Housing Choices Australia Group - Annual Report 2020

NDIS CREDIBILITY

The Specialist Housing Group (SHG) have enjoyed sharing another busy year of successes and lessons, with our commitment to people with disability, their families, carers and guardians, remaining paramount. We have continued to extend and deepen our work with our clients and communities to ensure our strength as a service provider continues to enrich the lives of people with disability by creating choice and opportunities for life, so they can live the life they choose. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic saw the need for the SHG to significantly re-focus its services in the second half of the financial year to lead the delivery of vital disability accommodation services. This was not without its challenges. Whilst it would be easy to dwell on some of the challenges and complexities we have had to address in 2020, it would take away from the following:

The opportunity to work and get to really know our residents living in Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is the result of the new NDIS. We have been working with those transitioning into the NDIS, our services entering the NDIS and our organisational systems continuing to change as requirements change. The scheme has created significant anxiety for individuals, families and service providers, with some reporting low levels of funding and others having to wait for extended periods before they have a plan and funding in place. The SHG has continued to share learnings and contribute to making the NDIS as good as possible, which has led to the increased credibility we have as an organisation with the NDIS.

PILLAR FIVE

We also invested in the fifth strategic pillar of “Building housing choices for participants in Specialist Disability Accommodation”. Once again, I acknowledge the commitment of my fellow SHG colleagues. Together we are stronger, more responsive, and more successful. I am proud of the way in which we have supported each other and our SDA residents in rising to the challenges posed by this pandemic. I am a firm believer that together, we can truly enhance one another’s work, and that our joint vision will enable great things for the communities we serve.

STRONGER TOGETHER

Despite the challenges faced with the significant impact of COVID-19 in Victoria, all those involved with the SHG, have again demonstrated their determination and depth of character. The SHG is finishing 2019/20 in a stronger position than the previous year due to:

The ongoing positive results of the various client outcomes we deliver

Continuing to improve the skill and capabilities of all SHG sta

The relationships we have built with our partners

Our strengthened financial position, which underpins the ongoing services we can provide and ensures our future remains relevant to the changing needs of this sector; and Further developing relationships with community and industry collaborators to enable us to extend our reach, while still remaining local.
