polite to chew gum in public and in sisted that all gum be discarded. Two teachers calmly con tinued chewing. (It eases tension. Besides, adults chew more discreetly!) Susan hastily wrote a note, folded it, and passed it to Ann. Her teacher frowned. The next Sunday during opening worship, the teacher passed a not to Susan. (This was an important mes sage that couldn’t wait!) Miss Smith reminded her Begin ners that Jesus wants His helpers to be kind and thoughtful. “We should always say please when we ask for something and thank you when some one does something for us.” Later Miss Smith said, “ John, get the box of crayons from the table.” (She was in a hurry.) Susan saw a bee crawling across the brim of a teacher’s hat. While everyone else closed his eyes for prayer, Susan stared as the bee inched closer to the teacher’s hair. “ Susan, are you ready to pray?” the superintendent asked. But Mrs. Johnson kept her eyes open during the prayer. She even added a note to her lesson sheet. Mr. Carter reminded Craig that he should not read — even his lesson manual—during the worship service. But Craig noticed that Mr. Carter sneaked last-minute glances in his teacher’ s quarterly during worship time. “ George, please don’t interrupt. Mrs. White and I are talking,” his teacher said. But later, when George was talk ing with the departmental superin tendent, his teacher approached them. Right in the middle of George’s sen tence, she said, “ Don’t forget that Mrs. London will take my class next week!" Puzzled, George thought that his teacher didn’t even see him! If you recognize yourself in any of these incidents, perhaps it is time for you to mind your church manners. Be a doer as well as a teller of what is right. “ Thou therefore which teach- est another, teachest thou not thy self?” (Rom. 2:21) “ Be thou an ex ample of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (I Tim. 4:12). — From: Teaching Tips

Q. We have a real problem with our tvorkers and teachers when it comes to Church manners and habits. We seem to have one set of standards for the students and another for the tvorkers. Can you suggest something that will help us help our workers and teachers? A. A recent article MIND YOUR CHURCH M A N N E R S perhaps would help your workers and teach ers. Here it is : Have you ever noticed that adults often set one standard for children and another for themselves? If an adult overturns a cup of coffee on the kitchen table, it is merely an acci dent. But if a child spills half a glass of milk, he’s in for a scolding for his carelessness. There seem to be double standards in Sunday school and church, too. Have these, or similar incidents, oc curred in your own department? Johnny thought that after class he’d forget to tell Steve about his new model car. So he told him while the others were singing. His teachers reprimanded him: “We must be rev erent in God’s house. We worship God by singing, giving, and listen ing.” During the offering, his teacher remembered that Mrs. Jones didn’t know about the upcoming committee meeting. “I ’d better tell her now . . . this is important,” she decided. The departmental superintendent reminded the children that it is im
