Dear Friends, Donors and Colleagues,
In response to the exponential rise of mental health crises in children, Kids In Crisis has launched plans this year to dramatically expand our services and programs to help protect the well-being of our communities’ youth. Our goal is to impact 25,000 Connecticut children by 2025, and we’re well on our way. The cornerstone of our program portfolio is our 24/7 emergency Helpline. Whether an individual or family is in the throes of crisis, or simply questioning how to avoid one, everyone is encouraged to call and talk to our trained crisis counselors. Our Helpline calls have
to overwhelmed school counseling departments. Student populations and families connect with our TeenTalk counselors and look forward to seeing them for support during the school year. Overall, 87% of those who have used our TeenTalk program this scal year, reported that they were extremely satis ed with the service, and Ohio Scales (brief measures of outcome for youth receiving mental health services) indicate over 15% improvement in problem severity and functioning scores after our assistance. We’re very proud of our dedicated team of clinicians and counselors who work so hard and so strategically, on behalf of these kids.
This scal year, our Lighthouse LQBTQ+ youth support group has seen growth and change throughout the community. We’re enjoying the thriving Stamford group meetings and are re-launching our groups in Greenwich and Westport to become well-attended support circles for our young friends. Over 85% of our Lighthouse teens have reported reduced feelings of loneliness and depression, 71% gained a sense of community, and 57% enjoyed a weekly break from a stressful home environment. Those statistics make us proud and drive our commitment to program-expansion.

This organic spread of awareness is bolstered by our marketing and communication e orts, however, it is a true a rmation that the community is talking about our services, how we have helped or can help, and sharing our contact information with others in need. No matter where a call originates from, we are ready and available to render aid or a referral to nd help in the caller’s area.
This scal year we hosted 1,006 bed nights for SafeHaven residents in our care, which was a strong re-entry into life-as- we-knew it, before pandemic health mandates. We’re opening ten more beds in our facility and hiring additional sta to meet the growing need. Our corporate partners and donors have generously helped us refresh and refurnish our shelter. We’re grateful for the assistance and proud to host children in such a warm and welcoming environment, built from the e orts of so many generous supporters. We’re enjoying the in ux of new energy, new ideas, and new approaches to achieve our mission of building healthy communities where children and families thrive through prevention, counseling, and crisis services available 24-hours, every day. 3:15 PM SafeHaven counselors depart to pick up resident children from their respective schools around Fairfield County and return to the shelter for enrichment activities, help with homework and serve a delicious dinner donated by a local family. 3:30 PM An Outreach crisis counselor meets with a youth referred by the Greenwich Youth Services Department and the Greenwich Police Department. They collaborate on behalf of the JRB (Juvenile Review Board) to assign a prosocial after school activity and community service to avoid court proceedings and punishment for the minor.
A homeless mother rings the SafeHaven doorbell to seek shelter for her three young children. The desperate mother had secured a temporary place to stay with a friend, but there is no room at the location for her children. 7:00 AM TeenTalk counselors report for a busy day of student support services at 16 middle and high schools across Fairfield County. SafeHaven clinical psychologist, nurse practitioner and day staff arrive at the shelter to begin morning assessments.
4:12 PM SafeHaven program manager goes above and beyond to secure furniture donations for a resident family moving in to their first apartment that he also helped them locate and apply for.
2:07 PM A TeenTalk counselor meets with a student who discloses social difficulty with peers. The counselor recommends social strategies, extracurricular school groups for the student to get involved in, and a planned check-in schedule moving forward. A call comes into the Helpline for a youth struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues. Crisis clinicians initiate immediate outreach. 12:05 PM SafeHaven staff teaches two pre-school age residents how to make a fun and nutritious pizza lunch and fruit salad dessert. 1:42 PM 11:10 AM A SafeTalk presentation is taking place at a local elementary school.

Treasurer’s Letter
While in some ways this year marked a “return to normal,” new challenges and opportunities emerged in unexpected ways. With a broadening base of support, Kids In Crisis was able to deliver critical support to the communities it serves. Demand for Kids In Crisis’ services grew across the board, with double-digit percentage increases year-over-year for all services, including Helpline calls, SafeHaven residents, and counseling and group participation. We were fortunate to be able to hold several key fundraising events since the onset of the COVID pandemic, which were a welcome cause for celebration. Government support, largely in the form of loan forgiveness and employee retention credits, also played an important role in bolstering available resources. These wins were o set by declines in private giving, and a market-driven reduction in our investment account. Despite the changes that this year brought, Kids In Crisis remains in a stable nancial position that will ensure we meet the needs of families and children in our growing community.
