Many women from Russell, Marvelville and area meet regularly at the Marvelville Community Centre with sewing machines, ironing boards, irons, fabric, patterns and sewing supplies to create dresses and skirts for orphaned children in Uganda. Shown here at the hall on November 15 are a few of the tailors helping A Cup for Africa: Jonie Campbell, Lianne Hébert, Connie Neilsen who introduced the initiative here, Mary Becker, Ruth Lea, and Jennifer Normandin. port other orphans through donations of money, hand-made clothing, food and Bibles. Former Ugandan Vedaste Ndamiye knew the need and involved Raymond Desmarais, who reached out to local res- ident Connie Nielsen, an avid seamstress and quilter. Their charity, A Cup for Africa Mission, had built an orphanage for 22 children on Kampala’s outskirts and sup- ports another 55 children who do not live there. The children are educated, clothed and get two meals a day, and live in a protected, gated compound. When Nielsen heard about the need from Desmarais she rounded up oth- er area seamstresses. About 15 people showed up at theMarvelville Community Centre on Saturday, November 15, with sewing supplies, including machines, ironing boards, irons and fabric, and in- dustriously put together a large amount of brand new lightweight clothing. Nielsen was very pleased with the tur- nout and is planning another sewing bee for late January or early February. To help she can be contacted at connie_ nielsen@rogers.com or 445-0814.
