Leadership in Action – AUNZ English – 201809

There are five baby grand pianos spread throughout

the Mayo Clinic campus that patients and family are invited to play. During my visit, I listened to a young man play hymns and classics for over an hour. It was inspiring to watch how the simple act of sharing his talents touched others. Sharing our talents, enhancing others’ lives, and practising gratitude are key habits for any successful life. For the next few days, practise starting and ending each day with two questions: 1. What am I grateful for today? 2. Who will I help today?

I think you’ll find that answering these questions consistently will help you feel empowered to reach your goals. It will give you greater belief in yourself and your abilities, and it will add meaning and purpose to your life.

When you start consistently making and practising changes in your life, you’ll start noticing a difference in how you feel, look, and think. Celebrate these changes. Celebrate when you track your calories for three consecutive days or when you exercise for five days in a row. Celebrate when you add five names to your contact list every day for a week or make at least 20 weekly calls. You’ll find the simple act of breaking your goal into smaller chunks and focusing on the day-to-day actions will help you reach larger goals faster and more frequently. Want to try a fun experiment? Consider what specific and realistic goal you want to reach over the next six months, whether in health or business. Develop a game plan to make it happen, and take action. Then enjoy what you learn and how you grow in the process!
