CATHY’S MY NAME, LITIGATION IS NOT A GAME Why Your Cases Matter to Me

I started in the legal field 36 years ago as a receptionist in Houston. Through the twists and turns, I have seen it all, but what stands out to me the most is the amount of care a good law firm pours into their work. I came to Alex and Saavedra in 2004. Immediately, I noticed how much heart they put into their cases. Finding a job working for respectable people can be difficult to come by. I feel fortunate to work for Andrew and Freddy. Their display of morals and quality character is nothing short of inspiring. They go above and beyond for their clients every step of the way, every day. That same passion and dedication inspires me to be the best litigation assistant I can be. When I was working in Houston, an attorney took me under her wing and taught me everything she knew. Through all of her lessons, my biggest takeaway was learning what to look for. If you know where to dig, you become an invaluable asset to a case. It is not always easy — you only gain that skill from knowledge and experience — but it is gratifying. I love helping clients fight their battles and making sure they know we are always here for them. Addressing details is pivotal when working a case, which is why a good litigation assistant makes all the difference. I manage everything from case initiation all the way up to trial. This involves a lot of nuanced communication. For

That kind of comfort goes a long way in easing the burdens a lawsuit can put on our clients. Burdens like unexpected medical bills and expenses are a significant concern and stressor for a client. Our firm does not just sit back and let you struggle — we go to bat for you.

“The ultimate reward is knowing I am there to support someone each step of the way through a stressful situation.”

example, sometimes insurance companies try to undercut claimants. We never let our clients get taken advantage of, so that means I need to get the insurance company on the phone, open up the lines of effective communication, and gather as much favorable evidence as I can. It is my job to dive into these situations and find solutions. For anything I am unable to do, I know I can always rely on our skilled attorneys to know the right course of action. Working with wonderful attorneys is just one part of the job that I love. The ultimate reward is knowing I am there to support someone each step of the way through a stressful situation. When clients call, they know I will have an exact update on their case and can reassure them that the process is moving in the right direction.

I love where I work, and most importantly, I love the people I get to work with. There are so many talented people in our office, all with a heart to serve others. No one is here just to pick up a paycheck and go home. We pour passion into our jobs and we genuinely care. I have been here for the last 14 years for a reason. We fight at a high level. We care at a high level. We win at a high level.

HOW TO ACHIEVE A MORE RESTFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP

A good night’s sleep is one of the most important things you can do for your mind and body. One study published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research found that the quality of your sleep is much more important than the quantity — that is, if you want to feel rested. And we all want to feel rested. So, what can you do to improve the quality of your sleep and get the rest you need? LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. This, above all else, is crucial to a good night’s sleep. Your body knows when it’s time for bed. Generally, you want to go to bed when you feel tired, whether that’s at 8 p.m. or 1 a.m. Whenever your body tells you it needs rest, you should make a habit of going to bed then. The more consistent you are, the better your sleep will be. WAKE UP NATURALLY. Jolting yourself awake with an alarm or radio isn’t doing your brain and body any favors (it can be stressful on the body and even elevate blood pressure, which is not good first thing in the morning). If you do need an alarm, consider a wake-up light. Wake-up lights mimic the sunrise, slowly brightening the room, waking your body in a natural, gentle way. There’s nothing better than getting out on the boat in the summertime. Whether it’s Lake Powell or the popular Lake Havasu, the warm waters of Arizona are tough to beat. Unfortunately, our beautiful recreation spots present the potential for injury or even death. No one should have to endure harm while enjoying the fun a boat provides, so we want to give you two pointers for staying safe out on the lake. SAFETY CHECK Roughly 80 percent of boat accidents occur on vessels that haven’t had a proper safety inspection before taking to the water. This creates a potentially volatile situation for the owner of the craft. A formality like a safety check doesn’t take that much time — about 15 minutes — and you can do most of it on your own. The U.S. Coast Guard provides a checklist that you can run through in your driveway. When you do the legwork, the final check from an examiner takes significantly less time. RESPONSIBILITY 39 percent of fatal boating accidents involve alcohol consumption. If you’ve been drinking while out on the lake, have a designated driver. Just because you are on the water doesn’t mean the rules don’t apply. Impairment is impairment, and in the state of Arizona, you can still get a DUI on a boat. Keep safe on the lake this summer. If you’ve been hurt in a boating accident and want to know if you have a case, contact us today. From water skiing to collisions, we specialize in getting you results. 2 LegalBetter.com 2 Tips to Avoid Boating Accidents

KICK THE SCREEN HABIT. You’ve heard it before, and you’ll hear it again: Looking at an electronic screen — a TV, computer, tablet, or smartphone — before bed is detrimental to sleep quality. Light from these devices is disruptive to your brain’s suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), which helps regulate your circadian rhythm, and screen time before bed can throw off normal SCN function. Put your excuses for staying up too late to bed. Say no to “one more episode.” And all those emails? They can wait until tomorrow. Not getting enough quality sleep is harmful to your mental and physical health. When you get into the habit of following these three tips, you’ll find yourself feeling rested and refreshed in no time.

Given the evergreen popularity of road trip movies, it’s no surprise that the big screen has seen its fair share of iconic motorcycles over the years. There’s just something about two wheels and the open road that’s perfectly suited to cinema’s panoramic scope. Here are three of the most famous motorcycles in Hollywood history, along with the movies that made them famous.

‘EASY RIDER’ (1969) Bike: Custom Harley-Davidson Hydra Glide Rider: Wyatt (Peter Fonda)

CLIENT REFERRAL

It’s hard to think of a more perfect motorcycle movie than “Easy Rider.” Directed by Dennis Hopper, the film centers around Wyatt and Billy (Hopper) traveling from Los Angeles to New Orleans by bike. Wyatt’s “Captain America” Harley Davidson is as essential to the movie as any of the human characters. You really can’t talk about movie motorcycles without paying tribute to this all-time great.

‘PURPLE RAIN’ (1984) Bike: Custom Honda Hondamatic CM400A Rider: The Kid (Prince)

Here at Alex & Saavedra, nothing is more important to us than helping people. We care about our clients and the community, and we want to help as many people as possible reach a settlement they deserve. The opportunity to touch lives is just one of the reasons we’re so grateful for your referrals! To us, a referral is the highest compliment, and we want to say thank you to everyone who has trusted us enough to send family and friends our way.

Prince never had a problem creating his own personal style, from his clothes and his guitars to this striking motorcycle used in “Purple Rain.” The bike —which is, of course, purple — features heavily in the film and on the album cover to the accompanying soundtrack. It’s hard to think of anything cooler than Prince riding around Minneapolis on his Honda while “When Doves Cry” plays in the background.

‘TOP GUN’ (1986) Bike: Kawasaki GPZ 900 R Rider: Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise)

When you think “Top Gun,” you probably think of fighter jets before motorcycles, but the motorcycle Maverick rides gets more screen time than any of the planes in the movie. Whether cruising around Air Station Miramar or picking up Charlie Blackwood (Kelly McGillis) for a ride, the bike is a main character in many of the film’s most memorable moments. Riding a motorcycle in real life isn’t always as glamorous as in the movies. Accidents happen, and injuries happen. If you’re injured in a motorcycle accident, call our office today to find out how we can help. 3 602-971-1775

Ordinary Things That Are Bad for You

Common Health Risks Daily Activities That Cause Health Problems

LARGE HANDBAGS Large handbags allow you to carry many items at once, but they can also pose a hazard to your health. According to Dr. Sabrina Strickland, an orthopedic surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, your body counters the weight of a heavy bag hanging from your shoulder by lifting your shoulder or leaning to the side, which curves your spine. This can cause muscle pain in the shoulders, neck, and back, along with joint strain. Decreasing the size of the bag you’re carrying and the weight of your items are great ways to counter this.

SITTING IS THE NEW SMOKING This has been a common new health statement to come out of many medical centers. Sitting daily for long periods of time has been proven to increase health risks, like cardiovascular disease. One of the best methods to counter the effects of sitting is to take regular breaks. Every 30 minutes spent sitting should be coupled with five minutes of physical activity, such as a brisk walk. Even taking a few minutes to stand and stretch is better than sitting still for hours on end. Don’t let these everyday activities stress your body out too much. Finding that perfect balance can be tough, but the results will pay for themselves!

Even if you make a point to exercise every day and watch your diet, you can still face health risks you may not be aware of. Common daily activities can cause more harm than you’d think. SKINNY JEANS Though stylish, skinny jeans can create more problems than they’re worth. They can cause muscle damage and blood restriction when worn regularly for long periods of time. In fact, wearing any tightly fitted article of clothing frequently can lead to the same effects. To avoid these issues, don’t wear tight clothes for long periods of time and refrain from exercising in them.
