Young Russell girl, an inspiration for many

ALEXIA MARSILLO alexia.marsillo@eap.on.ca

A young girl from Russell has taken the initiative to do what she can to help others. In doing so, she has inspired others around her to do the same. Eleven-year-old Casielle Bles has been walking the streets of Russell and Embrun since she was five years old, collecting non- perishable food donations for the Good Neighbours Food Bank. Within the past six years, Casielle has collected – as well as hauled, boxed, weighed and delivered – 3500 pounds of non-perishable food to the Good Neighbours Food Bank in Embrun. Casielle immediately wanted to help after she saw a commercial on television asking for donations for starving children in Af- rica. “So, I asked my dad if I could donate to them and he said how about we do it in

Casielle’s drive to help others also spread to her younger brother, who saw what his sister was doing and wanted to join in. He joined her on several occasions, walking down the street with their father, collecting food donations. The annual tradition and the challenge of collecting more and more each year will live on. In her first year, in 2011, Casi- elle collected 250 pounds of non-perishable food. She then dedicated herself to beating her own personal goals each year after that. “We try to go out every weekend,” said Casielle. If we can’t, we try to do it in our neighbourhood, like just down the street on weeknights.” By 2014, Casielle took her efforts to the next level. She began to ask her friends to participate by giving her food donations for her birthday instead of presents. The first year she did this, she was able to collect over 800 pounds of food for the food bank. Casielle continued to challenge friends to help her surpass her goals and, in doing so, inspired them to take to the streets them- selves to collect food donations. this place [Russell] because there are people here,” recalled Casielle. “And we started two weeks later.”
