Melaleuca, it is the vast and dedicated group of Marketing Executives that allows for Melaleuca to grow and thrive. We are so fortunate to have many hundreds of capable, educated, and motivated leaders representing Melaleuca across Australia and New Zealand. Just as thrilling as this opportunity to associate with such great brand ambassadors, however, is the realisation that we have only just begun to scratch the surface of what is possible here. I have no doubt that some of Melaleuca’s greatest advocates and leaders have yet to even be introduced to the company and our wonderful products. These are capable and motivated individuals just like yourselves who simply have not yet discovered what is possible through the Melaleuca product portfolio and compensation plan. I challenge you to find them and discover how their lives can be enhanced through a life-long association with Melaleuca. We live in such a great time and place. The combination of products, leadership, and incredible Marketing Executives offer us every reason to believe that we are witnessing a rising inflection point for Melaleuca throughout Australia, New Zealand, and countries around the world.

NEW STUDY LINKS LUNG DAMAGE TO DANGEROUS CLEANING PRODUCTS

A new, independent study based on 20 years of research reveals that cleaning your home with dangerous chemical cleaning compounds can damage lung tissue. The study showed that cleaning with such products as little as once per week could be as damaging over time to respiratory health as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years! 1

18 SEPTEMBER 2018 | MELALEUCA.COM

ABOUT THE STUDY Starting in the 1990s, an international independent study began tracking a large population of 6,235 women and men with a beginning average age of 34 at 22 health centres in multiple countries. Over the next 20 years, participants were quizzed about their use of both spray and other cleaning products and had their lung capacity tested regularly. Lung capacity was measured by breathing into a spirometer, an instrument that measures how much air you can exhale. Those with compromised lung function are not able to exhale as much volume as someone who is healthy. Of the participants, 53% were women and 44% were lifelong nonsmokers. Analysis was adjusted for smokers and those with doctor-diagnosed asthma. Participant data was extensive, ensuring that each subject was well characterised, significantly reducing the likelihood of misrepresentation. After twenty years of data had been collected, the results were compiled and analysed by a team of 28 international researchers from nine countries, led by scientists at The University of Bergen in Norway. The study was recently published in the American Thoracic Society’s American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

FINDING 1:

Weekly cleaning may be as damaging to lung health as smoking 20 cigarettes per day for 20 years.

By now, just about everyone knows the dangers of smoking cigarettes. Among their many hazards is depleted lung capacity—the result of damage to the tender internal tissues of the respiratory system. Lung capacity is important because it is a marker of overall health and fitness. The body depends on the lungs’ life-giving ability to oxygenate blood and expel carbon dioxide—the waste product of metabolism. Decreased lung capacity can lead to obvious declines in fitness, but since the body is so dependent on oxygen exchange, whole systems of the body can be compromised when the lungs become even partially debilitated. The study concluded that women who used home cleaning products at least once per week saw a similar reduction in lung capacity as those who smoked a pack a day over the same period. According to the authors, “Women cleaning at home or working as occupational cleaners had accelerated decline in lung function, suggesting that exposures related to cleaning activities may constitute a risk to long-term respiratory health.”

19

SEPTEMBER 2018 | MELALEUCA.COM

FINDING 3:

Cleaning at home can be just as harmful as being an occupational cleaner.

The ECRHS III survey categorised participants as “not cleaning,” “cleaning at home,” and “occupational cleaning.” While the “not cleaning” subset of women saw only expected, age-related change in lung capacity, the “cleaning at home” group saw the same decreases in lung health as “occupational cleaning.” How could this be the case when cleaning professionals are using cleaning products on a daily, ongoing basis, versus someone performing chores less frequently in their own home? First, consider that occupational cleaners are most often required to use protective gloves, clothing, and even masks while performing their duties. Those at home casually disregard warning labels and use cleaning products without adequate protection. Additionally, professional cleaners move from room to room, working in larger spaces with better ventilation than someone at home.

FINDING 2:

Women are affected far more than men.

Though there was a clear correlation between women who cleaned and respiratory illness, there was no similar correlation for men. While the scientists pointed out that the total number of men regularly using household cleaning products was significantly lower than women, the study summary also points out previous research that elaborates on the increased sensitivity of the female respiratory system. While not completely unaffected, male lungs have been proven to endure greater exposure to environmental pollutants—including cigarette smoke and wood dust— before experiencing a similar drop in lung capacity. 2,3,4

FINDING 4:

Non-spray cleaners may be as dangerous as sprays.

Study researchers originally suspected that products delivered through a spray or mist would prove more dangerous than those applied as a liquid, gel, or wipe. Surprisingly, the study found no significant difference between cleaner delivery types. The implication is that the chemicals in liquid cleaners become just as available for inhalation through evaporation as those used in sprays.

This finding is particularly concerning considering women engage with cleaning products more frequently than men.

FINDING 5:

Damage is cumulative over time.

The study hypothesised that the primary ingredients causing the harm may be ammonia, chlorine bleach, and quaternary disinfectant compounds. The researchers stated, “one could hypothesise that long-term exposure to airway irritants such as ammonia and bleach used when cleaning at home could cause fibrotic or other interstitial changes in the lung tissue, thereby leading to accelerated decline of FVC [forced vital capacity].”

When dangerous chemicals are regularly inhaled into the sensitive tissues of the lungs, it makes sense that the long- term consequence would be serious respiratory problems. “Exposure to cleaning chemicals,” the researchers wrote, “could result in accelerated lung function decline and chronic airway obstruction; low-grade inflammation over many years could possibly lead to persistent damage to the airways, alternatively, persistent damage could result from continued exposure after onset of cleaning-related asthma.” They added that it is already well documented that, “airway irritants such as ammonia and bleach” cause “fibrotic” changes to the delicate lung tissue, essentially scarring the lungs. Simply stated, regular exposure to the toxins within the home never allows the respiratory system an opportunity to heal, creating a condition where internal damage accumulates. Dr. Cecilie Svanes, a professor at the University of Bergen and senior author of the study, said, “We feared that such chemicals, by steadily causing a little damage to the airways day after day, year after year, might accelerate the rate of lung function decline that occurs with age.”

FINDING 6:

Women who regularly use cleaning products have increased rates of asthma.

Researchers found increased rates of asthma within the groups who used cleaning products regularly. This echoes multiple recent studies that have clearly linked the use of dangerous chemical cleaning agents with the onset of asthma.

THE INTRICATE INTERLACING OF YOUR LUNGS

Like all systems in your body, the respiratory system is miraculous in its design and function. Each breath draws in essential oxygen from the surrounding atmosphere and pulls it deep into your lung tissue. Here, large passageways branch into increasingly smaller and more intricate structures. Eventually, air is funneled into microscopic channels ending in specialised alveolar sacs that are surrounded by a complex network of interlaced capillaries. The surface of these little spherical bellows is where gas exchange takes place. The average human has about 700 million of these sacs, but due to their size, they can be easily and irreversibly damaged if exposed to the wrong elements.

for Better Lung Health

Take a deep breath. In. And out. In. And out. That simplest of actions is the essence of life.

You are completely dependent on your body’s ability to draw in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide to go on living. Each breath draws in essential oxygen from the surrounding atmosphere and pulls it deep into your lung tissue. Large passageways branch into increasingly smaller and more intricate structures. Eventually, air is funneled into microscopic channels ending in specialised alveolar sacs that are surrounded by a complex network of interlaced capillaries. The surface of these little spherical bellows is where gas exchange takes place. The average human has about 700 million of these sacs that do this miraculous work. And yet, you probably never think about breathing.

Why? Because it’s automatic. Your pulmonary system is receiving instructions from a part of your brain that isn’t fully connected to conscious thought. And thank heavens! Who wants to remember to breathe when there are so many other things to think about? Or who could sleep if breathing were a conscious act? Just because breathing is automatic doesn’t mean it should be forgotten. Healthy lungs lead to a long and healthy life. So while you probably know a thing or two about keeping your heart healthy, many of us have little idea how to keep our lungs in top shape. Well, here are a few tips and tricks for everyone.

DON’T SMOKE By now, just about everyone knows the dangers of cigarette smoke. It increases risk for lung cancer and other diseases by destroying lung tissue and introducing free radicals that can cause cell mutation. It constricts air passages and severely reduces lung capacity. It also creates a state of chronic inflammation within the lungs and throughout the body. If you do smoke, quitting isn’t easy, but the benefits are immense. Set a goal. Find an accountability partner. It’s never too late.

GET ACTIVE When you are at rest, your lungs are only functioning at about 50% capacity. Aerobic exercise like running, cycling, swimming, or interval training pushes your lungs to peak capacity and strengthens your diaphragm (the muscle responsible for drawing and releasing breath). Doctors also state that more intense activity helps counteract the buildup of pollutants, allergens, and dust in the lungs, helping them to cleanse themselves. So get up, get out, and get breathing hard—several times a week.

AVOID POLLUTION The tiny tissues deep in the cavities of your lungs are actually quite delicate and vulnerable to damage if exposed to pollution and chemicals over an extended period of time. Avoid secondhand smoke, outdoor air pollution, and harmful chemicals at home and work.

BREATHE DEEPLY Focused, deliberate breathing while at rest also benefits your lungs by expanding them to near full capacity. Mindful breathing starts with slowly inhaling through the nose, lifting your chest, and opening your ribcage. Then exhale completely through the mouth, relaxing the chest, and pushing out as much air as possible. Good posture and reducing total sitting time also assist with better breathing form.

PREVENT INFECTION According to the American Lung Association, colds and other respiratory infections can sometimes become serious. Here are some commonsense measures you can take that will benefit your lungs: • Wash your hands often with soap and water • Use a hand sanitiser like Melaleuca’s Clear Defence® when you don’t have access to running water • Minimise interactions with large groups during cold and flu season • Keep up on your dental hygiene, including brushing, flossing, and rinsing • Give your immune system a fighting chance by providing your body with the essential nutrition it needs for complete health; this includes a healthy diet with the help of Melaleuca’s supplementation such as the Peak Performance Nutrition Pack Breathing can be easy. Especially with a little education and diligence. Don’t take your lungs for granted. Give them the care they deserve and they will serve you well your whole life long. DC • See your doctor regularly

ELIMINATE CLEANERS WITH DANGEROUS CHEMICAL FROM YOUR HOME The 20-year independent study found that using chemical cleaning compounds as little as once a week can be as damaging to lungs as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years. Researchers are learning that the damage can be extremely serious, even permanent.

Executive Director 4 Dr. Barbara Ryan Emphasizes Magnitude of Recent Independent, International Lung-Damage Study at Convention 2018

At Melaleuca Convention 2018 in May, Dr. Barbara Ryan addressed the General Session audience on the topic of the independent lung-damage study. The study was compiled and analysed by a top team of 28 researchers from nine countries led by scientists at The University of Bergen in Norway. In March 2018, the study was published in the peer-reviewed American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and it generated global media attention. Dr. Ryan, a surgeon who received her MD from the Mayo Clinic, put the study in perspective. “This study actually showed that women who clean their homes as little as once per week—and maybe even just a portion of their homes—are having their lungs damaged. Damage that is equivalent to smoking a pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years!” She went on to explain the significance of this statement. “The independent study was huge. It was 20 years in length, it looked at more than 6,200 people, and found that cleaning with dangerous chemicals may be as damaging to lung capacity as smoking.” For perspective, she explained that “clinical studies are typically 10, 20, 40, maybe 50 participants over weeks to a few months, analysed, and then the study is published—and not always in a peer-reviewed journal.” She added, “If you can wrap your head around that and know what you

MONITORRADON Radon is a gas naturally found in some rock and soil. If a home is built on top of an area with radon, it can leak into a home through basement floors or foundations. Trapped inside, it can build up to unhealthy levels. Radon cannot be seen or smelled, and yet because it becomes radioactive as it decays, exposure to high levels can cause lung cancer. In fact, behind smoking, it is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. To detect radon in your home, use a radon test kit.

have access to, that will really empower you.” Dr. Ryan said it was important that the study was not performed by Melaleuca. “Understand that it’s an independent study. The fact that it is an independent study just reinforces what Melaleuca has been doing with the EcoSense line over the past three decades. What I appreciate about Melaleuca is my ability to provide safer options for families and children and individuals, and really help them have safer products and become healthier in their homes.”

ROAD TO SENIOR DIRECTOR What a magnificent setting for our Road to Senior Director event held on 6 & 7 July, 2018. The picturesque Mantra on Salt Beach resort proved the perfect backdrop for some inspirational storytelling, productive learning and most importantly, the new found Melaleuca friendships amongst Marketing Executives. This is the most effective training event when it comes to transforming Directors 3s into Senior Directors. We make a real effort to help attendees experience Melaleuca’s unique culture by sharing success

and beyond. Notable moments of recognition included the celebration of Ana & Charles Leota for advancing their business all the way to Director 9, and double qualifying for successfully developing two Director 3s. Similarly, Janet & Vaea Lang-Siu’s double qualification for advancing all the way to Directors 8 for also having developed two businesses to Director 3. More impressive than the advancements were the personal journeys of hardship, strength and courage behind them. We had some great insights and experiences shared by some of the Senior and Executive Directors in attendance. On conclusion of the two-day conference, Janet Lang-Siu considered all that she had learnt and expressed that this journey is not a dream and her husband and business partner, Vaea, also shared his take away from the event, ‘I have a strengthened passion and vision, and I am going to get to Senior Director’.

stories and celebrating their success. It is a time to reflect on their lives so that they can dream about their future – as a Senior Director—and make a life-changing decision to make it a reality. This year, we had twenty-eight Marketing Executives in attendance. Sixteen of these businesses qualified for a fully hosted event, i.e. flights, accommodation, transfers, meals, and training courtesy of Melaleuca! What a fabulous opportunity and incentive for those starting out on their Melaleuca journey. Congratulations to each of those businesses that achieved the Director 3 milestone
