Rumpke Invests In Robotics To Sort PP

Rumpke Waste & Recycling, headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, has invested almost $2 million to install three robots at its recycling facility. The company said this investment will help the facility to “better sort plastic containers from the rest of the recycling stream and supports new recycling growth for the region.” Rumpke said the investment was partially funded by a grant from The Recycling Partnership to help the plant to recover polypropylene (PP). Funding from The Recycling Partnership’s Polypropylene Recycling Coalition must be used to improve PP sorting in the MRF. Rumpke also plans to add two more robots in the coming months to help the plant to further improve on quality with sorting PP scrap. Rumpke invested in Machinex SamurAI robots. The ro- bots use artificial intelligence to identify materials and engage articulated arms to grab the material and direct it through the plant. The robots also can make about 70 picks per minute. DS Smith Expresses Concerns Over UK Paper Recycling Rate U.K. recycling rates for paper and cardboard packaging have dropped from a peak of 80 percent in 2017 to 65 per- cent in 2020, according to data from the U.K.-based Confed- eration of Paper Industries (CPI). DS Smith, a packaging producer headquartered in London, England, said that if the U.K. could recycle this material into new packaging papers instead of sending it to landfills or incineration, it could be worth up to 2 billion pounds (or about $2.8 billion), based on research from CPI. DS Smith says the U.K. is facing a “creaking recycling infrastructure” and complex local recycling rules. According to a news release from DS Smith, the company makes 20 billion boxes a year and advocates separate col- lections for paper and cardboard to improve the quality and quantity of recycling. “As Europe’s largest recycler of paper and cardboard, we have committed to manufacturing 100 percent recyclable packaging by 2023 and are acutely aware of the huge re- sponsibilities we face in protecting the environment and reducing waste,” said Miles Roberts, group CEO at DS Smith. “But we can only do this efficiently if we all play our part in managing resources more effectively and make it as easy as possible for people to recycle properly in their home, oth- erwise we risk serious economic and environmental conse- quences for generations to come.” In other news, DS Smith said demand for its products has been strong, but rising prices for the old corrugated con- tainers (OCC) it buys is prompting it to charge more for its product line. “Input costs have continued to rise, with notable increases in the cost of energy and transportation,”said Roberts.“Com- bined with the cost of OCC remaining high, this has resulted in further significant increases in the price of paper.”

Wired. Proven auto-tie technology outputs tighter bales, faster.

When it comes to premium baling technology, after the bale build phase nothing matters more than a properly tied bale. Our approach to automated bale tying is based on over 60 years of continuous improvement. The Balemaster auto-tie technology is a combination of proven electro/mechanical concepts, operator-tested automation and built-to-last construction and design engineering principles. So, until we invent wireless baling, there’s nothing easier, nothing more reliable and nothing faster than Balemaster’s Auto-Tier.

More than a source. A resource.
