Taco Bell Expands Program To Recycle Sauce Packets Taco Bell has announced the expansion of a program to increase recycling and reduce the 8.2 billion sauce packets that end up in landfills. The program, which began as an initial trial earlier this year, is a partnership between Taco Bell and TerraCycle.Ter- raCycle is an international recycling company that collects traditionally non-recyclable items, cleans them, then melts and remolds them into hard plastic that can be used to make recycled products. Since announcing the partnership in April, Taco Bell and TerraCycle have been working through logistics, including health and safety considerations, and are simultaneously de- termining the most feasible way to collect packets in-restau- rant. Based on testing and past experience, TerraCycle’s mail-back model will be used to help customers minimize their transportation footprint and ship their box of saved sauce packets once full. The results of this pilot launch will determine the most viable long-term solutions for Taco Bell moving forward. Sonoco Inks Deal With AMP Robotics Sonoco Products Company has joined forces with AMP Robotics to recycle the spiral wound paper canister with steel bottom produced by it and other manufacturers. Recycled steel usage has a 45 percent lesser environmental impact when compared to producing an equal amount from a virgin material, which, in turn, reduces the need for mining virgin iron ore. Also, reprocessing the paper container with steel bottom through steel or other streams has more than 40 percent lower environmental impact than landfilling.Any material recycling with an AMP Cortex intelligent robotics system can now efficiently classify Sonoco’s paper can to the desired stream. OCWR Launches Waste Diversion Education Initiative California’s Orange County Waste & Recycling (OCWR) has partnered with the Orange County Department of Ed- ucation’s (OCDE’s) Inside the Outdoors environmental ed- ucation program to provide local educators with materials that support classroom lessons, student engagement and family activities related to Orange County’s waste diversion efforts. Nearly 20 local schools have participated in a pilot program to sample and give feedback on the new curricu- lum, with dozens more expected to implement the program in the upcoming 2021-22 school year. Aimed at building environmental literacy, the program seeks to support local communities in achieving the organ- ic waste diversion goals set forth under Senate Bill 1383. Approved by the governor in 2016, the law changed the way California manages organic waste and required a 75 percent reduction in the statewide disposal of organics by January 1, 2025, compared with 2014 levels.
