Bear safety warning With the arrival of fall, bear sightings in some parts of Eastern Ontario and other regions of the province have prompted the Ministry of Natural Resources to issue a bear safety alert. Rural homeowners are advised to make sure to keep their yards clear of anything which might attract bears to scavenge food as part of their winter hiber- nation preparation. Keep household garbage in secure airtight containers stored inside either the house, garage, or a secure outbuilding and do not place it outside until
the morning of garbage collection. Wash out garbage containers with bleach on a regular basis. Do not leave pet food outside of the house. Any properties with orchards or solitary fruit trees should be kept clear of windfall fruit. Do not put meat scraps or used cooking oil in compost heaps and clean barbecue grills of any leftover grease before storing inside the garage. If a bear is seen in the area or enters a yard, do not panic, as it may just be passing through. Keep dogs inside and do not go out while the bear is present. A tree and a plaque have been installed in the MacDougall Park, in Russell, in honor of Jean-Paul St. Pierre. !e former mayor suddenly passed away on October 18, 2014. !e unveiling took place on the 18 and was organized by his widow Jocelyn St. Pierre as well as the “Picton gang”, long time friends of the couple. Pictured above are several of the former mayor’s family members; Leah, Je" (his son), Grace, Samantha, Steve (his son), twins Olivia and Emma, Dylan, Tracy and Ruth, who all surround Jocelyn St. Pierre.
Housing subsidy increase approved Operators of low-income housing units in the Prescott-Russell region will get the financial help they need to maintain their dwellings and provide good housing for their tenants. The United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) council approved a one-dollar increase in the daily subsidy that the UCPR provides landlords with social housing facilities for eligible resident tenants they have for domiciliary hostels located with Prescott-Russell. The increase from the present per diem of $50 to the new $51 rate will take effect Jan. 1, 2016. The resolution, approved during the Sept. 21 counties council regular session, also states that the UCPR council and staff will review and, if needs be, revise the maximum limit of subsidized residents which might qualify for the per diem as part of the upcoming 2016 counties budget discus- sions. – Gregg Chamberlain
Port de la ceinture de sécurité La Police provinciale de l’Ontario, secteur Est, lance sa campagne de sécurité sur le port de la ceinture de sécurité. Entre le 23 septembre et le 9 octobre 2015, les agents se sont fait voir en effectuant des contrôles routiers sur le port de la ceinture de sécurité afin de s’assurer que les automobilistes et leurs passagers étaient bien attachés. Lors de cette campagne, les agents ont interpellé plusieurs conducteurs qui n’étaient pas attachés. Les agents ont également été témoins de six colli- sions avec blessures qui étaient en lien direct avec l’absence du port de la ceinture. Ils ont aussi arrêté 981 personnes qui ne portaient pas leur ceinture de sécurité. « Porter sa cein- ture de sécurité peut sauver la vie », de dire Daniel Redmond, superintendant chef de la région de l’Est de l’Ontario. - Annie Lafortune
