SAVING AMERICA

Bill Ford recruited Alan Mulally to become CEO of Ford Motor Company. Ford had losses of $17 Billion that year. With some great leadership, eight years later, the company posted a $20 billion profit and was the only U.S. motor company that did not take a Federal bailout. The CEOs of both GM and Chrysler appeared before the House of Representatives. One Congressman asked if they were asking for precious taxpayer money. Did they fly private jets toWashington? Both CEOs said,“Yes, I’m sorry. Please give us the money.” Mulally was asked the same question, to which he said he was not asking for precious taxpayer money, but he was appearing on behalf of his competitors. Mulally appeared before Congress on behalf of his competitors because if they failed, the entire automotive supply chain would collapse. If GM, Chrysler, and the automotive supply chain collapsed, Ford would most certainly also fail due to lack of parts. If the Big Three and the automotive supply chain had collapsed, then America would have entered a depression worse than the Great Depression, and the world would not doubt have followed us down. And that is how Alan Mulally saved America.

As kids get older, making time for family vacations becomes more and more important. Once the kids move out of the house, the demands of adulthood make scheduling a time when everyone can get away from work nearly impossible. While parents recognize the importance of continuing to make memories as a family, older kids can be a little harder to convince. Unimpressed teens scoff at the idea of visiting fairy- tale theme parks, and exhausted college students question why they should spend a week in the woods when they could be catching up on some much needed sleep. When you need to take your vacation planning up a notch, rest assured that you won’t have to break the bank to do it. Here are some exciting family vacation destinations that delight kids of all ages. A NEW KIND OF VACATION 7 T ravel D estinations for T eens and P arents

ARE 4-DAYWORKWEEKS THE SECRET TO PRODUCTIVITY?

Could you getmore donewith one less day in theweek?

Considering the fact that burnout —and the sick days that come with it — is such a problem in the United States, providing employees with a better work- life balance may be the secret to a happier, more productive workplace. After the successful trial, Perpetual Guardian opted to stick with the four-day workweek permanently. They provide several tips for implementing a four- day workweek at your company. • Speak to your staff and be clear about your objectives. • Ensure policy is well-supported and resourced. • Create a policy that can flex depending on workloads, projects, or customer requirements. • Let your customers know what’s going on and assure them there will be no drop in service. • Ensure the new employment structure doesn’t cut across legal requirements. • Be clear that the aim of the initiative is to benefit the company as well as the employees. • Recognize that flexible working initiatives aren’t magic bullets. If you’re interested in learningmore about Perpetual Guardian’s four-day work week, check out the white paper written by The University of Auckland researchers at 4DayWeek.co.nz/four-day-week-trial . • Do your own web and local research.

Of course not! Most of us need more time in the week, not less. At least, that’s the assumption. But a New Zealand company recently proved that when it comes to company productivity, less may meanmore. In March of 2018, Perpetual Guardian, a finance management company in New Zealand, began testing a four-day workweek for its 240 employees. Researchers from the University of Auckland and Auckland University of Technology studied the firmbefore, during, and after the trial. Perpetual Guardian isn’t the first company to test-drive a four-day workweek, but during the trial period, they did something unusual: They didn’t reduce employees’ salaries. Paying employees for five days of work while only requiring four days sounds like a surefire way to bankrupt a company, but researchers found the change had the opposite effect. By trimming the hours down andmaintaining pay, Perpetual Guardian saw a 20 percent increase in productivity. The shorter workweek motivated employees to get their work done quicker by cutting downmeeting times, becomingmore self-motivated, and telling their colleagues when they were being distracting.

After the trial, employees at Perpetual Guardian also reported feeling 7 percent less stressed and a 24 percent improvement in work-life balance.

The Golden Era of Athletes on Social Media OUT OF THE DARK AND ONTO THE WEB

It’s not an overstatement to say that social media has revolutionized the way we live our lives today. But with that massively powerful platform comes a massive responsibility, especially if you’re already in the spotlight. Athletes have taken the opportunity social media affords them to build their personal brands and engage in community outreach with the fans who look to them as role models, but there’s a downside to cataloging years of unfiltered thoughts on the internet. For better or worse, social media is here to stay, and we have full access to all the drama that unfolds for our entertainment. Despite the web’s potential for good, some pros can’t seem to get the message that every post falls under the scrutiny of the public. PR firms representing players have nowmade it a top priority to keep their clients’ images in line by scrubbing old posts that could be offensive and land them in hot water. Still, though, it seems like there’s a new controversy every week. One of the best examples comes courtesy of former football star“Johnny Football”Manziel. The former Heisman Trophy winner was notorious for posting embarrassing images of himself partying when he should have been practicing, and he often blasted his private issues in public, seemingly

with no filter. He’s out of a job now, most recently having been banned from the Canadian Football League. For every bad apple, though, there is a bushel of athletes who use their platforms for the greater good. Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, five-time Pro Bowler and NFL star, has used his social media“juice”to spread the word about his charity, raising over $4.6 million for youth athletic programs and organizations. Philanthropy aside, part of the beauty of celebrity social media is that the people who seem so much larger than life become accessible because of it. In decades past, you might have written a letter that, if you were fortunate, got a response from some unpaid intern. Today, fans can reach out directly to their favorite athletes. It is a personal connection unparalleled in history. What a time to be alive.
