' T H E S IG H IN G REED " Beside a brook a brown reed grew, A dark, unlovely thing That knew not A u tum n 's changing tints N or bourgeoning of spring. The graceful grasses bowed before The zephyr's flying feet; The flowers bent beside the pool Their mirrored charms to greet; The dragon-flies were living gems Swift darting here and there; The butterflies on drifting wings W ere blossoms of the air; The happy birds sang all the day; A nd every swaying tree Beneath the w ind's light touch be came A n instrument of glee. A ll things had voice and loveliness Save that dark spirit lone, Yet was there pent within its depths A music all unknown. "M a ste r of all," the brown reed sighed, "H a st Thou no need of me? W h at can I do ih T h y fair world. Despised and ill to see? So awkward I amid its grace, A n d out of harmony; So silent I amid its sounds O f mirth and melody. Fill me with song till my sad heart W ith praise shall overflow; Grant me, through any pang or pain, Some grace of life to know ." There came a singer through the wood. Above the reed he leant, W ith skillful hand the stiff brown stem H e broke and pierced and bent; Then to his lips he lifted it A n d softly in it blew, A n d lo! there woke a sweeter note Than all the forest knew. The birds were silent on the bough, The pine tree's chant sank low, The wind-harp ceased its melody, The streamlet hushed its flow. The while they listened, charmed and still, A s 'neath the M aster's hand, Weeled forth a strain of solemn joy They could not understand. From beauty song and gladsomeness He took the sighing reed, The music they had failed to loose. By pain and suffering freed. Take Thou, O God! my spirit mute, A n d shape as Thou hast meant, Till for T hy Spirit pure it make A fitting instrument; Then breathe T h y breath through all its length. Till emptiness and dearth Shall wake to nobler harmonies Than any song of Earth. Annie Johnson Flint
