Unlock the Magic of Listening Did You Hear That?

As bestselling author Bryant H. McGill once said, “One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what

Here at CHB, in our business, communication is key and the biggest part of that is being able to hear and understand what is being said from the speaker’s point of view/perception, not our own. When we start interjecting what we “think” we heard, that is when wires get crossed and things are taken out of context. Listening is a key component in both our personal and professional lives. Here are some ways in which listening more intently is worth the extra effort. It fosters success. Successful individuals have keen listening skills. They know how to communicate effectively and efficiently while avoiding misunderstandings. When you listen well, you know how to understand the needs of others and how to communicate your own needs. It builds trust. When we stop what we are doing and genuinely take the time to listen to what others are saying, it shows we care. In turn, this builds trust and healthy relationships in our personal and professional lives. It makes you more productive. By actively listening, you are better able to understand what is expected of you. Through this effective communication, you are more likely to complete projects correctly the first time around and greatly reduce having to backtrack or research missing links from conversations. Listening is a skill that takes patience and practice. The next time you’re having a conversation with a friend, family member, or colleague, we challenge you to go the extra mile to actively listen. When you listen to understand instead of just to respond, you’ll be fascinated by how much more you hear! –Kit West & Ed Meyer

“When we start interjecting what

another has to say.” On July

18, we celebrate World Listening

we ‘think’ we heard, that is when wires get crossed and things are taken out of context.”

Day, a time in which we place an extra focus on listening to others. However, we have a question for you: Are you just listening, or are you really listening? Because there’s a difference!

Listening can be tough. Oftentimes, when we get caught up in all of the duties and obligations in our day-to-day

lives, when others are speaking to us, we listen to respond instead of listening to actually understand what ideas, feelings, and emotions others are trying to convey. Most of us can relate to this when we were young. Did we listen very well? Probably not, as we were

too busy moving fast and breaking things. We did not need to listen. So, developing this trait over time is key, as it is used more and more as we “mature.” Today, in our adult world, we need to be cognizant of listening well. This includes taking what we hear, then removing biases, applying logic and some human nature to get creative.

This isn’t to say that Mr. Bachmann was easy on his class. In one pivotal moment, the teacher reprimands a student for acting unkind to a classmate. When the student provides a halfhearted excuse, Bachmann replies, “I don’t really believe that, but I’ll treat it as though it were sincere.” The student can clearly feel the teacher’s disappointment despite no obvious scolding or berating. Mr. Bachmann guides his students with a genuine heart and a steady hand. The affectionate film immerses the viewers in Bachmann’s classroom to witness the evolution of these students. Whether watching those who decide to spend their lunch hour with him in his classroom and others who share their most vulnerable feelings, viewers realize that all of these students needed an educator who showed sympathy and kindness. THE JOURNEY OF A GERMAN CLASSROOM Learn Life Lessons With Mr. Bachmann

The documentary “Mr. Bachmann and His Class” shows how a small-town German teacher helps his diverse students feel at home. This heartfelt documentary even won several awards, including the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, because of its simple, uplifting message. In the film, the rural town of Stadtallendorf has a history of employing migrant workers dating back to World War II. Despite having many immigrants in the city, Stadtallendorf has a history of excluding non- German residents. This divide is an issue that weighs heavily on students.

In a classroom of 12–13-year-old students from different countries, Dieter Bachmann uses his authentic positivity to help each student become confident about their own potential. In one scene, after returning graded assignments to his students, he reassures those who scored lower by saying, “These grades do not reflect who you are.” “Mr. Bachmann and His Class” follows the magnetic bunch until retirement. While there are plenty of films about heroic teachers, this gentle documentary reveals more about how all it takes is genuine interest and effort to change students’ lives. Build Loyalty With Storytelling Marketing

Tell a Story and Gain a Following

How can storytelling benefit you? Businesses worldwide have been reaping the benefits of storytelling, and it has worked well enough to become the new standard. Whether you’re sharing why you started your business or adapting stories that align with your company’s beliefs, storytelling marketing can:

We all love stories. Be it books, movies, or current events, we can’t help but thrive on storytelling in our everyday lives. We even process information better when it’s told as a narrative. A study by psychologist Jerome Bruner discovered that people were 22 times more likely to remember a fact when embedded in a story. That makes storytelling a powerful tool to reach your audience. Storytelling marketing is when brands use a narrative to convey their message. In our era, consumers require more than a basic display of your product. Consumers are searching for why they should trust — and buy from — you. The best way to do this is to utilize storytelling marketing. Not only will it help customers better understand your business, but it also humanizes your company.

Instead of sharing your story, you could create a tale with powerful metaphors and a lively narrative to draw in your audience. Whatever approach you take, storytelling marketing will ensure you leave a greater impression.
