LEGAL INJURY GUIDE

327 Bankhead Hwy, Carrollton, GA 30117 WORKERS’ COMPENSATION | PERSONAL INJURY | SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY

Kethy appreciates the diverse and inclusive environment that the founders of Smith, Wallis and Scott have cultivated. “The majority of us are Latinos. I love that,” Kethy says. “We’re like a small family here. We worry about each other and make sure we support each other.” When it comes to her team, Kethy has affectionate words for each member and points out how they all add to the culture of strength and compassion. “Jane, our paralegal, has been in the legal field for over 20 years; she has so much knowledge and experience. Isabel, who recently made partner, is super sweet. She looks like a young girl, but she’s a tiger when she fights for our clients. Chris is a gentle giant. He’s soft-spoken, but he’s never shy when fighting for our clients,” Kethy says. Kethy enjoys helping our clients get the treatment and services they need. “I feel good that I’ve helped. I try to look at the big picture,” she says, noting the way the firm provides support on a broader scale. “We reach out to the community to let people know we are here to help,” Kethy says. At home, it’s all about time with her husband and kids. “My daughter, Mia, is really into dance and plays. She just finished performing in ‘Grease,’” Kethy says of her 14-year-old. “I wanted to see every show, of course.” Kethy attended the first show as a patron, then volunteered as an usher to watch Mia’s second performance. Kethy’s son, Noah, is 10 and into “anything you can think of boy related,” Kethy says. On quieter days, Kethy and her family enjoy getting outside and discovering new places to hike. She also loves dancing and getting the whole family together to spend time with her parents. BEING AVOICE FOR THE UNDERREPRESENTED How Kethy Uses Her Skills to Help Our Clients

People come to us during very challenging times in their lives. They have suffered physical, mental, or emotional hardships due to the action — or inaction — of another person. It’s during these hard times that our team steps up and acts as a voice for our clients. Our personal injury team is passionate, caring, and courageous, and our administrative assistant, Kethy, is no exception. Kethy helps clients connect with professionals to get the treatment they need and follows up with them and their insurance companies to ensure the process goes smoothly. She comes from a background in insurance sales, which gives her a unique perspective in the personal injury field. Her perspective has given her valuable insight into what our clients experience and the hoops they have to go through with insurance companies. When she first met the team at Smith, Wallis, and Scott, she found it was a natural fit. “I liked their values and mission statement,” Kethy says. In addition to her background, Kethy’s desire to be a voice for underrepresented people made Smith, Wallis and Scott the perfect fit. “I really wanted to use my bilingual skills, and the firm has a lot of Spanish speaking clients,” Kethy says. “Anytime I can be an advocate for them, I’m there.”

We’re so grateful for what Kethy brings to our personal injury team, and we look forward to helping people in our community get the help they need.

WALK TOWORK DAY

A Start to a More Active Life

OBSERVING THE HOLIDAY To celebrate Walk to Work Day, simply slip on your walking shoes, grab a portable breakfast, and head out the door! Be sure to bring an extra outfit and shoes with you as walking in high heels, dress shoes, and/or dress attire can be uncomfortable. For people who don’t have the time, try taking a short walk around the workplace during breaks or lunch. Getting in a 15-minute walk during the day will help you feel more refreshed and ready to get back into the grind. You can also invite other coworkers or friends to walk with you. OTHER MODES OF TRANSPORTATION Although Walk to Work Day encourages people to walk, there are other ways to get to work without having to drive. Biking is an excellent means of transportation and can be helpful for people who might have a longer commute. If you don’t own a bike but are still in need of a quick transport between two locations, you can hop on an electric scooter. These scooters have appeared across America over the past year or so and have proven handy for individuals needing to get from point A to point B quickly.

Everyone knows that walking is healthy for us, but not very many people have the chance to stretch their legs. With a busy schedule, you might not have the luxury to get up earlier and get a quick brisk walk in. But that doesn’t mean routines can’t be changed. Walk to Work Day is an unofficial holiday that encourages people to walk more in their daily lives. Finding the time to walk for 30 minutes a day can help you lose weight, reduce the chance of heart disease and diabetes, and improve emotional and mental health. A LITTLE HISTORY Walk to Work Day takes place on the first Friday of April every year and has been celebrated since 2004. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services promoted the holiday with enthusiasm as a way to counter the alarming rise in obesity and health issues throughout the country. Since its debut, Walk to Work Day has been picked up by people, businesses, and organizations across the world to inspire people everywhere to exercise more.

Walk to Work Day offers a perfect chance to change up your routine for a more active lifestyle. Let this holiday be the first step in many that will come!

CARING FOR YOURSELF AFTER A COLLISION How to Protect Yourself

In the moments following an auto collision, everything seems like a blur. It can be hard to believe what just happened. Once you’ve ensured everyone else is okay, and that paramedics have been called if anyone requires medical attention, it’s time to think about how to best care for yourself in the aftermath of the collision. DOCUMENT THE SCENE The more you, a friend, or a family member can document the scene through pictures and other information, the easier it’ll be to establish fault going forward. Make sure you exchange information with the other driver and get their license plate number so you have all the information you’ll need. GO TO THE DOCTOR Once you’ve recovered from the shock of what happened, do a physical assessment. If anything feels off, go to a doctor. This is especially important in the first 72 hours after a collision. The longer you wait between the collision and seeing a doctor, the more difficult it will be to establish a connection between the collision and your injuries. KEEP RECEIPTS If you’ve seen a doctor, chiropractor, or paid for any other services related to the accident, keep those receipts. This can even include transportation costs to and from the doctor. These receipts will further show what you are owed from the at-fault driver.

In most collisions, there is an “at-fault” driver, a driver who was negligent or failed to control their vehicle, who is responsible for the situation you find yourself in. When that happens, you can file a claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance company. If that isn’t settled, a lawsuit must be filed within two years of the collision. If you or a loved one has been injured in a collision, let the attorneys at Smith, Wallis, and Scott be your legal representation. We are experienced in personal injury cases and are here to help. Give us a call so we can find the best course of action for your circumstances.

Baseball’s opening day has been an American holiday of sorts since the Cincinnati Red Stockings threw out the first major league pitch in 1869. To celebrate the start of the 150th season of professional baseball, here are three of the best opening days in baseball history. A NEW BEGINNING On April 15, 1947, an opening-day game changed the course of Major League Baseball. On this day, Jackie Robinson started for the Brooklyn Dodgers, becoming the first African-American player to start for a major league baseball team. Robinson’s historic showing was lackluster, going 0-for-3 at the plate and making a solid showing on the infield at first base, but his mere presence in a Dodgers uniform had already broken history. Despite his nationally- recognized skills — Robinson was named MVP of the MLB farm team league in 1946 — the backlash that followed his rise to the pros, both from fans and teammates, was palpable. Still, as well-known sportscaster Howard Cosell said, “Suddenly, it was a new beginning.” LOU, COMBS, AND BABE — OH MY! Considered one of the best teams in baseball history, the 1927 New York Yankees started their historic run and 25th season by dismantling the Philadelphia Athletics with a score of 8–3. The slugfest was true to form for the 1927 Yankees, whose players would go on to make up baseball’s famous “Murderers’ Row.” With sluggers like Lou Gehrig, Earle Combs, Babe Ruth, PEANUTS AND CRACKER JACKS The Best Opening Days in Baseball History

Mark Koenig, Bob Meusel, and Tony Lazzeri, it’s no wonder this team went on to win its fifth championship that year.

THE HAMMER TIES BAMBINO For decades, no one could match George Herman Ruth. The Great Bambino’s all-time home run record seemed like an impossible feat of strength — that is, until Henry “Hammerin’ Hank” Aaron came along. On opening day, April 4, 1974, Aaron smashed his 714th homer, tying Babe Ruth for the most home runs ever hit and extending the Atlanta Braves’ shutout lead over the Cincinnati Reds. A few weeks later, Aaron surpassed Ruth’s record, prompting a standing ovation from the crowd.
