NEWW Expands Capabilities In New England And Beyond BY JACKIE SCHULTZ

The BoxMaker To Acquire Tango Press In Arizona The BoxMaker, a leading digital packaging producer based in Kent, Washington, an- nounced that it has expanded its national reach with the acquisition of Springdale, Ar- izona based Tango Press. Terms of the deal were not disclosed and the parties expect closing to occur prior to the end of 2020. Tango Press opened in 2016 as an all-digi- tal production plant for corrugated packaging and displays. The company has a reputation in the marketplace for providing high-impact packaging and displays that meet customers’ unique needs, timeframe and price points. “The acquisition of Tango Press is a per- fect complement to The BoxMaker and our web-to-print brand, Fantastapack.com,” said Richard Brown, President and co-owner of The BoxMaker. “This addition gives us the opportunity to expand our reach and improve product distribution for digitally printed and finished packaging to businesses throughout the United States.” “As an all-digital production plant, Tango Press’ business model and culture are a natu- ral fit for The BoxMaker and we look forward to the expanded benefits that our combined

On the homepage of NEWW Packaging and Display’s website is the ta- gline: “A traditional company with modern capabilities.” The description is fitting considering the Massachusetts company’s history, which dates back nearly 200 years.

Founded in 1834 as the E. Murdock Co., the family-owned indepen- dent, formerly known as New England Wooden Ware, was at one time the largest manufacturer of wooden domestic products and containers in New England. NEWW transitioned from wood to corrugated packag- ing during the early 1940s and today is considered one of the premier flexographic printers in the United States. Multi-color graphics are avail- able as litho laminated labels, digital printing or flexographic printing. Sales Manager Ben Urquhart says NEWW excels at providing high quality printing and packaging for customers who are looking for more than just a box. Products include corrugated shippers and displays, and specialty cartons primarily for the biomedical and food and beverage markets and big box retailers throughout New England and beyond. Managing Volume Urquhart says NEWW is committed to exceeding customer expecta- tions through dedicated customer service, preventative maintenance, and consistent capital investment in state-of-the-art technology. That philosophy has proven successful with sales growing by roughly 50 percent over the past 10 years as the product mix shifted toward high- end graphics and litho-lamination. New Mexico To Invest $5M To Keep McKinley Paper Mill In Business NewMexico’s Cabinet Secretary Alicia J. Keyes announced last week that a long-time paper factory in McKinley Coun- ty will receive economic assistance from the state so it can install new equipment and remain in business for the next decade, retaining at least 125 well-paying jobs. Here is a statement from the New Mexico Economic Development Department: McKinley Paper has been reliant on the Escalante Gen- erating Station for steam power. The 253-megawatt, coal- fired power plant near Prewitt, New Mexico, operated by Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, closed at the end of August as the facility exhausted its remaining on-site fuel supply. The State of New Mexico, through the Economic Devel- opment Department, has pledged to invest $5 million from LEDA, the Local Economic Development Act, to sustain long-term operations at McKinley Paper. The LEDA grant will go toward construction of a new boiler and associated equipment, as well as inbound water systems and waste- water treatment. The company also recycles water to use within its system. “My administration has always been committed to pre- serving jobs in the northwestern part of our state,” Gov. CONTINUED ON PAGE 38

40 ft of paper travel from preheater to hot plates 3 seconds of heat, glue and bonding 1 chance to get it right! the ZONE

Design & Production

Chicago Electric offers 10 technology solutions to control ‘the Zone’ CORRUGATOR Sectoral preheating plate

Our sectoral preheating plates provide direct heat by means of a double steam circuit, allowing for efficient heating in hard-to-access locations, as well as to act as a steam shower to open the paper’s fibre, making it receptive to absorbing the heat and the glue.

This translates into increased speed and improved quality of the cardboard sheet finish.

The system’s main advantages are as follows:

• The plate may only be used to heat, only to humidify, or both options at the same time. • The plate is sectored, which allows for applying humidity to the sections. • It provides temperature in previously inaccessible locations and near the location needed. • It compensates the loss of temperature dissipated due to distance, speed or limitations of the exiting preheaters. • Quick transferring of heat to the paper. • The combination of the hot plate and steam shower allows for providing heat even to the hardest papers to heat. • Does not dry out the paper. • Possibility of operating as a humidifier and pre-conditioner. • Maintains and improves the fibre’s elasticity. • Acts according to the operator’s needs. • Facilitates the paper’s hygroscopy to absorb the glue and improve rubberising.

calibrations and settings. Bar systems avoid this, but compensate this with the risk of exces- sive glue application. The system contains many wearing parts. Solution The contact roll combines the ad antage of both systems and ensures minimum contact between board and applicator roll. The system uses small pneumatic cylinders in order to achieve a “soft touch.”

6. Gap Control 7. Curved Plate 8. Roller Shoe Press When it comes to a short-term increas of web tension, spring loaded systems with shoes or airpressure activated system have problems in compensating these. The system is lifted for a short time. This may result in de-lamination and in the ‘double kiss’ effect. Solution For a defined and exact bonding point of the web fiv weight rollers will be installed usually over the first flat hotplate of the heating section. The rolls are mounted into a frame, which is actuated by means of two pneumatic cylinders. P oductivity Issu —Double Kiss Bonding

Web is in contact to less flute tips compared to bar systems. • High precision glue application • Less moisture applied to web —No wear of shoes and springs —No adjustment of shoes or paper gap —Uniform glue application over entire working width for all flutes by use of pneumatic cylinders instead of springs — Less contamination by paper dust and glue remains —No jam of board because of web breaks caused by splice joints going through 630-784-0800 Benefits —Rollers secure exact defined first point of contact of liner and single-faced board - No double kiss —Frame design avoids unintended lifting of roller shoe (compared to spring or air loaded systems) - No double kiss —Pressure can be increased or released for special grades or products 490 Tower Blvd., Carol Stream, IL Contact Chicago Electric to GET IT RIGHT 630-784-0800 info@chicagoelectric.com chicagoelectric.com Solution The ProPress system ensures an optimum heat transfer to the board. It offers a wide range of set- tings. The loadi g pressure can be varied, the number of shoes can be lifted in accordance t the line speed. The outer shoes can be lifted in accordance to the paper width. The shoe bars will be delivered pre-assembled for a short installation time. —Liftable for easy paper infeed and for cleaning of the machine —Position adjustable in paper direction to avoid grooves in hotplate Press Productivity Issue—Poor Heat Transfer Rollers are usually limiting the heat transfer, since they often have contact mainly on the edges of the plates due to wear or bent plates. They also cause often loss of caliper and bearing need to be replaced frequently. Airpressure actuated systems can only supply a limited pressure and have com- pared to shoe systems a closed surface. BMO Capital Markets’ Mark Wilde: Containerboard Hike A ‘Done Deal’ According to Mark Wilde Ph.D., Paper & Packaging ana- lyst at BMO Capital Markets, the recent announcements by multiple integrateds of a $50/ton prince increase for containerboard is a “done deal,” with widespread reports of customers already ordering at the higher price. “This may be one of the least contentious price hikes in recent memory,” noted Wilde. “According to the head of an extremely well-run privately held integrated, container- board conditions are at their tightest in 25 years.” In boxboard, Sonoco, Greif and WestRock all an- nounced a $50/ton price hike for Uncoated Recycled Board (URB). Also in boxboard, WestRock announced a $50/ton Coated Unbleached Kraft Board (CUK) price hike. Fundamentals for CUK appear strong, as beverage mar- kets remain healthy, noted Wilde. Board Converting News has not yet changed the Aver- age Containerboard Prices in the chart on page 3 of this issue to reflect the increases mentioned above. As it says in the chart, “The average prices reported are tabulated from prices PAID by various sources throughout the Unit- ed States the week previous to issue.” When a majority of converter respondents surveyed report paying a high- er price and indicate what that price is, Board Converting News will adjust its pricing.

Can Employers Require Mandatory Vaccinations? BY JOEL GREENWALD

those that apply to flu vaccination and could compel a dif- ferent analysis. Is A Mandatory Flu Vaccination Policy Even Legally Per- missible? It CAN be. Absent a state or local law to the contrary, private employers are likely not prohibited from requiring employees to get a flu shot to keep the employees and the workplace safe. But as with most legal questions, there are some stipulations and limitations. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) requires an employer to maintain a workplace that is free of recognized hazards. Seemingly, this would permit an employer to require the flu vaccine to help protect the workplace. However, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) limits an employer’s ability to make medical-related inquires and/or conduct medical examinations of employ- ees — except in limited scenarios. Specifically, the medical exam or inquiry would need to be job-related and consis- tent with business necessity. This “necessity” would need to be based on a reasonable belief that an employee’s ability to perform essential job functions will be impaired by a medical condition, or the medical condition will pose a significant risk of substantial harm to workplace health or safety. The employer’s belief must be based on factu- al information, not just subjective perceptions or irrational fears of the medical condition. Essentially, there has to be a specific and reasonable basis to believe that requiring a

As winter approaches and the pandemic continues, many employers are considering mandating that their employ-

ees get vaccinated (most common- ly for the flu, and for COVID-19, if/ when the vaccine becomes avail- able). Aside from certain industries (like healthcare in some states) where a flu vaccine may be re- quired by governing agencies or laws, we are often asked whether a business can, or even should,

require employees to get a flu shot, and eventually the COVID-19 vaccine when available. We discuss here the le- gal nuances associated with such a mandate, and things to consider before deciding to implement a mandatory vaccination policy. Neither government agencies nor the courts have yet addressed whether a COVID-19 vaccination mandate at the workplace would be lawful. Therefore, the discussion here largely relates to flu vaccination issues, which may be instructive for when a COVID-19 vaccine becomes avail- able. We do note that the circumstances, law, and guid- ance relating to a COVID-19 vaccine may be different than

Shedding Light On Electrical Safety In The Workplace BY MARY DRAIN

OSHA looks to the requirements of NFPA 70E to fulfill the performance-based requirements included in its stan- dards. NFPA 70E outlines ways to comply with OSHA’s electrical safety requirements. NFPA typically publishes updates to their standards every 3-5 years. A fact sheet created by NFPA addresses some of the major changes for the 2021 edition. These include: • Article 110 : Some requirements in Article 110 have been reorganized for a more logical progression, including moving general principles of lockout/tagout from Sec- tion 120.2 and general principles of an electrically safe work condition and energized work requirements from Section 130.2. New subsection 110.5(K) requires that an employer’s electrical safety program include a policy on establishing an electrically safe work condition. • Article 130 : Sections 130.1 and 130.2 have been rewrit- ten to accommodate the relocation of information from former Sections 130.2(A) to 110.3 and to keep the focus of Article 130 on requirements related to work involving electrical hazards.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recently released the 2021 edition of their 70E Standard for Elec-

trical Safety in the Workplace. The standard includes recommenda- tions for safe work practices to protect personnel by reducing ex- posure to major electrical hazards. NFPA 70E helps companies avoid workplace injuries and fatalities due to shock, electrocution, arc flash, and arc blast. And it assists

in complying with the Occupational Safety and Health Ad- ministration’s (OSHA) 1910 Subpart S and 1926 Subpart K.

• Table 130.5(C) : Revisions have been made to Table 130.5(C), which can be used to help estimate the likelihood of oc- currence of an arc flash incident, including a new entry for the initial circuit breaker or switch operation and again after mainte- nance, as each has a higher likelihood of an arc-flash event. • Section 350.9 : Energy thresholds for electrical equipment and systems in lab- oratories have been revised to accurately reflect the data in the Informational Note’s resource document, and the capacitive circuit threshold has been deleted to pre- vent duplication and potential confusion with new Article 360. • Article 360 : This new article on the safe- ty-related requirements for capacitors has been added For those who need to keep tuned-in to electrical safety in the workplace require- ments, Industrial Safety & Hygiene News (ISHN) will be holding a free webinar on Oc- tober 29, 2020. Presenters will identify the important changes, define why the changes were made and help you create an action plan for your workplace to begin the process of implementing the changes. CCCA To Launch Video Campaign To Reach Canadian Millennials Times have changed and we are all adapting to the new normal. The Canadian Corrugated & Containerboard As- sociation (CCCA) has been busy supporting the industry as boxes have become increasingly relied upon through- out the pandemic, both with customers on the B2B side and with consumers. To help Canadians learn more about the boxes, CCCA is launching an engaging video campaign through its Ins- tagram site at cccabox.org and its Twitter feed at @ccca- box.org that will reach Canadian millennials from coast to coast over the course of the next few weeks. The program consists of a professional series of four “cheeky,” yet edu- cational videos about our world of corrugated cardboard boxes told by “The Humble Box.” The four topics covered include: Being Canadian, Be- ing Essential, Being Recycled, and Being Sanitary. In ad- dition to being released on social media, the videos will be on the organization’s website at www.cccabox.org . The videos are also available in French. The Canadian Corrugated & Containerboard Associ- ation (CCCA) embraces sustainability in all its forms and advances the competitiveness of its members across Can- ada. It maintains communication to its customers, govern- ment bodies, academia and the public at large.

FBA Celebrates One-Year Anniversary Of Tagline

are more aware of packaging than ever before, making it the right time to remind industry customers, retailers, packaging designers/specifiers, industry employees and consumers about the essential, sustainable and extraor- dinary benefits of corrugated packaging. The ability of a box to withstand the rigors of trans- port through an increasingly complex supply chain is cru- cial for protecting the product inside and supporting the brand behind it. This means it has to arrive in pristine condition and graphics on the box need to provide a mo- bile billboard for the brand. In addition, it is more import- ant than ever for consumers to understand corrugated packaging’s environmental progress and the importance of why and how to recycle the box after use. To track program effectiveness, this year FBA com- piled quarterly Impact Reports, including a dashboard capturing its progress in print/digital advertising and across our five social media platforms. “It’s important we share our progress as an industry,” said FBA President Dennis Colley. “I know that each and every member of FBA is proud of the products they make and the role those products play in our everyday life. It’s time that we elevate appreciation for the pervasive, yet humble, corrugated cardboard box and ensure that box users and consumers feel good about choosing, receiv- ing, using and recycling corrugated cardboard packag- ing. Boxes are ordinary, yet so extraordinary.” Visit www.fibrebox.org for more information.

November marks the one-year anniversary of the Fibre Box Association’s tagline, “Boxes. The Most Extraordi- nary Ordinary Thing in the World.” The tagline and cre- ative that accompanies it, is the centerpiece of (FBA)’s Corrugated Industry Promotion Program. Now in it’s fourth year, the program, which began in 2017, is a joint effort by the association, its member companies and leading indus-

try suppliers. The program is aimed at elevating the image of corrugated packaging, focusing interest on the unique attributes of corrugated and combating misperceptions about the industry and its products. It is only fitting that this anniversary coincides with National Forest Products Week. Combined, these two events are more important than ever. The rise of e-com- merce, accelerated by the pandemic, along with result- ing changes in shopping behaviors means consumers

The company’s newest machine is a C-170 fully auto- matic rotary anvil flatbed diecutter from Baysek Machines. The diecutter can cut, strip, count and stack up to 60,000 pieces per hour or 1800 sheets per hour. Urquhart was introduced to Baysek’s products at Su- perCorrExpo 2012 in Atlanta. He was looking for ways to cut NEWW’s versatile material mix and a friend took him to the Baysek booth. Urquhart was impressed with the C-170. “I was amazed by the simplicity and potential of the machine,” he says. He was interested in purchasing it, but wanted to make sure the timing was right. The global pandemic was co- incidently the right time. Baysek was able to facilitate the sale via a Zoom teleconference that featured a tour of its Nelsonville, Wisconsin, headquarters along with a C-170 demonstration. This was Baysek’s first virtual demonstra- tion and sale with several to follow. “It was a new way for us to present our machine, virtu- ally,” says Mark Helbach, Baysek President. “Ben identified a need and purpose for the machine and simply needed to NEWW purchased the Baysek diecutter to run simple and com- plicated items like pads, circles and odd shaped postal boxes.

NEWW Expands Capabilities (CONT’D FROM PAGE 22)

confirm that the Baysek C-170 was capable of meeting that need. He understood the machine and its capabilities and moved quickly to get it into his plant.” “We purchased the Baysek because we can run simple and complicated items in a clean stack,” Urquhart says. “The price and timing were right and we knew we would expand our capabilities and run jobs we otherwise could not.”

Baysek Machines headquarters in Nelsonville, Wisconsin.

The C-170 produces nick-free, multiple-out diecuts with one operator. It is ideal for partitions, bakery and pizza cir- cles, and food and pharmaceutical boxes. It can handle sheet sizes from 20-inches by 20-inches up to 55-inches by 67-inches and flute thicknesses from F- to B/C-double- wall. The diecutter is freeing up capacity on NEWW’s oth- er converting machines and improving turnaround times without interrupting the overall workflow. “We needed the Baysek to take work away from other machines,” Urquhart says. “We’re currently running more plain items like pads, circles and odd shaped postal boxes. We needed the Bay- sek to fill the niches in between.” The machine was delivered before NEWW was ready to install it because a new waste system to sort different recyclables was also being installed at the same time. He says the experience with Baysek, from sales to installation and service, was excellent. “It really was. It was low key, not high pressure, and from preparation to transit to install, it was seamless. Our experience was exemplary. We are very pleased to own a Baysek.” “Ben and his team were great to work with through all aspects of the sales and installation process,” Helbach says. “We are fortunate to have customers like NEWW.” Tim Engle, Baysek North American Regional Sales Manager, adds, “NEWW is one of the oldest and most re- spected box companies in the corrugated industry. Ben was great working with after the sale, very knowledge- able, and always looking at the future.” As for the future, Urquhart says he would definitely con- sider other products from Baysek. “I’m interested in seeing what Baysek has for digital print. We would not hesitate to invest in another Baysek.”

Fujifilm Launches Dimatix Samba At Virtual PRINTING United Experience Santa Clara, California based Fujifilm Dimatix, the world’s leading provider of inkjet printheads for commercial and industrial printing, has announced the launch of the Di- matix Samba G5L, the latest generation in the Samba print head family at the virtual PRINTING United digital experi- ence taking place from October 26, 2020 to November 12. Leveraging state-of-art silicon micro electro-mechan- ical systems manufacturing (SI-MEMS), the Dimatix Sam- ba G5L printhead has a unique parallelogram design on the nozzle plate to offer simplified printhead stitching -- enabling integration in production environments. The Di- matix Samba G5L also offers a 30-45 percent larger drop size (3.5 – 13pL), providing higher in coverage at produc- tion speeds at 1,200x1,200 or 1,200x600 dpi printing to produce color rich prints. Additionally, the Dimatix Samba G5L’s design of a sin- gle printhead width of 43mm (1.7 inches) can be config- ured to make a compact print bar of any width in order to scale to various print applications. Its extensive fluid com- patibility, and broad ink latitude from a robust non-wetting coating on the nozzle plate, offers robust functionality for inkjet printing and materials deposition. Optimized for single-pass, the Dimatix Samba G5L offers a fast priming, higher standoff capability (up to 4 mm, without air assist and up to 5 mm with air assist), and reduced maintenance cycles from multi-level ink recirculation, to limit downtime. “With features enabling faster print speed, more versa- tility and better uptime, the Dimatix Samba G5L was en- gineered to meet the evolving needs of the corrugated packaging and textile industry,” said Bailey Smith, Senior Vice President, Sales, Marketing and Business Develop- ment at Fulifilm Dimatix Inc. “We are pleased to unveil our latest technology – the new Dimatix Samba G5L printhead, which will enable faster print speeds, and better uptime, allowing our customers to remain competitive and deliver outstanding results.” An early adopter of the new printhead is BHS Corru- gated headquartered in Weiherhammer, Germany. BHS Corrugated chose the Dimatix Samba G5L for its newly developed RSR (Roll to printed Sheet in Real Time) Printer for Corrugated Box Plants. Commenting on the selection, Maximilian Mark, Prod- uct Manager, Digital Print at BHS noted, “After evaluating several printheads in the market place and in close co-op- eration with our technology integrator screen, selecting the Dimatix Samba G5L turned out to be the right decision. Our development program proved that the Dimatix Sam- ba G5L printheads enable linear speeds up to 300 m/min while maintaining sellable print quality. Its high sustainable performance as well as its longevity when given proper care are crucial properties for our application in the corru- gated industry.” Visit www.printingunited.com for more information.
