HMRC website’s transition to GOV.UK

31 March 2014

As you may already be aware, HMRC’s web guidance and tools are moving to the cross- government website GOV.UK.

HMRC has a dedicated HMRC transition blog which has regular updates on the transition work. Their latest post talks about the work they are doing with the Government Digital Service (GDS) to move more than 100,000 pages of HMRC content (and its users) across to GOV.UK. They admit that it is no easy task and are taking a staggered approach, avoiding peak times as much as they can. HMRC and GDS are working together to improve the format, ‘findability’, and clarity of content being moved. Technical material such as manuals and HMRC Notices will be presented in new, user-friendly formats, but the text will stay as it is. Existing transactions will remain on the HMRC site for now, but customers will access them through GOV.UK. HMRC accept that customer needs vary and have already started talking to the main professional bodies and their Agent Stakeholder and Engagement team’s knowledge of tax agents to find out what priorities they have as users of GOV.UK and what specific needs there might be. The HMRC transition blog provides regular updates and for those of you who have an interest in the transition of information and would like to provide comment, this is the ideal platform. Previous posts include topics such as HMRC Manuals which talks about the fact that the manuals will not be edited, unlike much of the content that moves to GOV.UK, they will be repurposed into a format that is easier to search, easier to browse, easier to view and easier to print. CIPP comment The CIPP policy team are involved with many pieces of work in respect of the digital strategy through various fora. HMRC are continually exploring ways in which the new digital culture could be exploited further to assist employers and business. Do you have any ideas? If so, please email policy with your thoughts. GOV.UK will eventually be the one main site where all guidance and tools will be housed. There is a feedback button on the site located on the bottom left of each page titled ‘Is there anything wrong with this page?’ We would encourage consumers to use this tool to assist with continual improvements to the site.
