across the United States to increase the recovery of polypro- pylene by an estimated 13 million pounds annually to be made into new products. This includes consumer packaging and automotive parts. The coalition awards grants to material recovery facility (MRF) candidates that face challenges in their ability to ef- fectively sort and recycle polypropylene. According to the coalition, just under 60 percent of Americans have access to recycle PP. The geographic reach of the first three rounds of coali- tion MRF grantees includes the Northeast, Southeast, Upper Midwest, South Central and West Coast regions, including California. The coalition received a strong response to each of the three prior requests for proposals and continues to accept grant applications to further its efforts to advance polypropylene curbside recycling. The next grant proposal request is due September 30. The Polypropylene Recycling Coalition is a cross-industry effort supported by steering committee members Keurig Dr Pepper, Braskem, NextGen Consortium and the Walmart Foundation, along with other members of the polypropyl- ene value chain. The coalition is part of The Recycling Partnership’s Path- way to Circularity, an initiative to create scalable solutions to packaging and system challenges. Novelis, Georgia Tech Expand Research Partnership Aluminum rolling and recycling company Novelis Inc., headquartered in Atlanta, has expanded its research part- nership with the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) Novelis Innovation Hub.The partners are focused on materials and process research designed to help Novelis ful- fill its sustainability objectives and reach a net-zero-carbon footprint by 2050. This extended cooperation will build on the programs already underway to develop new generations of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, making use of aluminum to improve their performance. The extended programs will target im- proved performance with higher amounts of recycled alu- minum in batteries. The new strategic programs that are part of the extended partnership include circular economy solutions or decar- bonization of the industrial footprint and the promotion of entrepreneurship and incubation of new ventures. Novelis said these new programs will help to accelerate the com- mercialization of new products, resulting in broader rela- tionships with Georgia Tech’s business and commercializa- tion groups.
