STONE RESTORATION
S tone restoration expert, S McConnell & Sons Ltd, was called in to breathe life back into the 150- year old sandstone section of The Ewart Building. The external walls of the original linen warehouse, built in 1869, were in need of cosmetic repair and some rebuilding work as part of the job. “The building, in parts, was in poor condition,” said Alan McConnell, company Director. “Typical of a sandstone building of this age, there was water damage and general decay, but due to its city centre location, it also carried damage from bullets and bomb shrapnel sustained during The Troubles. Some were left in, as it was deemed historical.” More serious work involved taking down and rebuilding sections of unsafe, leaning walls. “That was challenging but we are extremely experienced in working on restoration of old buildings.”
Commenting on the completed project Alan said, “We are incredibly proud to be a part of this project. It’s always an honour to be selected to do this type of work.”

FALL PROTECTION SYSTEMS
K Contracts supplied and installed fall protection systems to McAleer & Rushe for The Ewart building project in the heart of Belfast City Centre. “On the roof of the listed Ewart building we supplied and installed a cable based fall restraint system,” said Cathal Kerrigan, Director of K Contracts. “And for the new build, 17-storey tower we supplied and installed a series of Davit bases and a Davit Arm for abseiling to the facade. The Davit Bases were cast into the concrete structure. “In addition we installed a series of bespoke stepovers to the new building roof.” K Contracts is a specialist contractor servicing the construction and related sectors who specialise in the supply and installation of fall arrest anchorage devices.
