Where’s the Orange? There will be Liberal red ballots and Tory blue ballots cast for certain at the polls in Glen- garry-Prescott-Russell during the provincial election in June this year. But so far there is no one confirmed to carry the orange banner for the NDP in the riding.The NDP head office in Toronto confirmed, during a phone query, that there is no candidate for the party yet in the Glengarry-Prescott-Russell riding.The official start for the provincial election campaign is May 9.The NDP head office confirmed that the candidate nomination process for the GPR is in progress but gave no further details. – Gregg Chamberlain Francis Drouin a Top 10 MP He may be part of the Liberal backbench on Parliament Hill but Glengarry-Prescott- Russell MP Francis Drouin is among the Top Ten Most Lobbied MPs in the current Trudeau administration, according to an analysis by The Hill Times, the weekly newspaper for the federal government. Hill Times staff did a recent review of more than 35,000 records filed to the federal lobbyists’ registry for 2017 and found that Drouin ranks fourth among the top 10 MP’s most lobbied on issues by their constituents. At 136 postings on agricultural issues to the registry, Drouin got more lob- bying messages from his rural riding than any member of the Liberal cabinet, except for Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains, MP for Mississauga-Malton. – Gregg Chamberlain Jailed for drunk driving Raymond Lavigne, 43, of Moose Creek, was sentenced to a total of seven months in jail following two convictions for driving while disqualified and one of impaired driving. He had pled guilty to the charges in October 2017 but sentencing was postponed to the January 10, 2018 provincial court session, to allow him time to see to the support of his family while he was in jail. Lavigne has past records for impaired driving and other related charges, which allows for jail time as part of his sentencing. Judge Marc D’Amour noted that the last such case in Lavigne’s record was in 2014 and that he has tried to “straighten up” since then. He allowed Lavigne 15 days credit for the jail time on one of the charges. After Lavigne’s sentence is up, he will be on 12-month probation and must pay a $300 victim’s surcharge fine. His license is already suspended from a past conviction. – Gregg Chamberlain Heavy fine for drugs John Douglas Dancey, a resident of the Na- tion Municipality (community not available) pled guilty in provincial court in L’Orignal on January 31 to production of marijuana and possession of amphetamine, also known as speed. The charges resulted from a police investigation on September 6, 2017. At the time Dancey was found in possession of several marijuana plants at his residence along with about 100 amphetamine pills. Police also seized a set of brass knuckles found on the premises. This is a prohibited weapon in Canada. Dancey was fined a total of $2500 on the two charges plus a $750 victim surcharge. He is now banned for 10 years from possessing any type of weapon, ammunition or explosive, and must provide a DNA sample to police. Police received court approval to destroy the confiscated brass knuckles. – Gregg Chamberlain

Les investissements dans les infrastructures et l’Accord de libre-échange nord- américain (ALENA) ont dominé le bilan de l’an dernier selon le député fédéral de Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, Francis Drouin. Il a indiqué que l’engagement pris par le gouvernement fédéral dans le budget 2016, d’investir dans les infrastructures, a été tenu et que cela s’est reflété dans le budget exercice 2017. « En 2017, on a vu les fruits des annonces du budget 2016 et je pense que ça fonctionne très bien sur le plan national, a expliqué M. Drouin. On a vu des annonces ici à Hawkesbury, à Maxville, à Alexandria, un peu partout dans le comté. Cela donne un coup de main à l’économie et aussi aux municipalités qui perçoivent les taxes. Les municipalités ont des besoins incroyables en infrastructures. » Il a rappelé que le gouvernement fédéral entend investir 180 milliards de dollars sur 12 ans. M. Drouin a promis d’en faire profiter sa circonscription. Priorités pour 2018 Évoquant ses actions futures, Francis Drouin pense s’investir davantage dans les discussions sur l’Accord de libre-échange nord-américain. « C’est un accord qui est important pour les entreprises de notre région, surtout les entreprises exportatrices vers les États-Unis et même celles qui importent au Canada », a jugé le député. Son intérêt pour l’ALENA s’explique notamment par la présence à L’Orignal de l’usine Ivaco. Le sort du producteur mondial d’acier préoccupeM. Drouin qui, après avoir rencontré la direction, espère pouvoir tenir une séance de travail avec le syndicat. L’autre dossier qu’il entend suivre de près est celui des logements abordables, auquel le gouvernement voulait consacrer des fonds. « Il y a unmanque de logements abordables dans notre communauté. Quand je parle avec Alfred, avec Hawkesbury, avec Embrun, il y a un manque de logements abordables partout. On a fait l’annonce en 2017 qu’on allait investir 40milliards $ sur 11 ans. Mon job est de m’assurer qu’il y ait les fonds », a-t-il assuré.

Pour lui, il serait important de créer un partenariat entre la province et les municipalités afin demieux gérer ce dossier qui, à ses yeux, touche particulièrement les personnes âgées. Il explique que ces
dernières ont un faible revenu, vu qu’elles ne sont plus en activité. Lamanière d’éviter qu’elles tombent dans la pauvreté est de mettre à leur disposition des logements abordables, selon l’analyse de M. Drouin.

Drug possession Corey Edward Derochie, 42, of Maxville, pled guilty in provincial court in L’Orignal, January 24, to pos- session of cannabis resin and possession of psilo- cybin.The charges resulted from police investigation of a speeding incident in the Village of Limoges, December 7, 2017. The street value of the drugs found and seized was $234. Derochie was fined a total of $300 on the conviction plus a $90 victim surcharge fine. – Gregg Chamberlain Feedback wanted The Upper Canada District School Board has its draft 2018-2019 term calendar ready for public review. The calendar calls for schools opening for students on September 4, 2018, with final classes June 27, 2019.The winter break would be December 24, 2018 to January 4, 2019, and the spring break from March 11 to 15, 2019.
