venirs. For a last publicity fling, have a parade through town with auto floats, decorated bikes and skates, a police escort, enthusiastic flagwavers, children and sandwich signs and a loud-speaker (perhaps an ice cream treat at parade’s end). Program In Dallas, Tex., last year Ed Hayes (now director of B io l a ’ s Christian Education department) laid down his seminary text books and went across town to help the Reinhart Bible Church develop its summer program. First Ed separated teen-agers from younger kids by arranging an evening YBS program for the ado lescents. He provided handcrafts, music, food and elective courses in two subjects: one doctrinal and the other practical. It became a popular social time with good solid Bible study made easier by the cool night air. The kids loved it. They felt grown up. John Tucker, director of “ Youth Crusaders” in Chattanooga, Term., stresses the importance of program themes. Last summer in Lee Rob ertson’s Highland Park Baptist Church of Chattanooga he used the auto theme in the Beginner depart ment, the U.S. Navy theme in the Primary department and the Air Force theme for Juniors. The auto theme worked like this: each grade was named after a well- known car (Ford, Chevy, Plymouth, etc.). At the front of the room Tucker set up a large cardboard car given to him by a local car dealer. Each child was given a small con struction-paper suitcase with his name on it to place in the trunk of the car. This way the roll is easily checked. Then the children were ready to take a trip into the Bible by car. The Primaries were all called “ sailors,” organized according to names of ships and given comman ders. Each ship had its own flag and distinction. The Juniors were divided into flights, with an officer in charge of each flight. They were taught to march, stand at attention and salute. Each department was called a “ squadron.” Each flight had a flag.
