“Serving The Industry For More Than Fifty Years”

SWANA Names Safety Award Winners reported by Greg Kishbaugh T he Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), Silver Spring, Maryland, has announced the 2021 SWANA Safety Award winners. The winners will be recognized atWastecon in Orlando, Flor- ida,November 2,with presentations by some of the winning programs being included as part of the SWANA Safety Summit on November 3.

Communities Receive Recycling Grants The Recycling Partnership,Falls Church, Virginia, has announced the third round of grant funding through its Polypropyl- ene Recycling Coalition, distributing $1.8 million to help six grant recipients ad- vance curbside polypropylene (PP) recy- cling. The coalition, which launched one year ago, has awarded grants totaling $4.2 million to date. Funding Recycling Efforts The coalition has helped fund 13 facil- ities’ recycling efforts, which will report- edly positively impact nearly 15 million Americans. The organization estimates that curbside acceptance of PP will in- crease by 6 percent once these 13 facili- ties install equipment by early 2022.This will result in more PP being sent to estab- lished end markets and encouraging the shift to a circular economy. The six newest grant recipients include: • GreenWaste, San Jose, California; • Murphy Road, Berlin, Connecticut; • Palm Beach County, Florida; • Pellitteri, Madison,Wisconsin; • Sonoco-Raleigh, Raleigh, North Caro- lina; and, • Sonoco-Onslow, Jacksonville, North Carolina. To date, the coalition has awarded grants

UMD Researcher Awarded $6M From DOE For Biofuels Stephanie Lansing, professor in the Department of En- vironmental Science and Technology at the University of Maryland (UMD), has been awarded two grants totaling $6 million from the U.S.Department of Energy (DOE) to devel- op sustainable products like biofuels and bioplastics from food waste. With these two grants from DOE, Lansing will lead a consortium of scientists and industry partners to not only research innovative ways to use waste, but also make val- ue-added products that will contribute to the sustainability of the economy and planet. Value-Added Products These new grants from DOE are a natural extension of the work Lansing does in her Bioenergy and Bioprocess- ing Technology Laboratory, converting waste products into energy and value-added products, often through anaerobic digestion. As part of the $3.5 million grant focused on bio- fuel production, Lansing and her team across Ohio State University, Mississippi State University,Virginia Tech, Idaho National Lab, SCS Engineers and Quasar Energy Group will be first conducting a large characterization study across ev- ery region of the country and every season of the year to understand how location and the time of year affects the waste coming into landfills, and what the biofuel potential of that waste really is.

Macquarie Makes Investment In LRS

LRS, an independent waste diversion, recycling and por- table services provider based in Morton Grove, Illinois, has completed a significant equity investment to accommodate and scale its growth. The investment was made by Macquarie Infrastructure Partners (MIP) V, an Americas-focused, $6.9 billion unlisted infrastructure fund managed by Sydney-based MacquarieAs- set Management (MAM). Financial terms were not disclosed. Major Investment Under the banner of the MIP series of funds, MAM-man- aged funds have invested more than $2.9 billion in the waste industry in the Americas since 2007, including investments inWaste Industries,WCA, GFL Environmental,WINWaste In- novations, Solví and now LRS. The investment follows a year of aggressive growth for LRS, as evidenced by the acquisition of 12 waste, recycling and portable toilet companies in Illinois,Wisconsin, Michi- gan, Indiana,Minnesota and Iowa.Additionally, the company has experienced significant organic growth through being awarded numerous large municipal contracts, including the entire city of Chicago’s Blue Cart recycling contract. Since its formation in 2013, LRS has grown from a single location with 200 employees and annual revenues of less than $50 million to a $375 million regional leader in waste diversion and recycling.

Rumpke Invests In Robotics To Sort PP

Rumpke Waste & Recycling, headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, has invested almost $2 million to install three robots at its recycling facility. The company said this investment will help the facility to “better sort plastic containers from the rest of the recycling stream and supports new recycling growth for the region.” Rumpke said the investment was partially funded by a grant from The Recycling Partnership to help the plant to recover polypropylene (PP). Funding from The Recycling Partnership’s Polypropylene Recycling Coalition must be used to improve PP sorting in the MRF. Rumpke also plans to add two more robots in the coming months to help the plant to further improve on quality with sorting PP scrap. Rumpke invested in Machinex SamurAI robots. The ro- bots use artificial intelligence to identify materials and engage articulated arms to grab the material and direct it through the plant. The robots also can make about 70 picks per minute. DS Smith Expresses Concerns Over UK Paper Recycling Rate U.K. recycling rates for paper and cardboard packaging have dropped from a peak of 80 percent in 2017 to 65 per- cent in 2020, according to data from the U.K.-based Confed- eration of Paper Industries (CPI). DS Smith, a packaging producer headquartered in London, England, said that if the U.K. could recycle this material into new packaging papers instead of sending it to landfills or incineration, it could be worth up to 2 billion pounds (or about $2.8 billion), based on research from CPI. DS Smith says the U.K. is facing a “creaking recycling infrastructure” and complex local recycling rules. According to a news release from DS Smith, the company makes 20 billion boxes a year and advocates separate col- lections for paper and cardboard to improve the quality and quantity of recycling. “As Europe’s largest recycler of paper and cardboard, we have committed to manufacturing 100 percent recyclable packaging by 2023 and are acutely aware of the huge re- sponsibilities we face in protecting the environment and reducing waste,” said Miles Roberts, group CEO at DS Smith. “But we can only do this efficiently if we all play our part in managing resources more effectively and make it as easy as possible for people to recycle properly in their home, oth- erwise we risk serious economic and environmental conse- quences for generations to come.” In other news, DS Smith said demand for its products has been strong, but rising prices for the old corrugated con- tainers (OCC) it buys is prompting it to charge more for its product line. “Input costs have continued to rise, with notable increases in the cost of energy and transportation,”said Roberts.“Com- bined with the cost of OCC remaining high, this has resulted in further significant increases in the price of paper.”

Taco Bell Expands Program To Recycle Sauce Packets Taco Bell has announced the expansion of a program to increase recycling and reduce the 8.2 billion sauce packets that end up in landfills. The program, which began as an initial trial earlier this year, is a partnership between Taco Bell and TerraCycle.Ter- raCycle is an international recycling company that collects traditionally non-recyclable items, cleans them, then melts and remolds them into hard plastic that can be used to make recycled products. Since announcing the partnership in April, Taco Bell and TerraCycle have been working through logistics, including health and safety considerations, and are simultaneously de- termining the most feasible way to collect packets in-restau- rant. Based on testing and past experience, TerraCycle’s mail-back model will be used to help customers minimize their transportation footprint and ship their box of saved sauce packets once full. The results of this pilot launch will determine the most viable long-term solutions for Taco Bell moving forward. Sonoco Inks Deal With AMP Robotics Sonoco Products Company has joined forces with AMP Robotics to recycle the spiral wound paper canister with steel bottom produced by it and other manufacturers. Recycled steel usage has a 45 percent lesser environmental impact when compared to producing an equal amount from a virgin material, which, in turn, reduces the need for mining virgin iron ore. Also, reprocessing the paper container with steel bottom through steel or other streams has more than 40 percent lower environmental impact than landfilling.Any material recycling with an AMP Cortex intelligent robotics system can now efficiently classify Sonoco’s paper can to the desired stream. OCWR Launches Waste Diversion Education Initiative California’s Orange County Waste & Recycling (OCWR) has partnered with the Orange County Department of Ed- ucation’s (OCDE’s) Inside the Outdoors environmental ed- ucation program to provide local educators with materials that support classroom lessons, student engagement and family activities related to Orange County’s waste diversion efforts. Nearly 20 local schools have participated in a pilot program to sample and give feedback on the new curricu- lum, with dozens more expected to implement the program in the upcoming 2021-22 school year. Aimed at building environmental literacy, the program seeks to support local communities in achieving the organ- ic waste diversion goals set forth under Senate Bill 1383. Approved by the governor in 2016, the law changed the way California manages organic waste and required a 75 percent reduction in the statewide disposal of organics by January 1, 2025, compared with 2014 levels.

PepsiCo, Walmart, Sam’s Club Pilot New Recycling Program PepsiCo Beverages NorthAmerica,Walmart and Sam’s Club are piloting a new program to increase recycling awareness and participation in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Tulsa-area shoppers can bring their beverage containers to be recycled Thursday to Sunday at two Walmart and two Sam’s Club locations all in Tulsa. Through the partnership, twoWalmart and two Sam’s Club locations inTulsa will provide on-site recycling services. The stores will collect polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and alu- minum beverage containers. The stores will feature trailers and visible signage in the parking lots to invite shoppers to drop off PET bottles and aluminum cans. As the trailers fill up, the pilot program’s partner, Reple- nysh, will take collected materials to local recycling facil- ities, where they will be baled and shipped to processors. Shoppers also will be incentivized to participate by earning rewards and prizes each week by using the Replenysh app. According to a news release from PepsiCo Beverages North America, Oklahoma has one mixed recycling facility to serve the state’s 4 million residents. Providing on-site re- cycling at these four locations will help to build out a decen- tralized recycling network to make recycling more accessi- ble for Oklahoma residents. PepsiCo reports that the collection of these recyclables at these stores will become part of a closed loop, maximiz- ing recycling convenience and increasing access to clean recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET). The company said this ultimately supports a circular economy and helps to advance the shared mission of PepsiCo, Sam’s Club and Walmart to achieve 100 percent recyclable or compostable packaging by 2025. Reportedly, 87 percent of PepsiCo’s packaging is currently recyclable where facilities exist, com- postable or biodegradable. Walmart and Sam’s Club hit 62 percent of its private brand packaging as being recyclable, reusable or industrially compostable.
