THE LEGACY OF FL INT’S F INEST Inspiring the Next Generation

One of my greatest joys in life is basketball. I have many fond memories from childhood summers spent playing three-on- three at the downtown YMCA. March Madness will be starting up soon and as a basketball fan, a lot of people want to knowmy predictions. But the truth is, I won’t be spending much time watching college ball. Traditionally, March is when my traveling basketball organization, Flint’s Finest Basketball Club, begins the spring season. I founded Flint’s Finest 11 years ago with the goal of promoting positive values like discipline, commitment, leadership, and integrity in the young men of the Flint community. Since our very first practice, Flint’s Finest has grown more than I could have imagined, becoming something truly great. Our teams — one for fourth grade and more from seventh to 11th grade — are full of young men who love playing basketball and want to learn how to work hard. As we’ve grown as an organization, we’ve been able to start traveling out of state for some games, which is something many of these kids have never been able to do before.

“Flint’s Finest is about more than playing basketball. I

started the club to inspire kids in my community to grow. ”

There are a lot of ways Flint’s Finest is able help these young men grow. I’m not the only coach anymore. We work with a lot of talented people in the community who act as coaches and role models. Anytime you can put kids around successful adults, they get to see for themselves what it is possible to achieve. Plus, when kids are given the opportunity to excel in sports it can open doors for them. Over the years we’ve had a number of kids win sports scholarships thanks to the skills they learned with Flint’s Finest. But athletics aren’t the only skills these kids learn in sports. When I look back at the very first Flint’s Finest teams, not all of those kids got sports scholarships, but they all went to college. Going to college is really important, because that’s how kids can find where they shine. Flint’s Finest is about more than playing basketball. I started the club to inspire kids in my community to grow— that’s what life is all about. We take the knowledge we learn in life and pass it on to the next generation, giving them the tools to become even more successful than we are. When the kids of today grow up to become even better adults, it makes the whole world a better place to live. If you know a young man who would like to play on one of our teams, or if you are interested in volunteering with Flint’s Finest, you can learn more at FlintsFinestBasketball.org . I am really proud of what Flint’s Finest has become, and I look forward to seeing it continue to grow.

This year we’ve joined the national circuit hosted by the Under Armour Association (UAA). This is a very exciting opportunity! Our middle school teams — seventh and eighth grade —will be playing in Chicago, Indianapolis, and Kansas City over the spring and summer. A

lot of planning goes into this event as we make sure our kids will be safe and have a great time in these cities. Most of the kids in Flint’s Finest have never traveled out of state before. When I was young, I traveled for bowling tournaments, and I remember how much of an impression it made on me to realize that the world was so much bigger than my town. I’m glad to be able to share this experience with the kids on our teams.

3 Great Family-Friendly Superhero Comics

the world, these super sons must learn to trust each other — and themselves — to save the day. Based on the hit “Super Sons” comic book series, “Super Sons: The Polarshield Project” doesn’t hit shelves until April 2, 2019, which means you and your kids have plenty of time to reserve a copy of this graphic novel at your local comic book shop! ‘CHAMPIONS’ “Champions” is a story about teenage superheroes, but don’t expect pizza or relationship drama in these panels. These comics tackle how young people today approach problems, with a readiness to rally together and take matters into their own hands. “Champions” doesn’t shy away from hard topics, making it more appropriate for older kids and teens. But that doesn’t mean this story lacks heart or humor. Featuring comic favorites like Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man as well as popular newcomers, “Champions” is about identity, purpose, and what it really means to save the world.

It’s no secret that superhero movies are dominating the box office. The highest-grossing movies of 2018 (and the third and fourth highest-grossing of all time) were “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” There’s never been a better time to be a fan of superheroes or to become a fan of superhero comics. If your kids are interested in reading more about superheroes, here are a few great titles your whole family can enjoy together. ‘MS. MARVEL’ Since her debut in 2013, Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, has been a wildly popular character, and her comic has gained critical acclaim. A 2015 Hugo Award winner, “Ms. Marvel” explores what it means to be a teenager, a first-generation American, a friend, and a superhero. The storylines promote an important message: “Good is not a thing you are, it’s a thing you do.” In just a few years, Ms. Marvel has become an established superhero in comics, and it won’t be long before she steps onto the big screen with a live-action movie. ‘SUPER SONS: THE POLARSHIELD PROJECT’ Jon Kent, son of Superman, and Damian Wayne, son of Batman, couldn’t be more different. But when a mysterious force threatens

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR RECOVERY 5 Tips to Get the Most Out of Physical Therapy

condition or why you’re doing certain exercises. Be sure to talk to your physical therapist about your recovery goals and how you’re doing outside of your treatment. Knowing your situation will help your PT make important decisions regarding your treatment. 4. DO YOURHOMEWORK It is incredibly important that you do your home exercises exactly as instructed. There’s only so much healing that can be done during your appointments. If you want to recover from your injury and make your pain a thing of the past, you need to exercise at home too. If you’re struggling to perform your exercises at home, talk to your PT and ask for advice. 5. DON’T GIVE UP! It’s well known that physical therapy can help patients recover from their injuries faster, but this is not an overnight solution. Youmust work hard and be committed to your treatment. Theremay be struggles and slumps along the way, but you can do it! Don’t sell yourself short. If you have any questions about how you can maximize your physical therapy sessions, feel free to ask at your next appointment, or give us a call at 810-620-8042. Physical therapy is a team effort and we want to help you succeed.

If you’re suffering from an injury, or struggling with chronic pain, your primary focus should be healing. Physical therapy can help, but it’s not a magic cure. Here are five things you need to remember to get the most out of your next physical therapy appointment. 1. DRESS FOR SUCCESS Jeans or long sleeves are not the best fashion choice for your physical therapy appointments. Not only will they be uncomfortable to exercise in, but they can also prevent your physical therapist frombeing able to quickly examine the injured part of your body. Wear comfortable workout clothes like shorts or loose sweatpants that you can pull up over the knee, a tank top or loose-fitting t-shirt, and closed-toe shoes. 2. BEAT THE CLOCK If possible, try to arrive a fewminutes early for your appointment. This will give you a little extra time to ask any questions you’ve thought of since your last appointment. You will get the most time possible with your PT, while ensuring you don’t accidentally go overtime and affect the next patient’s session. 3. BE CHATTY Open communication between a patient and their physical therapist is extremely important. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about your

Celebrate Dr. Seuss

1 BOOK, 2 BOOK

Who Was Theodor Geisel? On March 2, Read Across America Day is celebrated by students, teachers, and community members in towns throughout the country. They chose that date to pay homage to one of the most beloved children’s authors who was born that day: Theodor Geisel. That name may sound unfamiliar to you, but “Dr. Seuss” should ring a few bells. His name alone is so associated with literacy that in 2007, the author of an article in U.S. News &World Report that chronicled the history of 1957 — the year “The Cat in the Hat” was published —wrote, “Greece had Zeus —America has Seuss.” In 2001, Publisher’s Weekly released a list of the bestselling hardcover children’s books of all time in the U.S. Of the books in the top 100, Seuss authored 16, which is more than any other author on the list by a long shot. But Seuss did not break into the children’s literature industry easily.

Seuss and his nearly 50 children’s books almost never got off the ground. His first children’s book, “And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street,” was denied by more than a dozen publishers. Legend has it that Seuss was on his way home to burn

the manuscript when he ran into an old friend who suggested another publisher. The rest is history.

Given the enthusiasm for reading Dr. Seuss has fostered in children for the past eight decades, it’s no wonder the National Education Association chose his birthday to mark a day dedicated to celebrating reading. After all, he’s often quoted as saying, “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read with a child.”
