Getting To Know The BioSport PT Staff! KOREE RINGER , PT , DPT

During graduate school, while getting her doctorate, Koree was challenged yet again after she underwent a brain surgery that dramatically affected her ability to walk, talk, and perform everyday activities. Thankfully she has made a full recovery, however, Koree was able to learn and grow through this experience. Koree has come to believe in a treatment style that focuses on the whole individual. She believes in order for a patient to heal, Koree must treat the physical, mental, emotional sides as well. Koree was able to take the lessons she was taught by her physical therapists and incorporate them into her own teaching methods and treatment style. In Koree’s free time, she enjoys hiking, exploring the outdoors, coaching youth sports, and other outdoor recreational activities. She absolutely adores and loves traveling, and would never pass up the opportunity to go to the beach.

Koree was born and raised in beautiful and sunny San Diego. She began playing soccer and basketball at an early age and continued on to play soccer throughout college at Azusa Pacific University while majoring in Applied Health for Physical Therapy. She completed her Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California in 2015. Koree developed her passion and drive for physical therapy after experiencing multiple knee injuries that left her on crutches for three of her four years of high school. Her physical therapists had a large impact on her not just with rehabilitation but with lifelong lessons. The most memorable message her therapists instilled in her was: “Even through adversity, one has to smile and laugh.”

LIVING LIFE WITHOUT BACK PAIN Reel In The Best Treatment For Back Aches!

INSIDE: • Understanding Why Your Back Hurts • Healthy Recipe • Relieve Back Pain In Minutes • Patient Success Spotlight

For some, back pain is a daily occurrence that dictates the way you live your life. Every movement, every motion is determined by the pain in your back. Standing, sitting, laying down, driving, walking or running — the pain persists. In ages past, back pain was difficult to treat. If you experienced back pain, whether as a result of a work injury, trip-and-fall accident, or even just as a result of aging, the answer was almost always the same: head home, take a long rest, and give your back time to heal. This isn’t the way that things go anymore, and for several reasons. To start, the world isn’t as forgiving. Heading home and taking a long rest until your back is healed may work for some, but not for most. With deadlines and carpools and work schedules to keep up with, there needs to be an alternate solution to dealing with back pain that doesn’t require you to completely remove yourself from your responsibilities. What’s more, recent research indicates that resting may not actually be the ideal solution for long-term back care. Spending too much time on

the couch or off your feet can cause the back muscles to weaken and can even weaken bone strength. This could lead to more long-term issues with back pain — not fewer. Exercise, in general, is shown to increase strength and flexibility, supporting healthy muscles and bones, and therefore supporting ideal back health. Physical Therapy for Back Pain While rest and relaxation can help you overcome the immediate pain of a back injury, and may even be recommended by your physician in the early days following an injury, it is not a long-term solution. Physical therapy offers a long-term solution to back pain by using targeted exercises that focus on the cause of the pain. Through a combination of strength and flexibility training that focuses on muscle development and joint movement, physical therapy can address the underlying cause of the pain and significantly improve your quality of life.

UNDERSTANDING WHY YOUR BACK HURTS

There are a lot of different reasons that back pain can develop. Even when you break down injuries, whether from overuse or athletic pursuits, there are different problems that can develop. Sprains and strains are common, but so are issues with the vertebrae, blood flow, and even concerns regarding the spinal nerves. You might be amazed to discover the different factors that could be influencing your back health. Such as: • Your personal level of physical activity, including how often you exercise and the intensity of your typical workouts. • The types of shoes that you wear, in addition to how frequently you walk in different types of shoes, particularly shoes that lack support or those with high heels. • Prolonged engagement in sedentary behavior, including sitting at a desk for eight hours or more consecutive days of the week, or spending free time on the couch or otherwise relaxed. Aerobic activity and strength training exercises actually make it possible to reduce your risk of injury and to improve your ability to overcome back pain by strengthening the vertebrae and improving blood flow and nutrient disbursement throughout the back. When you are inactive, blood flow can actually become impeded, and this can have a negative effect on the overall health of your back and spine. How Physical Therapy Helps Anyone who has struggled with back pain can tell you plain and simple: When your back is hurting, there is no way to pretend that it isn’t. Simply

going from sedentary activity to being active and healthy isn’t an option — at least not so easily. It takes time and effort, and when back pain is obstructing you from getting started, it requires help. Physical therapy can help you overcome back pain by giving you the knowledge and support necessary to help your back feel better, giving you the option to get off the couch and push yourself to reach new goals. Working with a licensed and experienced physical therapist ensures that you do not take on too much too quickly, but instead are guided through the process of healing with gradual steps. I had a bothersome and painful sciatic nerve problem caused by a fall frommy roof in 1996 which damaged lumbar vertebrae. I have been able to live a fairly pain free life for the last several years, thanks to Leo. I am now in my mid 90s and Leo and his exercise regimen have helped me survive for the last several years. Thank you Leo and all of the other very friendly people at BioSport. Besides building up our bodies, we have a great, joyful time together. It’s always a great time with Leo and at BioSport.” – Donald S. 2 3 5 4 9 http://1sudoku.com n° 228597 - Level Medium

DO YOU SUFFER FROM CERVICAL PAIN? IF YOU HAVEN’T TRIED CUPPING & TRACTION , THEN YOU HAVEN’T TRIED EVERYTHING!

There are many different reasons for neck pain. The neck requires good alignment, proper movement, strength and stability to work correctly. The neck or cervical spine has to bear the weight of the head, which is around 10-12lbs (the weight of a bowling ball). With injury or prolonged poor posture (for example sitting at a computer), change in alignment, weakness and instability start to occur. This irritates the structures of the neck and can even impinge on the nerves exiting the neck, or the central canal protecting the spinal cord. How Physical Therapy Helps Our physical therapists perform a thorough evaluation of your neck to determine your range of motion, strength, posture and alignment. Sometimes, where the pain is occurring, is not the source of the problem. Often a limitation in movement above or below the painful area is causing excessive pressure or poor function of the painful area. With gentle hands on therapy, special exercises and modalities such as cupping or cervical traction, we can relieve your pain, restore motion and get you back to activities quickly without neck pain.

Decreased stiffness is another welcome result many patients experience. By helping to improve circulation, especially of blood and lymphatic fluids, internal scar tissue is also broken up. This improves flexibility for the patient, as well as creates a greater range of motion.

What is Cervical Traction Cervical traction is a treatment often used in physical therapy to help treat neck pain and cervical radiculopathy. Neck pain can limit your ability to turn your head, look up or down, or perform normal activities like sleeping or exercising. Symptoms that often come from your neck include pain in the middle of your neck, pain in one side of your neck, or pain in one or both of your shoulder blades. Occasionally, symptoms coming from your neck may be felt as pain or numbness and tingling in your arm or hand. Since many different symptoms coming from your neck can be felt in many different places, it’s important to see your physical therapist to help determine the cause of your symptoms and to decide on the best way to manage your condition. Your PT can show you what to do (and what to avoid) to properly manage your neck pain.

What Is Cupping Therapy? As the name suggests, “cupping” involves placing several cups over strategic points on the body. Traditionally, suction was created when the practitioner lit a fire inside the cup to warm it, and then placed it on the patient’s skin to cool, but modern versions also exist. The resulting suction redirects circulation, allowing blood and other fluids to flow to areas in need of healing.

Because proper circulation is a key component of treating so many conditions, it’s not surprising that cupping is used as complementary therapy for a wide range of health issues, from acne to high blood pressure and depression. In terms of physical therapy, cupping is generally used in conjunction with other treatments to help alleviate pain. Neck pain, lower back pain and migraines are among the conditions for which patients have reported favorable results.
