W h o se im a g e a n d Outline (1 ) The Law of the Land, 20:19-26. '(2 ) The Law of th e Lord, 21:1-4. Introduction: Our Lord is in th e temple teaching. Note how much of H is tim e was given to teaching, and the value of it. The Jews are there. The leaders are there. They are no t seeking LESSON His wisdom, no t desir- EXPOSETION ing to be helped, not T. O. H orton sitting a t His feet as learn ers; bu t are th e critics, watching and weighing every word. The longer they waited upon His messages, the more determ ined they were to g et rid of Him. Yet th ere He was in th eir m idst, seeking to in stru ct them , seeking to save them from th e ir own selfish, sinful life. The lesson em braces two separate p assag e s,,b u t we will un ite them under a common theme: (1 ) THE LAW OF THE LAND, 20: 19-26. “Whose image and super scription h a th it? ” (a) The C raft of the Jews, vs. 19-20. The Jews were under th e power of the Romans and subject to th eir authority.

They had th e ir temple worship. There were divisions amongst them in religious m atters, b u t they were united in their hatred of Jesus and His growing pop ularity. They combined to catch Him, if possible. Some b righ t Jew proposed th e plan, no doubt. He claimed to be th e Messiah, and if so, they assumed th a t He would be opposed to earthly authority, and so they sought to ally Him w ith th e enemies of the King, and set spies to watch Him. It is th e old story. It was so in Jerem iah ’s day (Jer. 20:10) - n u r ----------n ea ra m e defaming o f fear on ev ery a i d e . R e p o r t, s a y w e , ."M 1 re p o rt I t. (2 Pet. 2 :3 .) “A n d through c ov et ous nes s sh w it h f e ig n e d wor ds mak e m er ch yo n: w hos e judg men t now o f a l b e ^ e t h ^ n o t 1” * ’ a “ d tl le *r d a m n a They will come in sheep’s clothing, but they will be wolves. It is always a wonder to see to what lengths men will go in order to defeat the purposes of God and to rob Christ of His place and glory.
